Cool story: Me and riding buddy were at the Upper Lot Saturday morning when we hear this gangsta rap music approaching us. Looking down we see a GP fanboy with one of those double top tube bikes in seafoam green and leather panniers coming up in a ridiculously low gear and a boom box on the back. It was somewhat of an incongruous scene. No flames were ignited though.

When Grant Petersen dies he will be in a steel coffin. Oh wait... that's a car.... he wouldn't be caught dead there...

Though I'm into wool, steel etc. type of stuff not the biggest fan of grant's writing. I find it needlessly antagonistic and judgmental. I dropped by rivendell on a whim actually kind of expecting a snobby environment. Nicest bike shop experience ever. Great attentive friendly service.

Grant Petersen will be buried in a coffin he hand carved with a handmade axe while stealth camping on a sub 24 hour bike camping trip. He will have transported said coffin back home attached to his rear rack with a single adjustable canvas strap.

grant peterson's acolytes will then burn said coffin in a funeral pyre from ethically sourced dumpster-dived pallets. his ashes will interred in plastic water bottles, "because they're good enough. and cheap."

I did find a nugget in his Tips for Happy Riding - "Wear something out."
This is harder to do than imagined. Aside from tires, most parts on (my) bikes simply don't wear out often. Most folks I know who ride "up to date" bikes, seem to get a new bike after roughly 5 years. For me finding the right bike(s) took a while and only time shows what I like. Not going to replace anything anytime soon. On some of my bikes the urge to upgrade this to that, or that to this has come up. But then I think about it and just ride the bike - maybe someday, something will wear out.
(edit: sorry, link doesn't seem to work)

I finally have a bike he had a hand in.
I thought it would float like a magic carpet.
It did not.
I thought maybe I'd be enlightened by the experience.
I'm not.
However, it's a nice bike, well-designed, and a better bike than a lot of the bikes in its era.
Perhaps that is what he had in mind.
I like it. I think he would, too.

Grant Petersen Sr or Jr...the car dealership owners in Boise? The family patriarch Marvin started a Hupmobile dealership I think it was in 1927 or '28, now the GPs sell Toyota, Kia, Mitsubishi and a few others...
