I am 6'0" and currently 269 (down from 281). I have only been riding again for a little over a month after a 12 year hiatus. Started with a cheap Wal-Mart Mongoose MTB but upgraded to the KHS TC-150 after only 2 weeks. Really too early to tell, but the KHS has not given me any problems and the wheels are still true. My riding is all pavement though, so I doubt I will have any problems unless I hit a pothole I didn't see coming.

6'5" 325 on a 2009 Surly LHT. Narry an issue yet with maybe ~400 miles over some not-so-great Boston roads and paths. Heading in soon for my first wheel check.

6'7" 270 ride a 09 fuji newest 3.0 and a 08 giant cypress.

the fuji i popped a spoke at around 50 miles and performance replaced the rimes with their forte titans lower spoke count but they have stood up to over 300 miles of clyde goodness

the cypress i changed to a ridged fork and replaced the rear wheel with a 32 spoke velocity aero.

Both bikes are working great

Get strong wheels

I ride a 1998 Specialized Rockhopper. The bike has held up just fine but when I started a commuting daily, I started breaking a lot of spokes (my weight has fluctuated between 260-290). The bike originally came with 32 spoke wheels so I upgraded to a 40 spoke wheel in the rear and 36 spoke wheel in front. I figured that I was nearly a tandem load by myself so my wheels ought to be tandem strong. I used Sun Rhyno Lite rims with the 2.0mm spokes. This combination of rim and spokes has been bulletproof; I haven't broken a spoke in several years.

Only because I found the best deal on Craigs List. Cannondale Carbon SL1 w/ mavic ksyrium wheel set. Im 6'5" @ 275LBS. Ive had to bunny hop over a pot hole, I hit a rock (medium size strawberry) and got a flat rear tire, and this bike is solid. It's also the first bike I ever road that cost more than $150 so I really have nothing to compare it to.

What wheel did you upgrade too. I am having similar issues?

What I Ride

I currently ride a Trek 7100 which I bought new. I am 6 foot 285 and have been having a lot of problems with spokes breaking. I am on the 3rd wheel now- a 36 hole, and it just lost a spoke today (I have 10 rides on the new wheel). Not sure what the type is. The LBS that put it together for me is closed Tues & Wed and I'll have to call and ask.

6' 1" 450. I've been riding a Specialized Carmel 3 26 for just over a month now. Just had the bike tuned up and it's running even better. Been riding for just over a month and feeling great. Started off doing less than two miles at a shot and now I'm doing around four per ride. Have a few hills in my area and it's tough fighting physics.

5'11', 400. I just picked up my new Trek Navigator 3.0 today. Rode about a mile, so far, so good. I was having some trouble with the seat post not wanting to stay up but it worked fine after I tightened it.

Alex (rim manufacturer) reportedly has had quality control problems over the past year.

Hey,

I'm 6'3" and just south of 300lbs. I ride a 2008 Raleigh Prestige roadie, it's full carbon, I have two wheelsets 1- mavic aksium (came with the bike) 1- mavic ksyrium (got from a friend) they hold up well enough, but I had weak tires that were getting flats. I was in a car accident about a year ago on that bike and haven't really ridden it since (I'm fixing it up this week though. I have more time now)

In the mean time I had been riding a 2008 Specialized Langster fixed gear bike, I've upgraded a lot of components on it, including the wheelset which is now Velocity Deep-Vs, and they are bomb-proof. I have had ZERO problems with those wheels.

1977 Panasonic converted to SS. The wheels seem to be also bomb-proof. Only real upgrades are drops and sealed bottom bracket. Glad to hear the Deep-Vs are also "bomb-proof". Do you hit many pot-holes, train tracks, and such? I'll likely get the DP-18s instead of Velocitys, but I'd love to hear more tales of the strength of deep section rims. I jump off curbs on the ancient Arrayo 27s once in awhile with no problems (at 280ish lbs) and hit plenty of holes in the road that I'm not always aware of fast enough to go lightly over. I feel like I'm cheating when I ride with my fixed bros, but haven't the money to go fixed quite yet.

Presently 5-10, 305 give r take, riding a new Trek 7200 hybrid. So far so good....just did a 13 mile MUP ride in about 50 minutes or so, felt good. FD is off a bit but not a real issue since I rarely use the 28T ring. Rode the MUP mostly in the 38x14 or 38x16 if that's what the 2 middle cogs are. I try to ride the biggest gear that'll let me spin 80-90rpm's or so.

I'm just barely out of this category (268; down from 535), but I'll always be a part of it.

I bought a Trek 2.1 Pilot late last summer. They don't make the Pilot series any more, but I guess they (Trek) have incorporated the Pilot geometry on their latest 1.X & 2.X series bikes.

Gearing up for my first century this summer.

Ride on!

I'm 5' 11" and around 450. I'm riding a mid 90's Bianchi Nyala. Replaced the rear derailleur, one spoke and recently installed a taller stem. Otherwise the bike has held up great over the years.

I ride about twice a week mostly trails. I ride for fun and fitness/weightloss. I've been riding off and on over the years at various weights and can't wait to get down to a comfortable weight.

I'm 53 years old 5'9" and 265. I purchase a Trek Pure Sport for my 10 to 15 miles of slower paced weekly recreational riding. The crank forward design allows you to put both feet on the ground while still seated at stops. This allows me much more comfort and security while I'm riding around the neighborhood in traffic.

Amazing! Losing 200+ pounds puts you in a very select group. I only know of Bdinger and Tom Stormcrowe who can brag about as much.
