This much improvement is normal. You're doing well, laddie-Buck! Keep it up.

Neil, I've just been reading about your progress, best of luck through the remaining rehab process. I don't think that those of us that have been lucky as far as these things go can really understand your ordeal, but can certainly admire your attitude.

The human body is remarkably adaptive to what we throw at it. Glad to hear things are progressing well.

And I am not sure what the complaints are. I didnt say I would cook him something and bring it to him. I will cook at his place for him once he moves into his house from rehab. Why would one want to cook a nice meal and then drive an hour just to reheat it. Pointless if ya all think logically.

It's teasing Iron Chef! Y'all reading too much into it.

BTW the food here is wonderful, and there's a ton of it. Dinner yesterday (items chosen by me from a menu) was pork with mushroom sauce, peas and mushrooms, corn bread, California white bean soup, tea, and vanilla ice cream. Lunch was open face turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, turkey and rice soup, tea, diet Pepsi, and a cherry brownie.

Extension is at ten on each. It was 10 right 15 left prior to surgery. When you consider I've gotten taller because my legs are now straight my extension improved even if the number didn't change - the hamstrings stretched to match the new knees.

I still need help dressing, undressing, getting into and out of bed, bathing and eliminating.... but less each time. My pain relievers are Celebrex and Percoset. Pain, aside from the numbness, is in the calf muscles, not the incision or joint.

I'm taking physical therapy and occupational therapy, spending four hours a day in CPM machines, and wearing a boot on my right foot at night to keep the nerve damage from becoming a new normal. My hunger has returned, I'm eating without digestive problems and I have regular stools. In short, I feel like I should be suffering more. Or is this much improvement so soon normal?
I can't tell you whether it's normal or not, having never been there. If you want to suffer more I'm sure the doctors can arrange it...

Seriously, it could just be a healthy dose of the same mindset that got you from being 400+ pounds to where you are now. You don't do that without a good dollop of positive spirit.

If the hoagies are that good feel free to bring one over and if it's still fresh when it gets here we can talk. Can't say fairer than that. Just hope the TSA guys don't take a fancy to it on the way through.

Seriously, I am rather partial to a hoagie, and even more partial to Philadelphia cheesesteak even if I've never actually eaten it in Philadelphia. Come to think of it, about all I have done in Philadelphia is travel to and from the airport. The best place I ever ate cheesesteak (which was also the place I ate my first ever cheesesteak and had my first beer in the US) is a tiny little place that's seriously in the back end of nowhere in central PA.

According to the folks here, too much is counterproductive. I have two hours of PT a day and one of OT - the latter today consisted of negotiating a model bathroom to determine how I'll handle a walker at home. Of course anything I learn is applied in other activities.

My exchange with my PT person echoes your statement. She told me I seemed a lot more committed than most of her clients. I cited the weight loss as an example.

You had better be careful of all that nice food there or you'll be packing on the pounds before you know it ! But it sure sounds like you are in a great place and well on your way to a fine recovery..

I'm looking forward to seeing you with Isaac Saturday Neil. I joined BF in 2010 and had been lurking Since 2009 and it honestly was "The Historians" posts that first showed a young (overweight) man interested in cycling that all cyclist were not one in the same, that there were truly a million different ways to enjoy being on the bike, as well as reasons to be great-full to be able to ride one. Get well soon bud, and I hope to be out there soon riding with you again.

I was 5' 11" at my January physical. Most of the height increase is because of the straightening of the legs. The rest is from the added height of the implants.

Other changes:

I no longer need my expensive orthotics. They are useless. Now I still might need to use something for my flat feet, but not yet.

Since my legs are now straight and level, my hips are too. And so is my back, and shoulders. Or at least they will be when I get through PT.

A bit off topic, but... In 2010 my Daughter spent almost three weeks in Europe, she visited Iceland, England, France and Italy. She and we figured that the food in France and Italy would be great and it was, but her favorite food was in London, surprising us all.

Thank you.

BTW, the hospital cancelled my planned "push Neil in his wheelchair as fast as possible" time trial.

Pain level hit 7 and stuck there for the first time. I've felt miserable since the daughter of my roommate from hell barged into the room at 7:30 AM. (Visiting hours are 4 to 9 PM.) Then in PT I hit flexion 100 and extension 5, both right and left, and my day felt better even if the pain didn't.

Chillin' in Bryn Mawr with ice and Percoset.

The surgeon used sutures backed with surgical glue, topped with a silver-treated antibacterial dressing. When it finally heals the scar will be a faint white line on the knee area.

Ninth day since surgery, and second I've hit pain levels 7 and 8. My legs are swollen from ankle to knee. Still I have to push through.... I continued on the PT today. Part of it was standing while assembling a jigsaw puzzle - the purpose was to see how I handled standing while mentally occupied. I managed 5 minutes at a time.

Curious exercises, although I guess I can see the point behind them.

Sounds like the spirit that saw you lose so much weight is continuing to see you through here... and hopefully the fact there's a few of us in here rooting for you will also help
