seeking training schedule suggestions

Due to hand surgery, my doc doesn't want me on a bike until July 1, maybe earlier with a splint. (When I scheduled the surgery, he said June 1....)

I'm turning 70 this Summer, so I'd like to do a 70 mile ride. I've got a vacation scheduled for the last 2 weeks of July, during which time I won't be riding. I'm 235, 5' 7", very much out of shape now. (I figured my weight and conditioning made this the better forum for this Q than the 50+ forum.)

If you've got advice for me on a training schedule, I'd be glad to read it. I very much want to avoid injury, so if I have to postpone the ride until next year, so be it.

Thanks in advance.

So what's the rush?

We older guys take longer to heal. Therefore, diet and exercise for a year. Give your hand time to completely heal. Exercise your hand in order to make it even stronger than ever before. Join the YMCA and start swimming and training indoors on a trainer in order to get your cardio up. Get a hardtail mtb in order to ride long rides on the weekends. Next, sell your mtb and get a bonafide road bike just about a couple months before your scheduled 70 mile ride, next year. Avoid the sweets and carbs. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables.

Get the best road bike you can afford for the 70 miler....

Good Luck!

Listen to your doctor.

How about riding on a trainer, no hands. this will keep your butt and legs in shape.
