San Francisco: Driver Assaults Market Street Cyclist With Car
I will just post this here because it troubles me very much:
Police: Teen Driver Assaults Market Street Cyclist With Car, Tries (And Fails) To Flee: SFist
Please always remember to ride safe. It's dangerous out there for us.

Perhaps don't provoke the motorist by banging on the window? It's something I might do too, but I am hoping that when the opportunity/need arises I will be strong enough to resist the temptation and just go on my merry way. No excuse for the driver to do that, of course.

Oh boy. I wonder what happened earlier that led to the cyclist banging on her window.

She ran him over, pretty cold blooded.
The cyclist "banged on the window" of the driver's red Hyundai Accent, police say, then passed the car and took his place in the lane in front of her.
The driver then ran the cyclist "over...with her vehicle" in what police characterize as an "Assault (Vehicle vs. Bicycle)."

This is terrible. Regardless of whether she was provoked or not the driver needs to spend time in jail. Looks like she is out on bail:

Until her attorney coaches her, and it becomes, "He startled me, and I mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake, and then panicked.".

Banging on the window and then riding in front of the same car.
Ugh.
I usually bang on the window enough so they stop and open the door, which I then kick back into them and ride off...
...just like Steven Seagal would do ... before flying off to a celebratory function in Grozny.

As Bike To Work Day DC approaches in less than 24 hours, I wonder if bike commuting simply isn't for everyone.
Every day that I commute, the final segment is a videogame-like zoo - buses, utility trucks and vans, etc. all in this mad dance of seemingly random U-turns, abrupt lane changes, etc. The stuff I hear other commuters complaining about (close calls, close passes, etc.) happens to me all that time in that segment, so much that if I got mad at every perceived offense, I just wouldn't be able to commute for long.

This guy got 5 years in jail for brake-checking a group of riders, and causing similar injuries.
His ethnicity and prestigious career didn't get him off the hook.
