Fractured Pelvis

I fell off my bike about 2 weeks ago and fractured the old pelvis. Luckily I don't have to have surgery, but I do get to use crutches and not put any weight on my left leg for 6 weeks. I guess things could have been a lot worse. Anyone have personal experience with a fractured pelvis? Any trouble getting back on the back after recovery?

Didn't have a fractured pelvis. Had both of my hips replaced last summer, riding bike is accually the best thing you can do for therapy in my situation, do to low impact on hips, could be the same with you, was really glad to hear that after years of not being able to ride. It's pretty slow going at first, hard to get on the bike, bending over, legs hurt, gets better all the time. I can't wait for weather to get better around here so I can get out on my new bike!!

I hope to get back on the bike as soon as the doc says it's okay. This unfortunately puts a cramp in my bike commuting.

Ouch! I'm glad you're ok. Good luck with the rehab. Fractured my spine in 2006 and besides swimming, cycling was the one form of exercise I figured I'd be able to handle. Now I commute every day and I love it! No singletrack or vertical drops for this kid, though. Roads and paved trails only.

A friend has this happen a few months ago. He's cycling fine now. He couldn't walk for a week and was off the bike completely for about 6 weeks followed by steady improvement.

As I've been reading on the internet, other folks have who have experienced similar fractures have recovered well without surgery. I'm feeling a lot better and it's only been two weeks. The doc said I need to stay off the affected side for 6 weeks, so hopefully the decreased pain is a good sign that it is healing well.

As I've been pondering the fall and the fracture, I think the reason I had such a bad fracture was because I was clipped into my pedals. I fell directly onto my left hip without any trauma to my left knee or ankle. I'm considering forgoing clipless pedals while riding on pavement.
