Hello all,

I've been creeping around the forums for quite awhile but just decided to finally make an account, thought I'd introduce myself. I'm about 270 and 5 foot 8, working on becoming a better cyclist and hopefully dropping some weight in the process. I currently ride a 1993 Novara Randonnee I picked up recently, but spent about a year riding a 1996 Bear Valley SE Mountain bike I converted to more of a commuter. Something about 90's steel frames make me feel pretty secure as a bigger rider I suppose, and I plan on doing some touring at point so the Randonnee should fit the bill.

I try and ride to work a decent amount, which is about 7 miles away, and now that it's getting nicer in beautiful New Jersey I hope to be spending a decent amount of time outside biking for fun and fitness too. My immediate goal is to train to be able to do the 65 mile portion of the American Cancer Society ride from Philadelphia to Atlantic City in June. Might be a bit of a stretch but I wanted to set myself a goal, and I know a few others doing the race so I figured I'd have company for it at least. This forum has been enormously helpful for me already, and I hope I can be helpful to some others at some point!

Cheers

New clyde checking in

Hey everyone,

New member here, currently uber?clyde at my winter weight of 315lbs or so, down from 350. Aiming for 275 by the Fall, think its very doable.

Started commuting to work (13km one way) last summer and intend to keep it going starting this spring.

About to pick up a Trek Crossrip LTD to use as my commuter and to start some light touring. Aiming to visit a friend 76km away in late June after I get my fitness back up from the winter hibernation! Excited to get my first distance ride under my belt.

Anywho.... thanks for all the info ive already gotten from lurking around a bit... you guys rock!

Hi everyone!

I'm super new to cycling and I thought it would be good to join a community for motivation. I haven't ridden a bike since I was 10, and I am now 21 and around 320 lbs. I have a job where I'm on my feet for 8+ hours a day, but don't really get to move around much and I never make time to workout, using the excuse that my feet hurt from being on them all the time. I'm really hoping to make cycling a new hobby and to lose weight and get fit.
I'm starting off with a Diamondback Haanjenn Metro, as I don't want to spend too much money in the beginning when I'm not sure if this will be a long lasting hobby or not. For now, I'd just like to get a feel for everything and work my way up.

Looking forward to knowing everyone!

Hello guys, My name is Mike and I'm a proud new member of the Clydesdale gang. I purchased a Trek X-Cal 6 from my LBS last Thursday and starting to build on my mileage. My rider stats is that I'm 6'5" at currently 361.4lbs as of this morning. I have been working out and watching my diet since January where I started my fitness journey at 388lbs (26.6lbs lost to date). I am so glad to have found this forum of riders just like me!! Also, you guys have giving me hope that I can too one day log the miles that my co-workers are able to achieve!! My goal is to get under or at 300lbs before considering a road bike but I'm happy with my Trek mtb purchase because we have some good trails and greenways in the area. I look forward to interacting with you guys and here's to some happy riding!!

Hi - Mark here - 39 - 6'2" about 228 or so. Been hovering from 230-260 for a long time. The past 3-4 years been under 250 most of the time. Never was a big rider in the past, but started riding bike about a year ago - and really stepped it up when I finally decided to start commuting to work last Nov/Dec or so. I've also been getting 2 miles a day walking/riding dogs for exercise and taking 1 or 2 7 mile trips to grocery store per week.

Miles -Dec - 65, Jan - 95, Feb - 103, Mar - 280

No coincidence I'm at my lowest weight - the extra riding is giving me the extra I need to push through in weight loss where I've stalled before. I do play basketball a few times a week, hike occasionally - starting to try to lift weights - so many of these miles are not intensive rides - but ever bit matters.

Enjoy reading the forum here and hope to stay a while and contribute.

Hello All!

I'm looking to start riding again. I loved bike riding when I was younger and would like to get back into it. I am 360 lbs and somewhere between 5'9 - 5'10. I'd like to ride to help me loose weight along with eating right and just getting my old self back again. I'm looking for a bike and am hoping to hear suggestions on what to look for. I live in a remote town in Alaska so I don't have access to a bike shop. I've been researching and am overwhelmed by all the specifics a heavy rider should look for from the frame to the tire spokes. I'm interested in the cruiser style bike but am open to other styles. There is a really great paved and hilly bike path to my work, but there is often dirt and lots of gravel on it. Also there will be parts where I have to go off road. I don't have a huge budget, but do realize it won't be cheap. Anyway any suggestion are welcome!

I just got back into riding. I am 276 lbs and will be on my journey to weight loss. I am a full time RVer who was an avid bike rider long ago. I have had two back surgeries the first was an emergency surgery, that could have left me paralyzed, but the injury did force me to leave my chosen career. My left foot and lower leg has deminished nerve feeling making the push off less then the right.

I have read some of the posts on this thread and give you all a hand for the weight loss! I will be joining you all.

wow... i am grateful to have found this thread... Clydesdale here...

I weigh 220 and need to lose another 20+ pounds...
I lost 35 lbs last year with cycling and low carb diet... high fat, low carb...

I am curious to know if anybody else is doing low carb and bicycling?

I have so much to talk about... but it's nice to see a community of heavier people who bicycle... very cool...
I'm not much into speed... i just enjoy bicycling, listening to music, the adventure of it all.... and ... i don't like to spend lots of money and get all the fancy gear... i just like to get out and enjoy the experience....

Hello to all. I've been reading this forum every day trying to glean any information possible. I'm looking to keep dropping my weight *fat* and to keep pedaling!! I'm 65, 6' 2", and holding at around 240-245 lbs. I started out about 1-½ years ago and over 300 lbs. Started riding for pure exercise 10 months ago and purchased the Domane this past Dec. Love it!
As far as dieting, I'm eating a low carb/protein-fat diet and have almost totally eliminated processed foods. I'm not gluten intolerant but have pretty much eliminated gluten as well. I loved beer, especially German beer, and that went out 20 months ago.
I'm looking to improve my pace, my distance, and my weight. Thanks to all for the wonderful and enlightening info.
