Clamps?..Clamps?… We don't need no stink'n Clamps

All right you vintage build experts out there, a cry from the wilderness for your wisdom….

Can one take a Shimano 600 (circa 640X series) front 28.6 clamp on derailleur and swap out the clamp and put it the working bits onto a 31.8 Shimano clamp (and make it work)?

Thanks for your collective insights

Don't know about that particular case but for anyone else who is interested in this stuff, ( totally different situation ) I recently put a clamp Suntour Derailleur on my Derosa that had the Braze on lug. I put the clamp under the lug and to my surprise worked great. I imagine if you try this and can't get the Derailleur high enough on the large chairing, you can indent/shave a little V off the clamp area and raise the derailleur if necessary. ( Not hijacking thread, just a possibility to keep in mind for a cheap fix )

@Tbone5 - Typically the FD hinges are not bolts but rivets. Can you remove rivets? Sure. Can you replace with bolts? Sure. Can you install new rivets? Not likely that you will be able to find the right length, diameter, material and have the right tool.

Ok I looked up your FD on Velobase. I think you should look for the right-sized functional FD.

Thanks for the input…kinda thought it wouldn't work, but wanted to get some feedback from those that had tried.

If your heart is set on a 600 look, go for a braze on. I will send you an adapter for postage.
