Bike shorts for me!
Hello,
Thought it would be a good time to ask.
Basically I am after a pair of bike shorts with the wonderful padding. As I find myself going out on gradually longer rides I find I am getting less comfortable with my unpadded shorts.
Ok what I want (need) is a pair of what might be called mountain biking shorts with the skin tight padding insert sitting inside a pair of more baggy style shorts. I don't feel comfortable wearing just the skin tight ones and don't think I ever would (even if I had the perfect body). I have only seen this style in the mens sizes, but a lot say they are unisex so I am hoping it won't be a problem getting a pair of these (yes I am a woman in case you didn't realise). It looks like I would be about an XL or XXL from the charts but I have yet to try on a pair because I can't find this style at my LBS let alone in that sort of size.
So, what I would like to know...
How much should I expect to pay for a pair?
Where might I buy some? Keep in mind I am in Australia. Also, I don't mind buying online (in fact I would probably prefer it because I don't have to chase around as much) but I would worry about getting the sizing correct.
Would buying mens ones or ones listed as unisex be good?
Any other recommendations?

Pearl Izumi also sells a separate lightweight padded liner that can be worn with any shorts. And their sizes tend to be human (so that someone with a 40-inch waist can wear an XL). I like it because the liner is lighterweight than regular bike shorts, so I don't suffocate when I wear them under a pair of baggier shorts.

I bought some baggy shorts with the tight inner mesh + padding (I think they called them cranky pants, which is a great name) from Kathmandu in NZ, pretty sure they had ladies too. Don't know if they have Kathmandu in OZ, but shipping might be cheaper. They must have a website you could try.

Not a big fan of the new Pearl Izumi 3-D chamois but the old PRTs are like a soft diaper and are super comfy but a little bulky. I would avoid gel inserts as I have heard they are squishy and tend to migrate away from pressure areas.

Um my wife Gina wore Nike shorts. Mens as amatter of fact cause she didn't like thelow cut front on the womens shorts. We went to the LBS to find more Nikes but she found TERRY shorts for women. SHe bought a couple pair and has been REAL happywith them. Terry products are aimed towards women's comfort.
The more you ride, the more you will find that the black lycra shorts are more effective for cycling. I used to feel the same about wearing them but after creeping shorts, thigh burns on the inside,getting caught on the seat while trying to stand, I found that the non baggy cover is way better.
Just like you are finding that you need padded shorts, you'l discover the rest. So take the advice now and cut thru all the "learn the hardway" stuff!

, I refuse to ride in anything else. Jersey's I can use or not use, no big deal, but not without the lycra shorts. They are mandatory.
