I typically go out (because I can right now) between 4:30 and 6:30 a., and I do okay. I ran an errand around 8p. when it went up over 102 the other day, and the air smelled and felt really gross. It was only a 2-mile ride to return DVDs, and I'm glad there were no major hills to climb. I won't ride in the hot sun when it's like this.

Ya know, folk's, that it's beyond stupid to heat (or cold) stress your body unless you have to ride in such bad weather.

There are no bragging rights for risking you life or health by heat/cold stressing your body to the breaking point.

I have zero heat tolerance, so anything above the mid '80s is too much for me. I know from experience that if I push it, I'll get disoriented and dizzy -- not fun.

It's funny, riders in colder areas laugh at us California people for wearing windbreakers in 50 degree temps. But when the heat hits, it's no problem. The one time I felt the heat was 115 doing hill repeats. I don't pay attention to the forecast unless we're expecting rain. So this on time, I was caught by surprise. If it didn't involve hills, I would have been fine but it was the combo that made it difficult.

Heck, we climb 5,000 feet on training rides when it's 100 degrees. The climbing ride I like to do is in June so training in January weather is no good.

Heck, it was 90+ this weekend, we climbed 3,000 ft up the mountain and I was wearing an underlayer no problem!.

I have to say I wish I could tolerate heat... did a MTB ride this weekend (starting at 7:30a) that left me dehydrated and headachy all day. It's interested to me how some people do OK with heat and some not. I have never liked riding in temps over 80 degrees and in fact, prefer around 50 - 60. I am a CA rider that would not put on a windbreaker when its cool (arm warmers maybe). Summer is a tough time for me... pretty much on the road and ride along the beach where it is still cool. Boy I can't wait until Fall!

And Beanz... 100 degrees in dry CA is way different than 100 in Ohio where the humidility is much higher.

I lived in Orange County for 20 years, much of it cycling. Then I moved to the real south. Humidity matters.

Thanks for the invite - maybe in the Fall. The ride Sunday and the little ride I did last night left me sick and weak - I hate HEAT; really hate it. Over 75 is too hot for me and right now, the thing we do have in CA that's miserable is the SMOG. My eyes and lungs have been burning for weeks!

OK sounds like whining... basically summer time for me is riding through June and maybe early July and then late July, August, early Sept. I take off and do stuff close to the beach where it's cooler and air is cleaner. I cut my MTB rides back to short little after work rides in Irvine Park.

My goal for retirement is to find someplace cool and dry... not certain where that is but I'm looking!

NC is lovely but is honestly not the real south - I have family in MS, AL and GA. Now that's the South and brutally humid!!!! NC is kindof South and humdiity light!

I never said it didn't. I guess I have to enter every detail in my posts. I was actually talking about a poster from northern California that posted comments about our windbreakers in 50-60 degree temps when I said colder areas. I'm sure the "laugh at us California" people threw you off (my bad but didn't think I had to explain everything), but it was because someone in Washington in another forum that also made comments.

FTR, when we are climbing, we are inland, not in OC. It's "much" cooler in the OC.

...........and 96 the day I was wearing the underlayer on the GMR climb.

my stated limit is 100, but my reality limit is somewhere between 90 and 95. Humidity being a significant influence.

My problem is all about staying hydrated. I cant seem to drink often/fast enough when it gets really hot to keep up with the huge amounts of flop-sweat i get.

I'm not very good in the heat and once got heat stroke on a charity ride on a 103 degree day. However, it's never been so hot here in NJ that I couldn't do a relaxed 10-12 miles on a well-shaded bike path. That's not really a meaningful workout for me but it beats staying indoors and missing a precious ride day.

For me, one missed day leads to another and to another, and the next thing I know I've lost a ton of fitness, gained weight, and my ride calendar is toast. So I'll not let the heat prevent me from getting out there, even if I end up coming back in after 20 minutes.

low 50s is too cold (although if it's sunny and I can manage until the upper 40s) to go riding for me...I haven't found a temp that's too hot yet. I've been out riding for hours in 100+ (102 and 104) degree days. I drink lots but don't really mind it.

last week we broke a record for 'striaght days over 100' that existed since 1934! of course, now we have 6 more days on top of that...with at least the next 7 day forecast showing way over 100 each day (think we are on 27 days now, I'm not sure)

I ride for me. I ride because it's too hot to do much else, at least there's a breeze!
I do it all wrong, I'm sure...but me and my big clyde self have been out on a single speed mtb bike every day for a few weeks now...and I'm feeling better...dropping some weight already...and generally happy I didn't 'give in to the weather.

I do have to leave my clothes hanging in the garage to dry though...lol.
