Weird Hub Query
Hey all, I recently purchased a Raleigh Randonneur that has come with a high flange, 48 spoke hub with a weird fitting on one side. It is hard to describe so I've attached a photo. My guess is some kind of drive for a fork-mounted, hub-driven dynamo...
There wasn't any fitting attached to the fork or any marking that would suggest there was in the past. I'm wondering if someone here has encountered this before?
Also, I'm a newb here so please redirect this post if it belongs better elsewhere!

Interesting! Is this a front wheel, or rear? 48 spokes suggests its a tandem wheel, and this in turn suggests some kind of brake attaches to the hub, but I don't recognize the hub. More photos would probably help.

I'm thinking tandem with drum brake on the rear, activated by a cable, made by Suzue.
I've been more wrong about less, but that's what I'm guessing.
Appears from the clean/dirty parts that someone removed the big parts and left it naked.

Perhaps it is something screwed onto the left end of the hub .. Arai drum brakes for 3rd drag brakes , went on the same RH thread, as freewheels,
but being on the left , the Braking force tightened them on. so maybe it is a Widget screwed on to fill the space
and make people in the future wonder what it is ..
Those 4 holes in the face of it may be there to Unscrew It from the hub.. with a Pin spanner ..
Phil wood had a disc brake, the disc was made of the friction Material, the pads were steel ,
perhaps thats the core the disc spline fitted onto ,
wheels go on frames unrelated to the original choice..
I built a 48 hole Touring wheel around what likely in retrospect may have been the shell for a Phil Disc Font wheel
as It was single threaded .. PW Co pressed a rear axle assembly in it and it worked Fine ..

I can't say for sure, but that hub looks a lot like this one.

ENO ? White Industries
As far as I can tell, the ENO is a Fixie hub that takes a sprocket like this one.

White Industries Splined Fixed Gear Cogs To Fit ENO Splined Hub - Harris Cyclery bicycle shop - West Newton, Massachusetts
I can't say that similar splines aren't also used for brakes, or something else.

Welcome all the back wheel callers! I called it a front wheel only because it was on the front of the bike when I bought it . Not how or why it got there. It has a roughly 100mm Over Lock Nut Distance. 5mm allen key axle nuts. And looks suspiciously like that White Industries hub. Maybe a 48 tooth fixed polo bike rear wheel? Or an old proprietary disc brake?
Rim is a Mavic.
There are no visible markings on the hub. A rectangular sticker on the hub that has worn off completely. The clean parts are where I've wiped it.
I've emailed the guy I bought it off for any known history.

I feel more confirmed .. Long discontinued Phil Wood disc Brake.. once you removed, the spline ring , Braking forces made it even tighter .
Might be a destructive un screwing to get that Off .. clean it up and look for details to indicate its not Machined with the spline, in place..
there is stuff like DT's threaded to 6 bolt disc adapters to perhaps add a front disc Or since it is a tandem front wheel . that is what you have a 48 spoke tandem front wheel .
NZ to California to have Phil convert it to a rear wheel with a different axle, will be A bit of shipping

Reminds me of an old Hope mountain disc brake hub. They had some odd splined disc attachment methods early on, and that hub end cap looks the part too.
Would still like to see the center section even without the sticker. Is is one piece or a three piece pressed together thing?
