Wow. What a neat idea! I didn't know there were so many athenas out there!

I'm kinda looking at cycling the same way RoseInOregon is. Trying to make a lifestyle change. It's still tough some mornings rolling out of bed before 6:45 for my morning rides but I am always so glad that I did. I'd much rather do morning rides than do cardio in a gym!! Riding is fun, working out in the gym is a chore-- at least to me.

Name: Flips
Age: just turned 30
Marital Status: in a relationship
Height/weight: 5'5" ish-- weight--more than I'd like to say
What bike do you currently ride: Specialized Dolce- it's purple and despite the sneers I get, I love it!
How long have you been riding?: I've been riding recreationally since at least 2000 but have been riding longer and more consistently since I got my road bike in Feb of this year.

Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: I am def trying to lose weight but am viewing my cycling as more of a lifestyle thing-- starting nearly every day with at least 40 minutes of cycling. Will make an occassional appearance in the gym--only 3 times a week because I actualy hate going to the gym but from what I've heard and read, the toning I do there can help with weight loss. Also, I'm working on eating smaller portions and eating less processed food-- I've cut waaay back on treats-- will only treat on Fri-Sun.
What is your ultimate goal?: My ultimate goal is (appearance-wise) to lose all the extra padding around my thighs, waist and arms (fitness wise) to ride fast on flats and hills and actually start feeling more like a cyclist and less of a poser.
How often do you ride and for how long?: Ride at least 40 minutes M-F before work with a longer 2-3 hour ride each weekend.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: I like going fast(at least what passes for fast for me) and I like that feeling you get once you get to the top of a climb and start the descent-- mind you I could do without the pain of the last few yards of the climb!!

Athena is the female counterpart to Clysdales when referring to cyclist divisions.
We're the folks that don't really look like cyclists.

Name: Hub
]Age:[/B] just turned 43
Marital Status: Married - 18 years
Height/weight: 5'7-- weight--22 pounds less than 3 months ago.
What bike do you currently ride: Giant Sedona/Trek 5200. Old Blue, the Trek, has already had a long and full life, but my brother loaned him to me to learn about road bikes.
How long have you been riding?: I've been riding recreationally since Xmas 2003 - sporadically- really got inspired this year and am now riding more- Rode across the Big Dam Bridge in Little ROck for the Grand Opening on Oct. 1. Crossed it once on the Giant- twice on the Trek.- Well I never got off the bikes and walked!

Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Sensible diet and exercise- trying to change my life.
[.
How often do you ride and for how long?: 3-4 mornings per week- usually 30-45 minutes
What is your favorite thing about riding?: THe quiet, except the hum of the tires- the feeling of power in being self propelled.

Well ladies, I am an Athena.
Age: 49
Married 30 years
Lemond BA, and a (new to me) Trek 520 1998 that I am rebuilding
Height: 5' 3"
Weight: Usually around 180-200, currently at an all time high: 235
My weight does not bother me from 180 to about 210 pounds. It affects my life which is mostly sports after 210. I usually cycle from 1500 to 7000 miles per year. This year I have only cycled 1500 miles. I lost two friends in two separate car/bike deaths this year, so I am not that excited to cycle.

There is one journal on crazyguyonabike.com that has a woman who weighs around 250-350 pounds. She cycled with her husband from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The journal is entitled, "Charge Across America". Very inspiring for us larger ladies.

I usually do about 3-5 week long state bike tours. I have been active all my life, so usually the weight is not a factor. I recently backpacked in Yosemite for 12 miles with a pack. I'm just slower than my 26 year old daughter.

Howdy! I'm so new I don't even have an avatar...this is my first post. I guess I'm sort of a borderline Athena - have lost 10 lbs and need to lose 10 more - but boy am I loving this cycling thing. I just started in July. I got an inexpensive bike, a Diamondback Wildwood, and have spent the last two weekends obsessively shopping for an upgrade (plus this way I'll have a guest bike!). I live in LA, in Venice. The roads are pretty bad (and needless to say, so is the traffic) but I do have lovely beach bike paths that go all the way past Redondo Beach, and I'm really enjoying that. I'd like to bike to work a few days a week, though it's not the easiest ride. With all the potholes and sand and necessary curbs, I'm still looking at commuter bike options - that Trek 7300 is looking mighty good to me - any feedback?

What's worked for me with the weight loss has been the basic stuff, portion control, increasing activity and getting into a schedule. Aside from the cycling, I've always been a walker and done weight training. But since the beginning of the year, I got into a Pilates-based PT routine (for a chronic back problem) 3 X a week. I can't recommend that highly enough. Core strengthening has made a huge, huge difference in my overall mobility, energy level and sense of well-being. Plus, just about anyone at any age and fitness level can get into it and benefit.

Nice meeting you!

Would you have preferred that Clydesdale men got named after a Greek Goddess? Inquiring minds and all that........

Hmm, not quite certain of the thought process prompting this question. I'd have prefered something like "Buddas", seems to be descriptive and peaceful and wise.

Bikes: A 25 year old 12 speed, name lost to the mists of time, a ToysRUs Huffy 6 speed with a Step2 trailerbike, and (as soon as it is delivered) a Trek T900 tandem

I'll Play!

Name: Catherine

Age: 45

Marital Status: Single

Height/weight: 5'8"/260 lbs

What bike do you currently ride: Trek T900 tandem, and I have a cheap Toys-R-Us cruiser for my single bike. Well, I have my old 25 yo 12 speed out back, not rideable, but it is there.

How long have you been riding?: I rode a lot during childhood and college, but only occasionally for a long time. I've been riding my cruiser with a trailer behind for about 4 years, pulling my twins. They graduated to a trailer bike a year ago, and this summer we got the tandem.

Are you currently trying to lose weight: Yes, I'm working with a nutritionist through my doctor's office. We don't agree on all her diet strategies, but we do agree on the Mediteranian model, with a bit of South Beach thrown in. ;-)

How often do you ride and for how long?: My kids (age 5) want to ride every weekend, and DS is now lobbying for us to ride the tandem to their school and my work in the morning. Not going to happen yet! We live on a mountain side, all up and down, and I'm not in good enough shape by a long shot. We're riding about 15-30 minutes after work about 3 nights a week, and 30-45 minutes one day on the weekend. I also just got a stationary bike that I plan to ride in the mornings 2-3 days a week as the winter deepens.

What is your goal?: I'd like to get my weight down to 180, my blood pressure down from marginal, and my over-all fitness level up so I can live long enough to see my kids into middle age. If my kids wait as long as I did to have their kids, I won't have grandchildren until I'm 80! Also, I would like us all to be fit and trained enough to participate in a tandem rally in Taos, NM, over Memorial Day weekend, 2007 (also mountains, very few flat rides), and maybe a century at White Sands over Labor Day weekend, 2007. Farther down the road, I'd like to do some family tandem touring.

What is your favorite thing about riding?: The wind in my face, the fresh air in my lungs, and sharing it with my kids.

I'm not sure if I'm an Athena or not. I didn't know these distinctions existed until I stumbled across this forum today. Is it 200 lbs for both men and women??

Okay, I'm in then!!

Name: Sonja
Age: 30
Marital Status: Married to a hardcore non-cyclist!
Height/weight: 5'9" / 185 lbs
What bike do you currently ride: Just got a Trek 7.3 FX
How long have you been riding?: I just started commuting by bike 3 months ago. Before that, I used to ride to university and my part-time job as a late teenager. Before that, as a kid on my coaster.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: I've been trying to lose the same 20 lbs since I was a teenager. I think I have the exercise part of life down pat (along with bike commuting, I run, lift weights, and practice yoga), but I just like to eat TOO MUCH! I'm just trying to eat well and practice portion control without feeling like I'm dieting. It's a work in progress.
What is your ultimate goal?: I think I'd be happy to maintain my current weight, as long as I'm eating well and exercising. It would be nice to be 165 (my lowest weight).
How often do you ride and for how long?: Monday to Friday about 1.5 hours each day, plus whatever I can sneak in on the weekend.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: I find it relaxing, usually, and it feels like an accomplishment. My ultimate goal is to try cycle touring / camping.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Marital Status: Single
Height/weight: Yikes... 5'4 190
What bike do you currently ride: 2005 Cannondale R700, 1998 Raleigh M50

What is your favorite thing about riding?: The downhills!

Great idea Rebecca!

Here is my info. Been riding now for 3 summers and 2 winters. This is going to be a really long winter

Name: Linda
Age: 42
Marital Status: Married, to Cheeseflavor
Height/weight: 5'6" 162 lbs (and dropping)
What bike do you currently ride: 2006 Specialized Ruby Comp Road bike upgraded to full Dura Ace and Mavik Wheels with my favorite Koobi saddle to boot!
How long have you been riding?: Hmmmm.....3 Summers and going on my 3rd Winter, so almost 3 years
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: HECK YES! I actually had Gastric Bypass Surgery (Rouex-n-Y) on June 30th 2006. Have lost 79.5 lbs since surgery! When I started biking (almost 3 years ago) I weighed 280 lbs so I have lost 118 lbs total since starting to ride bike and surgery.
What is your ultimate goal?: Weight wise, it would be about 140 lbs, Health wise it would be to continue doing what I am doing. Since surgery and losing the weight I no longer have any symptoms of diabetes, my cholesterol is 130, my resting HR is 50 and my BP 110/68!
How often do you ride and for how long?: Daily in the summer months between 150-200 miles a week. In the winter we end up on trainers indorors and do about 80-100 miles on the trainers.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: Going fast!!!! Up hills-down hills-on the flats, doesn't matter I just want to go fast. I get a real *high* from cycling.

Rebecca, I'm sorry to hear about your cat and your illness. I hope you are feeling better soon. I know the loss of a pet is very difficult, especially one who has been a part of your family as long as this one. Several years ago, when we lost one of our dogs, a friend gave me the following:

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Rebecca... I hope you're feeling better! And I'm so sorry about your cat. That is so hard as they do become part of our families. My thoughts are with you.

In diet news... I went back to Weight Watchers tonight. Hadn't been to a meeting since July. I got caught up in summer stuff and training for my century and just started slacking in the Weight Watchers part of my life. I am up 5 lbs for the summer which I can deal with. And now it's back to the losing game!!

In cycling news... It's getting cold here so I think I'll start spin classes again. I'll still ride outside when I can but will supplement with spin classes.

Allez!

About the weight

I would not worry about saying what your weight is. Mine used to be 434 lbs. then after 19 months on a feeding tube for a major surgury I did lose weight. Time will tell on the losing of some weight, all of us will do it as we get more active. I do believe that you will do it to. Congrats on the start and keep up all of the good work that is coming this way.

Hi everyone. I'm finally feeling well enough to post again. Thanks for all the well wishes. As Magoo said, I was pretty sick for a almost a week, and my cat I've had for almost 17 years passed away. I actually had to put him to sleep, which was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. He was sick with thyroid disease and kidney failure, and was going downhill so fast. He passed peacefully in my arms, and is laid to rest beside my childhood dog in my parents yard. It's slowly getting easier, but I miss him terribly.
Welcome to everyone has joined us! I'm glad there are getting to be more of us here.
I haven't been riding in a while, due to weather around here. I'm hoping that it will be nice enough for another couple of weeks to get some good rides in before winter hits officially.
In weight loss news, as of this past Tuesday I've lost 18 pounds! I'm so excited! I've been doing Weight Watchers (flex plan) since 8/28. I'm at 306.8 right now, and the prospect of being out of the 300's soon is just wonderful! I hope to lose another 18 to 20 by the end of the year, which if I keep going like I have been going, won't be too awfully hard. I just have to make it through Thanksgiving without caving in and eating like a pig! Christmas won't be too hard on me, I have to work that day so I won't be going to any big dinners or anything. Thanksgiving though...that's my favorite holiday and I simply can't resist turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie!!! Thank goodness I have weigh in's on Tuesdays...I'll have the weekend to make up for being naughty on Thanksgiving!
I hope you all are well, and getting some good riding in! Have fun and be safe!

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Eat how you want and ride! That's one of the advantages of the cycling lifestyle!

Hi. I have read many of the post here from the Athenas to the Clydesdales and everyone is so inspirational. I know I can do this. Thought I could share.

Name: Melissa
Age: 35
Marital Status: in a relationship for 13 years
Height/weight: 5'5" /248
What bike do you currently ride: Trek 7.2 FX (upgrade to road bike as soon as I can)
How long have you been riding?: lots as a kid. Just starting to get into it. Can't wait!
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Yes. Started Weight Watchers in June and have lost 28 lbs so far. Starting the biking to move things along.
What is your ultimate goal?: My daughter is the one who initiated the weight loss. She asked for help. My goal is to make this a complete lifestyle change for the whole family and the help her succeed and feel better about herself.
How often do you ride and for how long?: Just starting out, 4 times a week.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: Feeling free. Going fast.
