Looks like my Tour de Cure (March 1st, Venice, Fl) will me a wet and windy ride. I was so hoping for great Florida spring weather. Low 60's, rain and 10-15 mph winds should make for a great first century...

40 miles wiht maybe 3 stoplights about 5 miles from the end. Closk stops at teh end of the 100 miles. ON another ride called Breahtless Agon, it stops at the peak but approaches from theopposite direction. But lcocked is stopped at the 72 mile mark when the climbing is done.

Nice downhill but there is one or two climbs left halfway to the bottom, maybe 1/2 mile in length. They can be pretty tough cause the legs freeze up if you don't keep them spinning onthe dowhill.

This thread is getting way, way, way to serious, so lets bring it back into line.....

My rules for drafting are simple:

Go slow enough that nobody wants to draft off me. This is safe when my wife is following, as she is not very fast either .....

- OR -

2) Go fast, but have some beans first, to provide some jet enhanced power, you don't want to be behind me, when I kick in the afterburner

so you do a ride that is timed and has results posted in order of finish time -- sounds a lot like you do race!!!! Liarfish.

Well I do timed events, not actually considered a race although 90% of the riders one encounters are trying to beat your time.....

I do race but personal races with some friends. One guy is Rick@OCRR, He's a double century rider. I've beat him on GMR a few times and a few times he's beat me. But on the timed events he always seems to edge meout. He gets me by half an hour or so. But I stop and he limits his stops. He's said our ride times are within a couple minutes of eachother except that I stop to talk to Gina once in a while. She drives the course!....But I outweigh him by 60 lbs so it's always fun. He's a good guy (rabbit) and always seems to push me on training rides!

Double century? How is the climbing on the ride? Is it all in one place, lots of steep then some flat? 13000 doesn't seem like too much over 200 miles. BA is 12,000 in 72 miles so the 13 is doable. But it depends on how the climbing sections are situated.

Site says only experienced double riders are allowed. I've never done a double, 126 max on a double metric (CoolBreeze).

I rode the Tour de Cure in Venice, Florida today. I sure learned how important drafting is today. Man the weather was a killer...I was able to do the century, but it was very hard for sure....10-15 mph winds with winds gusts at 23 mph, 60 degrees and some rain...Not the weather I want to attempt my first century in, but I did it anyway...If I had not found a couple to draft with I would have never made. We took turns and in a few places the headwind was so strong we were lucky to be going 10 mph. We finished with a time of 7 hours 30 minutes with a 6 hours and 9 minute actual ride time. 50 riders signed up for the century but only 18 actually rode and finished the century. My group was #16, 17 and 18...We finished dead last but we braved the weather and didn't give up...Not really the way I invisioned my first century.

Congratulations, if possible take shorter breaks. If I take a break longer than say 5 minutes lactic acid starts building up and my muscles get sore and I have to warm up again. Man 60 degrees with 15mph wind, I know I would be freezing in that weather. How did you feel after the ride, and today?

I find this funny 'cause our club just completed organizing/running their first century. Weather sounds somewhat similar. Riders rode east up a slow ascent for the first 25 miles, gaining, say 1,000 feet. But it was through canyons with what turned out to be a killer headwind the whole way. Mix of clouds & sun, temps at the start in the 50s rising to mid-hi 60s through this climb. I had to SAG a couple riders who cramped up after using their leg muscles so exclusively on such a long slog. 'Course when they turned and came back down...whoo-eee, there's a 10-mile descent back down into town here with that wind having become a tailwind. Lotta fun!

Jess,

Most of the breaks were short except the one at 60 miles...it was about 10 minutes long and my legs felt the long break. I felt good after the ride except my back and neck hurt. I guess that because I am 6'4" and was riding in a more down position than I am use to. Overall we stoped at 4 of the 6 rest stops and most were quick stops. Last night the news said winds were more like 15-20 mph with 25 mph gusts. I know I almost got blown riding over some of the bridges and alone the beach.

I can only imagine how windy it was, yesterday afternoon we really started getting hammered with a cold wind. I'm south of you so you probably started getting this at the start of your ride.

Again congratulations and it is a great accomplishment. I already signed up for my next century March 29th down here in Miami. Gonna tyy and break the 5 hour mark.

Come up to Seattle for the STP double (nice and flat, under 4000' total) and see how you fare on a double before jumping in one with 13k of climbing. There's a big difference from double metric to double imperial. Take how you feel at the end of a double metric that took 7.5 hours; then think about how you'd feel if you spent another 4h 30m on the bike at exactly the same power output. Maybe yours wouldn't, but I know that my body starts to react to things differently after 10 - 12 hours in the saddle. Food doesn't seem as appealing any more, it's tougher to keep to a proper schedule of calorie intake, I have to think a lot about making sure to stay hydrated, etc.
I'm not saying it's impossible (I went from 200k to 200mi as my distance jump last summer), but having done the distance, I wouldn't suggest combining it with the climbing the first time out. 13k over 200 miles may not sound too bad, but there is a hill at the 197 mile mark on the STP route; it's only about 1/3mi long, but it's about an 8 or 9% grade and it made everyone riding near me groan and wince when we saw the Dan Henry pointing up the thing.

Drafting & Me

Well I don' t have any rules for drafting, all are welcome. My nickname in the paceline is "The Bus" as I tend to put a pretty big hole in the air. When it comes time to "ride the bus" all I hear behind me are complements and gratidude. My only complaint is that my fellow riders are all non-clydes so when they take a pull at the front, well its not quite the same effect.

Anyone with similar experience?

When I was riding my quasi-low racer this weekend in really huge gusts of wind I was getting absolutely no draft off of the road bikes. There were a bunch of road bikes who lines up behind me as I was cutting a path in the wind. They said it helped alot but I should have brought my road bike so I could have taken out the wind completely

I sometimes ride with a fellow Clydesdale and his wife, and the last time we were all out she made a comment something like "it's like riding behind a truck" when she was following behind both of us. I don't think either one of us would get much aerodynamic benefit from following her.
