At the moment there's no indication there's any cause for the clots other than the surgery. I never had PE symptoms when I was 400 pounds, and aside from some severe chest colds the past couple of winters I've not had the shortness of breath I had with the PE. Now, what my doctor and I might decide in the future is still a question.....

I've heard of the odd dietary restrictions on Coumadin. I've not been advised to avoid anything aside from cranberries, which hurts because I love cranberry juice.

I agree with my doctor's comment on the care at the last hospital, but that's not just for the reason's I've stated. Nursing there left something to be desired. They forced me to be bedbound because of the clots but then did a horrible job attending to my hygiene when I needed to relieve myself. (Yes, it's a nasty job, but if you can't handle it, why go into nursing?) And the fluctuation in the Coumadin level could very well be from skipping a day - I didn't get the pill the night I was admitted.

One possible reason Machka's, and my, levels bounced around as they did could be from hydration. I was very dehydrated the last few days, and basically stopped eating and drinking. I wonder if Machka's problem was the same.

As for the sense of humor, if I didn't laugh I'd cry. I don't like crying.
Coumadin is affected by foods high in Vitamin K, like liver, spinach and kelp. You can eat all of them, but you need to be consistent in the amounts and frequency, so they can manage your dosage to keep the INR in therapeutic range.

Hmm. I suppose I could pre-mix shampoo and water and use it the same way?

Machka's INRs bounced all over the place as well. It was one of the reasons why she remained in hospital for a full fortnight before they stabilised enough for her to go home. There were similar issues with Coumadin dosages as well, as her INR continued to rise and fall. You may well go through similar experiences despite what your doctor says.

Also, has he checked for any genetic predisposition to forming blood clots. Eventually, this was tracked down with Machka. And oddly, there are some high-iron vegetables she has to avoid, such as spinach and silver beet, because they can trigger the predisposition.
After my second set of Multiple PEs, I demanded testing - some 18 vials of blood later, they too determined that I had flunked 3 different 'genetic' blood tests - which resulted in blood thinners for life. This at age 48 - no issues prior, 14yrs driving truck, and 8 prior surgeries - have no idea what 'magically' changed in me either...

Obesity and sedentary lifestyles are risk factors, as is knee surgery. I don't dispute your opinion or your doctors', but you did fit the risk group aside from genetics.

I wasn't pondering them, they were decided, I just hadn't changed them yet. AND, I would never mock someone for riding any type of bike. I'm fairly sure Peter_C knows it was friendly ribbing. Keep in mind Neil, I am still recovering too. Doc says it could be six months to a year before I feel 90% better.

Blood test came back, delayed by a computer outage at Quest Diagnostics. But it came back, and I'm at theraputic levels for Coumadin. So no more Lovanox injections. One cheer for me.

My doctor was delighted I was in theraputic levels for Coumadin, but he became upset again when I told him the hospital discharged me without going over with me the dietary restrictions. I now have to avoid my favorites: Spinach, broccoli, cranberries, and - GASP! - green tea. That last hurts. I drink as much tea, green and black, as the British do. Or I did. No longer....

I can have black tea according to The Cleveland Clinic. I feel so much better knowing I'll be able to savor my English Breakfast each morning.

BTW my one complaint about the food at the rehab hospital was the tea. All they served was Lipton. If it ain't Twinings, it ain't tea. :-)

Yes - my wife who is on coumadin had to pull back on salads etc (Vitamin K) - basically anything that is 'green' is a candidate for being coumadin unfriendly.

How long are you on the coumadin? My wife is for life as she has a heart valve replacement.

I don't know. I think standard for a PE is six months, with testing for "genetic" markers. As Peter C pointed out, if they are present I might need to be on it for life. If so, I think I can kiss my dream of riding cross country goodbye.

No.

If the Coumadin has a side effect, work around it.

Machka has the genetic marker, but she is off the Coumadin, and only has to take a high daily dosage of folate. The exception is if she is to undertake long-haul air travel, such as Australia to North America non-stop. Then she has to have injections in the belly of an anti-clotting agent.

The blood specialist we saw (yes, we, because it was an inclusive session) was excellent in his explanations of the condition and outcomes. Except for avoiding the foods high in Vitamin K and the injections for long-haul travel, things chug along nicely. She is doing monthly centuries, and we are planning six months of international bicycle touring from June.

Talk to the doctor about the cross country, don't just assume you can't do it. You might just be pleasantly surprised.

I know precisely nothing about these meds they've got you on... just figure we're often capable of more than we first think. I think you've proved that several times in your journey from the 400+ pound person you once were, no?
