I plan on riding at least up to the first snowfall, which according to the farmer's almanac will be mid January. Riding in the cold is always a challenge I can overcome with warmer clothing. Some cheap compression shirts, a sweatshirt or two under my ski jacket, long pants, two pairs of gloves and a ski mask to cover my face and I'm good for 25 miles down to -15 degrees. Riding in the cold just adds further incentive to keep moving, if you stop for any period of time you'll get cold - basic science lesson.

Today's Science Lesson Brought To You By.... MikeRides !

I used to struggle with the trainer until I decided to watch tv, movie, etc. I can only handle so much of that though but I know I NEED to do it so I do the best I can.

I will ride in the cold until there is a danger of ice or slick snow. Gravity still likes to show who is boss and I respect his authority.

Steady state or similar schemes bore me to death on a trainer.
However, something about intervals that keep me interested, something about keeping count, keeping the timing and breathing.

Tried TV, tried tunes, to no avail. Have not tried the suffer videos or such.

The intervals, etc. is what I'd do. I'm going to do the trainer versus walking on a treadmill and such. My wife and I do have a nice elliptical so I'll do that sometimes.

Steady state exercise is something I'm moving away from. I do my longer rides on the bike because I want to and I know they burn some calories but I stick with my intervals, sprints, and increased pace to achieve my actual health and wellness goals.

Studies showed that long duration (> 4 hours) sub (some low level of effort) burned a lot of visceral fat...
Also supported interval like training as highly effective at reducing visceral fat.

Same group of studies showed the usual and customary steady state (you know the 30 minutes on machine you see at gym) did little. Burned calories, yes... Then other studies showed that compensatory eating response to steady state was higher than calories burned.

The compensatory eating is something I had to get under control. What I ended up doing is make sure that my on the bike and immediate post-bike nutrition was appropriate and then my actual hunger was taken care of by bulkier items like a salad, etc. The benefit I noticed was immediate when I did it the first time.

Basically for longer rides I try not to over-prepare in the first place... I think that is part of it. Fear of the distance would make me eat the day before and morning of way more than needed. I was ok with that at first because completing the ride was more important. Now that my distances don't scare me I just watch that I'm eating the right type of food the day before and the morning before. During the ride I make sure I use my hydration products (awesome) to keep my electrolytes and such replenished. I keep some extra to mix in as needed when I refill my water. For food I have a variety of things with me but I don't do the standard mixes with M&M's, etc. I'll eat that because I'm a pig and overdo it.

I've only done one 100 miler but what I'm doing now for 75 miles and below is working great. I'm not over-compensating and I realize the benefits over the next few days. I know I can improve at that even more but I know I'm on a good path.

Just kind of thumbing through, here. Firstly, good job and great progress, Wondermonkey ! Secondly, clearly gravity's days are numbered and you can safely say that to it I think. Thirdly, I like what you just said about fear and over preparing for a ride food wise.

Keep on truckin'!

I have read of a LOT of people watching the ladies exit "Curves" and enter a pizza place, the two seem to go hand in hand :-).

I rigidly control my intake (the total calories anyway) so there is no compensatory eating :-)....

Steady state is what I do in between interval days, the day after is active recovery, then the other days I suppose are building my base and ability to stay in the saddle to be able to do longer rides.

This is a good way as far as I am concerned. Keeps things fresh as well.

I only commute here and there. I rode home last night due to a rare free evening and then back in this morning. It was a bit chilly and I used a pair of work gloves over my riding gloves to keep my hands warm. It was just enough. Using my cold weather gloves would have been too much. I did not wear wool socks or use my shoe covers so by the time I got to work (2 hr ride) my toes were VERY cold.

It was chilly enough that when I warmed up I got that itchy skin feeling and red skin you get when you exercise in the cold and then hit the showers.

I like commuting here and there but I'm not hardcore about it. When it gets just a bit chillier in the morning you won't find me on the paths.

As I was riding back into work this morning I started to get tired of being on the bike. Not physically tired but just "meh... I'm getting bored with it." This does not happen when I ride at work several times a week or a long weekend ride but with this little Strava contest I am going to be putting in very consistent rides. My fear is I just get tired and stop.

So.... I am going to push forward with trying to get in the miles but I may back it off and not try to do 20-30 miles a day. I don't want to ruin the larger goal of being on my bike several times a week by getting tired of it and not being on there for a month.

Listening to your body is important...
How's other recovery factors?
Sleep? Nutrition? Fun/family/downtime?

Sleep comes and goes. When getting up early to commute in then I'm out a bit of sleep but I recover on that the next few days. For example last night I went to bed at 10 pm and woke up at 7 am. Felt very refreshed.

Nutrition is tops. What I use to stay on track, recover, etc. is top notch. Body feels great.

Fun/Family/Downtime - I don't generally do "fun" activities as coaching, biking, etc. are very enjoyable. I don't play guitar anymore but that is the one thing I wish I could do more of. However there are only so many hours in the day/week and I'm ok with that small exclusion. Also I'm building a Plan B income so that takes about 10 hours a week. Downtime is the coaching, etc.

I'm going to ride today as I feel refreshed and want to keep things going. Tomorrow I MAY be able to ride then I'll be off the bike for a few days as I'm heading out of state. That in itself will refresh me and I'll get the urge to be on the bike, I'm sure.

Either way I still crave activity. Hiking, etc. I just tend to get tired of too much of the same thing.

That's happened to me in the past, whether I like to admit it or not. Usually a day off the bike has me itching to go for a ride.

I've been missing my bike these past 3 days, I've had a series of slow leaks that I'm afraid to even get on and go for a ride as I really don't want to be stuck 20 miles away from home fixing a flat only for it to go flat again. Planning on going up to the LBS after work today to get a new tire and a couple new tubes, which hopefully will fix the problem for another 2500 miles.

Of course finding time to ride, was challenging this month. Back to school, preparing for the opening of a second restaurant, and social engagements to keep up with. I used to hike every weekend, but haven't hit up a trail in 2 years-bicycling took over that activity for me. I really should start hiking again, especially this time of the year as the scenery should be breathtaking and after all the miles and weight loss over the past couple years, I shouldn't have a problem making it further than my recent furthest 12 mile hike.

I am leaving for hunting in about an hour. Will be gone until Sunday evening. When I get back I am going to be behind on my Strava challenge but I'm hoping some consistent mid-length rides will put me withing striking distance. Maybe a long ride or two can get me there. We shall see.

Achieve or not on the challenge and I've still won.

You said before you were using a recovery aid?

I have modified my challenge spreadsheet to show what I need to average to get to my goal. All averages are before that line's ride, if any.

For example you can see below (if my math is right) that as of today I'll need 29.02 miles per day to hit my goal. I went hunting and lost a bunch of days on the bike.

Failure.... and success... both at the same time. Due to all day meetings (unanticipated) and end of year school volleyball tournaments I have not been on my bike... outdoors. I could have rode in the mornings if I knew I could not get out at lunch but there wasn't any warnings about my work schedule. What all this did was have me get my indoor trainer half-a$$ed setup before I wanted to and I put in some time on it.

So.... I'm PROBABLY not going to reach the goal of the challenge miles but I am still on target to hit my ACTUAL goal of being on the bike consistently.

Tonight after a volleyball pool play game I am going to further setup my trainer area. My focus for the area is to reduce the boredom that comes with biking in one spot. When I get it going I'll take a few pictures.

Is it possible for you to ride after work/school activities for an hour or so in the evenings? Strap some lights to your bike, wear a reflective vest and get a mirror so you can see traffic coming up behind you.

Sorry I just can't imagine riding indoors this time of the year unless it's raining out. And yeah, I know saying that last part makes me seem like a wimp but I find myself even slower once I get wet for some reason (likely a higher safety concern).

Yes it certainly is possible and I've done that here and there. The only excuse (excuses are just reasons that are weak) I have is that generally when I have an after school activity I still have work I need to accomplish on moving forward on my Plan B income. I have to balance moving forward with that with riding, etc.

Either way I am still going to be riding outside but probably not enough to reach the Strava challenge goal. The goal in itself was just motivation. I'd like to hit the number but not doing so yet being consistent in getting some tough exercise is still good.
