I want to ride in winter, could use some tires/fenders recommendations.

I've got an 80's Schwinn touring bike I use for commutes, groceries, etc the rest of the year. But I never ride in the winter and would like to change that.

So, I'd love to hear what people use/recommend for 27" tires for winter (no studded, but my city does a terrible job of plowing side streets, so I need a good tire for snow/slush) that would be kind of an "all purpose" tire for when the streets are clean.

And what about fenders? I'm really clueless about that. I did a search at a couple sites and just had no idea what would fit my bike.

Thanks!

For tire size, you'd have to find exactly what the sizing is. Should be printed on the sidewall of the current tire. It sounds like a 650b (or 27.5"). You can then find the right sized tire for it.

Something like this might be a good compromise for riding on combination of clean pavement, slush, moderate snow cover, or harder packed snow:

Schwalbe Nobby Nic Performance Folding MTB Tyre | Chain Reaction Cycles

Fenders, something like this:

An 80s Schwinn is not likely to be 650B. I think he means the old 27", 630mm.

Old school 27" Not going to find many choices these days. Thought about converting to 700C ? Fenders? Check out planet bike for some ideas.

700c fenders should work with 27" wheels it's more the design of the frame that can give you a problem. However traditional bolt on full cover fenders should still work no problem. like these Nyc Tour Composite Hybrid Full Fender, Black, 27"/700cm https://www.amazon.com/Composite-Hyb...2+bike+fenders

but anywhere near here?
https://fortcollins.craigslist.org/bid/5912064805.html

or buy this bike for the fenders
https://fortcollins.craigslist.org/bik/5908628107.html

found these too
Fenders Full hybrid/touring

and ebay

For an all purpose 27 inch commuter tire, just get a reasonably flat proof tire preferably one with a reflective stripe. For fenders, SKS is still probably the best but Planet bikes are also very good. Nashbar is having a 30% sale and I'd pick up what they are selling. Tire selection for 27 inch at Nashbar is limited.

Otherwise get panaracer, schwalbe, and continental all make 27 inch tires. Look for a tire that has flat protection; this will be a bit heavier but it is worth it on a commuter. I would not use a knobby tire for road riding.

Most any fenders you can get will work fine, as long as they fit. They are available in plastic, aluminum, and steel. SKS has fenders called chromoplastic which is some kind of composite with both plastic and aluminum.

I have a 1978 Schwinn Traveler that I fitted with SKS Longboards (45mm): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here is the best video for clear install instructions, they fit perfectly on my Traveler.

In the summer I ride 32 mm Gatorskins and am trying out some Schwalbe Winter's (700x30) this year:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Unfortunately in order to ride on studded tires you are going to have to do a 700c conversion. I have not seen 27" studded tires anywhere. If you are not dealing with a ton of snow or ice like here in Minneapolis, the standard 1 1/4 Schwalbe Marathons should give you great traction and flat protection.

Ok, these SKS look good and in my size and price range: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Chromop...WW6G84C654X65G

Is a Panaracer Pasala too little for winter? I've heard for years about them being perfect for a touring bike like mine, but they seem a little...low profile? for snow. https://www.amazon.com/Panaracer-Pas...naracer+pasela

Any opinions on these:
https://www.biketiresdirect.com/prod...r-ride-27-inch
https://www.biketiresdirect.com/prod...7-x-1-1-4-tire
https://www.biketiresdirect.com/prod...rosscyclo-tire

All of those are available in 27".

I've no idea how he stays open, but then this is the third location for the store in 3 years.

Edit: and I'm not far off...from the ad: "BIKE of the week price is $369 !"

I like the conti tour ride. If you're willing to spend the money, the schwalbe marathon is your best bet, https://www.biketiresdirect.com/prod...rathon-27-tire
