6' 4" 270. started riding back in may when i told the PT i work with about some cycling events i've massaged cyclists. he suggested buying a bike & we would start training for the MS 150. so i purchased a Specialized Roubaix. love it by the way. got up to riding about 100 miles a week.
on august 12 i hit a dog on a group ride with the local club & suffered a third degree separation of my left a/c joint. needless to say i didnt make the ms150 & put back some weight. after six weeks in a brace i'm looking forward to getting back riding after getting cleared by my orthopedist. and i'm looking to get back better than i was.

I'm 6' 1/2", 200. Was 225 before a woke up and bought a new ride (2005 Giant OCR1). It's been 20 years since I was into cycling but it was, as they say, like riding a bike: You get back into it quick!!!
If any of you are reading this wondering how you can change things, believe me, it really IS easy once you take that first step. Five years ago I was 170 and awesome shape. Then my best friend died in a surfing accident and, BOOM, I lost the focus and gained a ton of weight (235!). My spirit was crushed. I just didn't know where to start. Getting on that dusty thing sitting in my garage and taking the first ride was all it took. You push the peddle, you get moving and it all just starts to melt off! Stress, pounds, sadness, everything.
I'm hoping to get back down to 170 again. But if I don't, hey, whatever. So long as I keep riding, right?

Ahh... Finally! A place where I can let my belt out a notch (or two) and feel comfortable. 6’ 3”, 250 lbs and ride somewhere around 140 km a week. My wife and I have started touring here in Europe; the last ride was from Copenhagen to Berlin. The only problem so far is on those days I can’t ride. I tend to feel lousy. I guess everything is addicting (I sure prove that with beer on the weekends). Anyway, great site!

6'1" Weight: way, way, way, way more that it needs to be. Diabetic and high blood pressure. Also have limphedema in my left leg.
My doctor told me to loose the weight and I'd be good. Wouldn't need meds. Biggest problem not enough exercise. With my size a normal bike was out of the question and I can't afford any of the recumbents. I decided to build my own quad recumbent (https://quadrecumbent.blogspot.com). The four wheels would hold my weight sufficiently and the seat would be easy on my but. After a year of planning, designing, redesigning, and redesigning I finnaly have a working bike. I'm still tweeking it but have been have fun over the last 4 weeks. Have been trying to average 5 to 6 times a week riding. I've only started out with a mile or so but there are some hills in south metro atlanta and with my weight any hill can be a struggle. Made my first two mile ride the other night. Took an hour, was tired but felt great. Today I road twice. Both were short rides but still it was great. Can already tell a difference in the clothes and my appetite has decreased. With the time change its going to be different because I normally ride in the evenings but I still want to start doing two-a-days. I want to build up slow and and get the endurance. The riding has be great for my leg. Each day I ride it looks better. For anyone wanting to get into shape and loose the weight biking is the way to go. Find a shop or a dealer online that specialized in larger riders and hit the road.

On the specifics, I think that if you take a mountain bike and put slicks on it -- you pretty much negate the speed/efficiency advantage of a hybrid.
Or a flat bar road bike will get you much of the comfort gain of a hybrid over a road bike. Then there are touring bikes/cyclocross bikes, etc.
BUT, and I have said this many times: The best bike is the one you ride.
If a hybrid will get you riding, buy a hybrid and ignore everything I have posted.

I'm 200 lb in the AM and around 205 in the PM I've been back into riding for about two months now after about 10 years off. I love to ride as often as possible which is quite often latley as I'm a home inspector and have plenty of time off this time of year. I would like to get down to around 175 if that is at all possible I am 5' 10" I also quit smoking after 4 years of it and am trying to clean out all that garbage, I have a Raliegh Super Course I bought back in 1990 which I have up graded with brake shifters and put a truvative crank and matching sealed BB. I went to try out a new modern bike which was really cool and lighter then mine but for the $$ I just did not feel there was that much difference for that kind of money. it seemed to me it looked cooler then it felt for the money which was not enough for me. I deciede if I'm still riding big time in a year then I will consider moving up. I really love my old bike and how clean it is and I like upgrading it and working on it as well. See ya down the road!

People have gotten away from posting their bikes lately and I just replaced my frame so here goes...
Flyte SRS-3 aluminum, 8-speed Dura-Ace, FSA Gossamer crank, Mavic Ksyrium wheels, Ritchey post, Turbomatic 3 saddle.
Oh yeah, I'm 5'8, 245 lbs.

OK, I've been on here awhile and somehow missed this thread. Anyway, I'm 5'10" and 245. I used to weigh about 300lbs. and my Kona Hoss and Bianchi Imola (pictured) helped me get down as low as 215. I put some weight back on over the past 6 months due to not riding (schedule related, mostly) and poor eating habits. Oh well, time to get it moving again...

Well since Im getting back into riding I guess I'll post in here. I am probably 290ish right now and 6 foot tall. I loved riding as a kid and continue to love riding a bike. I bought a Diamondback Outlook in 2002 and was 230 at the time, rode a few times a week. Over the winter I floated up to 240, then started training for an MS 170 (my mom has MS) and got down to about 220. Got a KHS 300 and rode all summer, rode 2 centuries. Then winter came, packed in it, gained a bunch of weight. Spring comes, plan a big come back start to lose weight, never lose all the weight Ive put on, fall comes college starts and gain more weight. Ive repeated this cycle every year in some form. I was working during the day and attending school at night, a 3 hour round trip commute to school mind you, so time was sparse. Now I am out of college and in a job and will have time to ride. My plan is to ride in the mornings, I get up at 5:45 anyway so why not get up at 5AM and ride the trainer with my Flite 300 in it till 6, still leaving me plenty of time to get to work. I would ride after school but I coach wrestling and will be there till 630 at night most of the time. Then on weekends ride my bike on the road, short rides Saturday due to matches, long rides Sundays. Once the season is over I'll take my bike to school with me and ride after school since the school I teach at is near some great low traffic roads for riding. My food plan is to do a meal replacement shake after my morning ride, Kashi cereal and skim milk 2 hours later during homeroom. A turkey sandwhich on oat bran bread for lunch, then a half a peanut butter sandwhich on wholewheat before I go to wrestling practice. When I get home I'll have some grilled chicken or fish with steamed veggies for dinner. Ive put a lot of thought into my food and that seems to be a plan that works for weekdays. I might also start keeping some protein powder at school and drinking it as a mid morning snack. I plan to start this on Monday and see how it goes. I taped a picture of myself with no shirt on to my bars to motivate myself. The stories I see on here have me fired up too!
Oh and I just got a left over Flite 320 from the bike shop I work at, someone had purchased the aero bars and this special seat adjuster thing it had on it so I got it below cost! I won't use it on the road until I get down at least 30 pounds.

Hi all,
I am a clyde: 6'2" 220; although, I was 270 8 months ago when I discovered I had type 2 diabetes. My doctor recommended biking and I haven't looked back. I 2 bikes: Felt F1x that I use to commute each morning (12-30 miles, depending how I feel) and a F80 that I use on the weekends. I am lucky because I live in Arizona and can commute and bike each day of the year. I joined a local club GABA and I go on Saturday rides. Hope to lose more.

Hi Davis,
Going well; in fact, I am off medication and I just monitor myself every 2 days. Weight loss and exercise helps you manage the disease. Biking and eating right are my keys to success.
