I am 220 in the shower and I ride Cosmic Elites. Not a problem to speak of. I've ridden with a backpack and two full water bottles many times. I'd say I have ridden on them at a total weight of 250lbs from time to time.

I will never give them a dime of my money again. My Ksyrium SL Premiums developed problems early on, one of which was caused by a design flaw in the spoke nipples which resulted in the front rim needing to be replaced. Then the rear rim cracked. When I had that replaced, they told me the hub should be upgraded to one of new design because the original one showed signs of premature wear. Of course, this was all supposed to be paid for by me. Mavic customer service thumbs its nose and consumers.

I bought this 2015 TARMAC ELITE last fall and fried the rear Fulcrum rim last week.

My LBS bought me new MAVIC KSYRIUM EQUIPES, bladed spokes and all under warranty.

These are very nice but i was wondering how they will hold up and if there were better MAVICS for the price ?

Time will tell.

In case its not a troll or it reaches others, don't buy Mavic.

Look at DT Swiss or Velocity for Clyde's, imo.

Thanks for the tip, i hadn't heard of either.

I always thought MAVIC was pretty good ive had a set of 26 inch for a few years no problems.

Which wheel set would you recommend in the $400 to $600 range ?

Velocity Wheels - Hand Made in USA

DT Swiss - Overview

CXP-33 rims are about bomb proof. I've even rode them with 28 radial-laced spokes on the front without a problem.

Now I ride on 32-spoke Open Pros with Ultegra hubs. No problems.

I weigh about 215 lbs now.

I ride the same front wheel currently but with an Ultegra hub. My rear wheel has lighter spokes and alloy nipples also on an Ultegra hub. They have worked for me for over 1500 miles at 275 lbs.

If I had it to do over again, I would get the rear wheel built as above with the asymmetric build with stronger spokes and nipples just for long term peace of mind.

If you want to save a little money, this is also a good wheelset I've heard:

Velocity Deep V Black Shimano Ultegra 6800 Hubs 8 9 10 11 S 32H [74565] - $269.00 Velomine.com : Worldwide Bicycle Shop, fixed gear track bike wheelsets campagnolo super record vintage bike

Little heavier at almost a pound more than the DT, little less quality components, but plenty strong and a good price for the set. I haven't used those myself but I would if I needed some wheels and didn't want to spend more on the DT Swiss quality.

Cool, thanks, thats alot to go over, how many spokes total on front and rear wheel like 30 ?

I'm going to haveto get with my bike guy and make custom wheels that im not going to tear up.

Your wheels seem very resonably priced compared to sat 2K Zipps.

Will you have bladed spokes ?

I bent a 32-spoke Mavic Open Sport in less than 300 miles. My LBS recently switched from Mavic to Velocity as their goto wheel for bigger riders. The latest Open Pros just don't seem to be holding up as well according to them. One of the guys I ride with (who is considerably lighter than me) has destroyed a couple Mavic builds.

The LBS is now building him a set of the Velocity Dyads or Deep V's. My lighter DT Swiss have been good for 1500+ miles for me. Also, the DT Swiss that came stock on my old road bike were solid for over 1700 miles and that was with me up to 325 lbs. At my size and power, DT Swiss has been the only wheel that has held up for me.

32 spokes front and rear. I haven't tried bladed spokes so far. This build is with round spokes.

You can order that set of wheels from Excel Sports in Bolder, CO. Can just call them and read that list to them and they will ship them out to you next week sometime.

Thanks i got plenty of time to get this right.

I just smoked a rear Fulcrum Campy Spesh stock rim last week after 1600 miles.

Im hoping the Ksyriums hold up for at least a couple seasons.

They seem real nice so far but so did the Fulcrums.

Question, how do you tighten a bladed spoke without twisting it ?

Does the nipple only rotate ?

I just ran the numbers on the bladed spokes on the same DT Swiss build as above.

You save 95 grams of weight and it costs $126.72 more. For me, that's not worth the investment.

Little heavier, little less quality components, but plenty strong and a good price for the set. I haven't used those myself but I would if I needed some wheels and didn't want to spend more on the DT Swiss quality.

I bought a set of similar wheels from Velo Mine a few years ago. Were you to source all the components independently and assemble identical wheels yourself, you'd have a very difficult time getting a total cost lower than what Velo Mine charges for a complete wheelset. However, as I found, the spoke tension in the set I bought-- identical except for Ultra 6700 hubs-- was "all over the place," to quote the very competent mechanic at my LBS. The first time I rode on the wheels I was getting a rubbing noise from the rear, which was due to the varying spoke tension. A few rides later, likewise the front wheel. Long story short, I ended up spending another $120 to have the mechanic at my LBS take all the spokes (on both wheels) down to zero tension, and then retension them properly. Since then, they've been great.

I should mention that I bought these Velo Mine wheels after growing tired of paying for spoke replacements on the rear wheel of two different Mavic wheelsets: Aksium Race (came with my bike) and Ksyrium Equipe (bought aftermarket). Mavic uses proprietary spokes, and they're not free. My LBS didn't want to carry them in stock, so I ended up buying a few bags of Mavic spokes so I had them when one broke. After reading this (which stated openly what I had began to suspect, namely that Mavic wheels are not designed for clydes), I decided enough money had been wasted trying to keep these Mavic wheels of mine in service, and I got something more suitable (the Velo Mine wheelset).

Can I interest you in a bridge in Brooklyn? It's slightly used, but it still works fine. I am willing to part with it on the cheap.

Here's my experience with Velomine wheels, I've bought two wheelsets from them:

For my 36h set of Deep-Vs with 6800 hubs: I ran a tension meter over these when I got them and they were pretty evenly tensioned. 2000 miles later I had to make a small true, which I mainly noticed because I transferred them onto my new bike and stuck them on the truing stand to check them out. They were not at the point of break rubbing at all, just a small wobble. Took me about 5 mins with a spoke wrench to even out.

I bought a set of H Plus Son Archetypes off them laced to 5700 105 hubs. Same story, except they only have 300 miles on them so far. These didn't even "pling" when I first rode them, unlike the Deep-Vs.

My point is: I don't think Velomine wheels come with a hidden $120 cost of a required retrue/retension most of the time!
