I don't see that happening. I love my currnet weight. Getting up hills can be hard but I sprint like no other.

Well I have been reading all the post and I'm finally ready to post one myself. I'm 6'0 254lbs. A friend of mine just gave me a lemond road bike.I finally rode it the other day and was able just to do half and hour on it. I'm extremly out of shape. But I'm finally wanting to get out and do something other than hold down the couch. Well this week I'm going to try to ride and hour a day. Nice and easy rides, and see where that gets me.

Welcome to cycling! It can do wonders for you, as far as just getting out and having fun if nothing else, dmedic! Take it easy at first and build that condition, Rome isn't built in a day, and neither will your riding endurance. One thing to remember, the whole point is to have fun! If it's fun to putter around and just ride city paths, or to enter a road race or time trial, then enjoy whatever type of riding you turn out to enjoy. The whole key is just ride, how fast, or where doesn't matter, it's the journey!

Yes, take it easy. The worst thing you can do is push too hard and burn out. If it is not fun, than you won't want to continue doing it. Baby steps. And welcome to the group!

I'm 6'0" 248 (a bit overweight, but also very broad shouldered/wide hipped) probably heading toward an even 200 (although a very muscular 100kg would be my preference just to be a nice clean metric number...but that's a pipedream)
I'm enjoying an old electro-forged schwinn road bike; like others, hill-climbing is my kryptonite. I decided an older bike was better until I lost enough weight so as not to overstrain those delicate euro style road bike parts.

I rode today for about 20miles with a friend from college (much shorter and lighter) who was on a mountainbike. He regularly passed me uphill but I killed him on the downhill and straightaway.

My sister weighs about 104, and is 5'3". I always laugh when I ride with her because everytime we head down a slope, I out accelerate her without pedaling. She will be spinning away and my 285 (now 272) pounds with gravity beats her every time. If I put a little effort into it, she is toast! That being said, she would probably be down the back side of the hill before I even got a third of the way up if she didn't back waaaay off to ride with me. I know what you mean by kryptonite. I am looking forward to a nice 200-205 pounds.

I'm having all sorts of trouble adding a post here but I need some help. 6'1" 245 I keep popping spokes on my OE Alex rear wheel. My wife is only giving me a teensy allowance so I'm ebay bound. Anyone tell me anything about the Mavic reflex? Alex R500? GIPIEMME Grecal Parade? I need to get a new wheelset ASAP but don't want to make a lateral move. I'm hoping to finish this season and do whatever winter riding on my next wheelset. I'm riding about 75 miles per week and plan to do another century in September.

I am slightly larger than you and did weight 275 at one time, down to 255. I am using the Mavic Open Pro's. They have been bomb proof. $119 for the rear from Performancebike

I wanted to say hi before it was too late . I started riding again last year after a 20 year hiatus. I was 230 at 6 feet even. I just weighed myself and I am now 202. I am dangerously close to being kicked out of the coolest club on the web. I will always enjoy this thread. Also, I would also like to say to the skinny riders who pass me climbing with a smug remark; remember, I was doing those same hills at 220, think how fast I will be at 170.

I got passed on a nice steep hill today. I was cruising along in 39-27 at 8 MPH. He said "I bet it's this stuff that makes you want to weigh what I do" or something like that. I said, yeah and smiled. I hate that you think of all the come backs after they are gone. I should have said, that's why I'm doing this, or check me out next year or something. Anyway, it was fun. Here's a picture from today's beautiful ride.

Relayer, that looks like a beautiful road to ride. What area is it in?
I'll never be a real climber like the skinnies (I'll always be a track sprinter at heart), but I do luv to smoke their butts in EVERY city limit sign sprint!

As for the jerk with the stupid comment . . . he's not worth the breath of the reply.

Have fun!

I surprised myself on RAGBRAI this year. Was one of the hilliest, if not THE hilliest RAGBRAI ever. I was flying past most people on the climbs. Me.. 5-10/215lbs, bike 30lbs including stereo for inspiriation. Anyway, since I didn't do tons of training before the ride, I felt pretty good. Especially after some of my teammates found out how heavy my bike was. If I could get below 200, and then get a good bike in a couple of years after the house is paid off, I should be a lot faster.

I was on the bike trail where it goes around Lake Ming (in Bakersfield). Here is a PDF of the trail. It's actually pretty nice for the most part. The most beutiful part is where we were today with the Kern river on one side and Lake Ming on the other. I wish it was like that for 30 miles.

Found myself in St. Mary's, GA over the weekend, and was able to hook up w/ a local club for their Saturday AM ride (props to Team Camden - you guys ROCK!).

Anywho, it was my first experience riding in a big enough group on flat enough terrain so that a really tight pace line formed. I can't count the number of times I heard those falling in behind me fighting over who got to draft me

Some might have been offended, but I LOVED every bit of it. Can't wait for these Team Clydesdale jerseys to become a reality. A reference to "draft horses" on the back would have made the situation priceless.

Took my new bike out for its first ride today and for my first ride in about 10 years. I did 14 miles averaging at 12.5mph. Not where I want to be, but not too bad of a start for a 350 pound uber clydesdale.

Shopping for a new bike

Hello fellow Large riders. I've been back on the bicycling kick for about 18mo now and really enjoying it. I've got some problems with equipment though....at 6'2" and 260 lbs I'm really tough on the components. I've currently ride a Biachi Brava stock, except for a custom built rear wheel, with sora gruppo. In less than 500 mi I wore out the chain and cassett and had it replaced by my lbs for free. Now at 2000mi I'm on my third chain and cassett and now need to change the crank and bottom bracket. I'm looking for a new bike that can handle lots of power and yet still be durable and reliable for long rides. My wife and I are riding our first century, The Hotter than Hell 100, and hope to buy in the next couple of weeks. I would appreciate any feedback that you can provide. I've currently test ridden a specialized robaix and a lemond Buenos Aires. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Don't have any pics yet online anywhere to share, but will try and get that taken care of to show it off in the next couple days. I got a Lemond Sarthe, ultegra throughout and everything stock except upgraded the wheel set from what was on the bike to Mavic Cosmos, the guy at the local lbs who sold it said for my girth and the stress I would be putting on it those were a better match. I negleted to put in my post that I actually went over like Arte Johnson from the old "Laugh In" as I was coming to a stop..still learning the whole clip in clip out thing.
