For an interesting case of a native French speaker pronouncing a word that starts with the letter h, look at the youtube video of Cynthia Page singing the Georgia Satellites' song "Keep Your [H]ands to Yourself." She's great.

Some people pronounce the Ace in Dura Ace as if it were Italian. Sort of like Ah Chay. Makes me want to say, "God bless you." I've been told that is the correct pronunciation, but I don't know.
What else. Got a Ciocc frame for Christmas. Asked an Italian guy whom I met on a job how to pronounce Ciocc. He told me he didn't know because it's not an Italian word. Told him it was the Italian name of an Italian bicycle. He said, then, that he would pronounce it like the English word chalk. An English person told me that it was pronounced like church. Maybe in the Ciocc of England, I don't know.

this thread makes me realize that I most likely pronounce all the Italian and French words wrong. huret was a big surprise. I should have known though. I speak Spanish and the letter H at the beginning of words is silent most of the time.

^ A person who lived in Japan for several years told me it was more like TONGuh, or TONGeh, either one.
French (like Spanish or English) will have slightly different pronunciations several hundred miles apart within the borders of their own country. And don't get them started on the the subject of pronunciation in Quebec or Belgium. Much less Haiti.

It was to my amazement to find out that it is true that "Peugeot" is pronounced "Purr-jho" (with a softish almost inconsequential 'u", the typical french throaty "r", and a short "o") in France. A nice French lady working in a Sixt rental car agency in Bordeaux, France told me so a few weeks ago when I was there for the Holidays.
Now I feel embarrassed having pronounced it all these years as "Puh-Jo".....

I've been told it is pronounced close to "church" but more like "choach" which rhymes with poach
I'll worry about the fact that I don't pronounce French words like the French when they learn to pronounce Les Paul or Levis or canoe or banana. Or, St Louis, New York, or Paris, Texas.

I have not ever heard that. If I did I would think that either they were trying to be funny or that they were making fun of my border line Campagnolo obsession.

I've had several Jaguar cars over a span of 25 years. Seems simple enough. I heard the name pronounced several different ways. Locals here would say "Jag-war". The Brits would say "shag you are". Or "shag you whir". Or "shag wire". Then there was the vanity plate on one that said "shagn u".
Then there are the guys trying to correct me in the pronunciation of Bottecchia.

I had a French professor in college who told me there are two kinds of "h"s in French -- the ones they don't pronounce, and the ones they think they pronounce.

Anyone help with the correct way to pronounce SRAM? (Probably out of the C&V time line I realise, but I'M of the C&V era and really don't know how to say this new-fangled stuff properly!
Is it "Ess-ram", or "Ess- Ahr - Ay - Emm" or "Shramm" - or something else???

Isn't SRAM a recently incorporated U.S.-based company? You'd have thought they would have come up with something more pronouncable by English speakers.

From watching the TDF, I think I heard it pronounced phonetically, one syllable, short a. sram.

in my head (I don't own any and have never asked for any), it's S-ram, but I could see pronouncing it like scram minus the c. Given that it's all in caps, is it the initials of the founders or something?
