Letting you know I reorganized the 'Bike' section in my sig, added a Bike Buying section and added a few more to that.

To all that replied, Thanks!

I showed him the reply, printed it and gave him the link. He is a good guy and motivated. He found this interesting and useful.

To clear up some confusion, the reason I said “He probably does not want to look into carbon fiber” was his budget of around $2000. The other is my lack of knowledge. I did not think carbon fiber would be a good choice of material. I was thinking steel.

The thing is you guys recommended is the similar to what they recommend for his off road bike. They gave him stiffer shocks and a heavy-duty rear rim. I guess the same logic for rims applies.

Thanks again guys. Any bike recommendations in the 2K and under would be appreciated. He is a newlywed and can’t drop a ton on a Road bike. BTW: the Kuota Kharma was a beautiful bike, just out of his price range.

If he has $2000 he may want to get a Rivendell Atlantis or their new 650B lugged steel MTB.

Cool!
BTW there are lots of great carbon (and other) bikes for under 2G's.
especially consider closeout deals (left over new 06 models can be ordered new)...you can find $3k MSRP bikes like that for under $2K. (Many folks, including myself, have happily gone this route)

I'd recommend highly that he goes and rides a bunch, and find what suits him best. I was dead set on buying (another) a new bike today, but decided against it when I found that what was fun several months ago wasn't fun now. And what I thought I would like I didn't, and ended up strangely liking Trek's cyclocross bike.

Anyway, have him go ride some. Steel is the way to go for comfort by far, but it's all about preference.
