Alternative commuter bike - GT?
I've been wondering, as many threads have been started recently asking what people recommend for a good commuter bike why we don't have a thread with this information somewhere? Say a sub $500 commuter bike thread?
Anyhow, thought I might add the GT Timberline and see what others thought about this bike as a good alternative for a commuter bike?

I commute in a GT Timberline - 1997, I believe. It was bought for me used last year after my last bike, a Diamondback Sorrento, was stolen. I would really rather something with some more road components, but once I put some skinny tires on, it should be fine. I'm thinking of putting drop bars on eventually - but I may just end up upgrading to a road bike next year.
The bike itself I find to be very sturdy. I like it.

I've been commuting for the last ... five? six? months on a GT Timberline. I wouldn't mind a slightly lighter frame, but otherwise I'm happy with it. Does the job, even on the heinously potholed roads hereabouts.

I've got a GT Avalanche that suits me fine. Cheaper i think, except it is a "mountain" frame so 26" wheels and no cushy seatpost.
And Sydney roads are the suck. The Eastern suburbs are just about as bad as it gets too! (Bad drivers - thanks UNSW - and crap roads)

I don't know the Timberline, but I've been commuting on a 2004 GT Palomar. I got it at a sporting goods store for $150. It's got almost 3000 miles on it now and going strong. I think the accessories I added to it for commuting cost more than the bike itself.

I've also commuted extensively on a GT Timberline. I bought it new in the early 90's(?). Used to mountain bike on it every morning before work (rain or shine) in a "private" and awesome riding area. Now it has full fenders and slick tires among other things and is a very functional commuter. Tough as a tank and just as heavy.
