Ride Recap: Apples.... here we come!
Friday evening was pretty typical…. Around 7 PM a friend from PA and I touch base….and it usually is around biking:
Him: “Hey bro. How goes it?”
Me: “Doing good. How are you?”
Him: “Good”
(pause)
Him: “What you doing this weekend?”
Me: “Riding in Dover on Saturday and Wilmington on Sunday. What you doin?”
Him: “Don’t know yet”
Me: “Want to come?”
(long pause)
Him: “Not sure. Need to clean off my table”
Fly fisherman in the Northwest have a saying….. people that want to go but make excuses not too go (usually due to laziness) either are “bird watching” or “shampooing their hair”. Thank goodness I am bald and I know nothing about birds!
Was a pretty day today with blue skies, no clouds, and wind. Some people would freak out about the wind but I am coming to terms with it. Riding in the wind calls for slowing the pace down, dropping into easier gears and not pushing it. You can get very tired fighting the wind so you need to have a game plan…. And today, Jim and I had that game plan.
(on a side note….. if you didn’t ride in the wind, rain, or heat… when the heck WOULD you ride?)
We met at the high school and drove to Dover where we did the Amish ride in September, which by the way was the best ride I have done and next year it will be a century ride for me I hope. You couldn’t ask for a better day. Jim led the way and we pasted some big luxurious houses, saw the governor’s mansion and many more neat things. We stopped at an antique shop which was really neat and unique.
And we stopped at the apple orchard. THAT was cool. We looked around and indulged ourselves in a pumpkin donut which was just delicious. We didn’t get anything else at that point since the winds were strong. Plan was to ride more and then head back to the orchard. There were a lot of people in the early morning at the orchard so I couldn’t imagine coming back later with more people but it beat carrying more weight into the wind.
The rest of the ride was wonderful. We basically followed the Amish markings and then headed back to the apple orchard. This time there were so many people. Three parking lots full plus lines waiting to get in….but for us, we got the best parking of all. About 15 steps away from the entrance of the apple store. Cant beat that. (I love biking)
The cross winds were strong and almost blew the front tire from under me but the leaves on the ground, the leaves turning color on the trees, good company and friendship, and a delightful ride was all worth it.
No bird watching or shampooing hair for us today!
