NICE commute home today! Road bike in lightweight mode with no trunk bag or fenders, nice tail wind, no real motorist issues, all made for a great ride. 15 miles but I felt like I could have gone another 10-15 more.
|
Today, I had the coldest commutes of the season so far, but the cold was no problem. The winter winds kicked in, and man, they are tough. Not only that, the morning commute had a stiff headwind, and as often happens, the wind turned around, and the evening commute was brutal. But hey, I made it again, as always, so it's good. It's a kind of a triumph.
|
Getting a little colder and damper this time of year. Also, getting a little more windy.
|
After 3 days of heavy rains I am able to commute on my bike again. It was a nice uneventful ride to work with clear dark starry skies and temps in the mid 40's f this am.
|
I chickened out this morning and drove.. after four days of the wind I'm tired of dealing with it.

*edit* a couple months ago a different pickup tried the same maneuver at this same spot, passing while I had my left arm out, and he was faced with a vehicle on that side road turning right, into the oncoming direction. Seeing the dangerous near collision I pulled off the pavement and stopped, the truck had to stop (in the oncoming lane) and the vehicle that had just turned also had to stop. Then the pickup had to turn back into his own lane so that he could go, and the oncoming car could go, and then everyone else could continue on and I could make my left turn.
I swear these people are just downright jerkwad idiots! All well-behaved traffic on my route today. 42F to start out but warming to 72F. Happy Friday! |

That was crazy. It's a situation I try to anticipate too, but so far have only seen one close call. The person turning right from the side road does not look right to see the bicycle or the passing vehicle until they're already pulling out. Maybe try taking the lane earlier if possible, but it probably wouldn't help if they're determined to get around you.
All well-behaved traffic on my route today. 42F to start out but warming to 72F. Happy Friday! This morning my son had a stomach bug around 4 AM. Since we were already up anyway I decided to just go ahead and head out about 5:15 instead of my normal 6 AM. I decided to take my old route, which is shorter by a mile, but MUCH more hilly. And boy howdy is it DARK at the 5 AM hour this time of year, just before the time change. But since it was so early, a grand total of 10 cars passed me (same direction) in 14.5 miles. We have rain and a cold front moving through today, with wind shifting around to the north and temps dropping from above 60 at 5 AM to around 45 degrees by this afternoon. And since yesterday was so nice I left the car at work and rode home, then rode back to work this morning. This also let me take the road bike yesterday, then switch to the e-bike this morning which helped with the gusting south headwinds. Got to the office at 6:15 AM, which gave me plenty of time to eat my breakfast, drink coffee, watch some YT videos and have a shower, and still be ready by 7:30. Not bad! And then when it's raining and 45° with a stiff north headwind I'll have my car to drive home this afternoon. :thumb: |
Kind of a rough morning. It's day 6 of this rotten cold/flu thing I picked up. I felt miserable on Monday and Tuesday, but stuck through it and came to work anyway. Wednesday and Thursday I was feeling too bad to even make an attempt. This morning I was back to the same amount of misery I was in on Tuesday so I decided to come in to work for at least a little bit.
Weather this morning was 30F with a wind advisory and light snow falling. The snow wasn't sticking much as the ground was too warm, so it mostly made the pavement wet with occasional bits of accumulation in the grass. The wind was blowing 30+ mph with gusts much higher than that. Had a big fight with my teenage son who insisted that his t-shirt and shorts were plenty to wear to school and that "nobody else at school wears a jacket." Personally, I feel that if we wants to decide to freeze then that's his decision and he can figure it out the hard way. However my wife is the worried mom and I needed to back her up on it. There were no winners in the fight. I can't physically hold my son down and force him to wear a jacket. So he walked out the door underdressed, and my wife and I walked out the door upset. Ugh. There's a reason that kids aren't born as teenagers as if they were we wouldn't re-populate the earth. Decided that the weather wasn't bad enough to ride the winter bike, but probably not nice enough for the road bike. I opted for the hybrid with fenders. Then I realized my chain for that bike was still sitting in my jar of lube after I cleaned it. So I wound up spending 10 minutes putting the chain back on the bike. The ride was cold. Really cold. Had to go straight into that brutal wind and couldn't maintain any sort of speed. 9 mph was about the fastest I could hit, and that was on steep downhills. Stopped once to move a tree limb off the MUP. Got to work to realize my badge had been disabled. They're upgrading the security system and everyone got new badges while I was out sick. They'd given a co-worker my badge and turned off my old one. My co-worker thought he was doing me a favor by taking my new badge across town to our main company office. So I had to go through the interrogation process to get in the building. Thankfully the badge access guy was agreeable and turned my old badge back on for the time being. At least some kind soul brought doughnuts to an otherwise bleak day. |
Wednesday's commutes were hard, and yesterday's were extremely hard, because of wind. I didn't feel like riding this morning, but I knew in my heart I would be fine if I rode again, and I did. And I was rewarded. It's bright and sunny though cool. The wind is very weak, and it was a tailwind this morning. Because of all my efforts at fighting headwinds, I was very strong, and I went extremely fast with little effort.
I was climbing my one steep hill which never gets easy. Mind you, I'm not fast, but I am a good hill climber. And as I was chugging up the steep part, a young woman on a racing bike flew by me as if I was standing still. I chuckled, and I was glad for her. They were demolishing a Department of Sanitation building at W 14 St and the Hudson River. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ro...w1814-h1360-no |

Another nice ride, though rain and colder weather is supposed to be coming tonight. I made a couple short deviations from the normal route; the first led to the discovery that the 50 yards on that street (which I normally bypass by going in to the parking lot for weekend lunch) is really, really rough. The county has better roads than the city! Then I stayed on the main drag coming in to the office, which narrows from four lanes to two where I normally turn off. Strangely most of the traffic turned off too, so that last 3/4 mile was pretty quiet.

It was cold but only one finger was really suffering. Beautiful scenery along the Potomac this morning, with the fog dancing on the river and the rowers and crew teams out.

These are my GPS tracks from this morning's commute. Wow, I was fast today. I ride from lower-ish Manhattan to the Bronx. |
Monday I need to drop off my truck at the body shop for a long-delayed repair and pick up a rental. At this rate I might lose my seat-time resistance.
August 1: Mine is the blue one. Just scratches. 83yo lady driving the Jag drove through the handicap space, through the guard rail, onto the next terrace of parking. This topped off a morning of receiving a root canal, and then waiting 45 minutes behind a painkiller addict for my antibiotic scrip while this happened in the parking lot. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4291/...bb43c86d_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4321/...51fc7eda_c.jpg |
Wind and more wind.. cold wind. Only commuting four days this week.

Another cool ride, 2C/36F, with a moderate breeze that was a headwind for part of it, actually the beginning part when I hadn't really warmed up and I wondered if I should have dressed warmer. After I turned the corner and the breeze was a crosswind, I warmed up and was fine.
This time, I wore some lightweight running tights, much lighter than my regular tights, and I was perfectly fine (once I was out of the headwind). These were a good purchase (last year). |

I don't cross the GW Bridge. In fact, in the four years since I've been back in The City, I haven't even crossed the bridge on my bike once, which is pretty dumb. It's a gateway to nice rides. Ask ptempel, as he commutes over the bridge. They closed the southern path for renovations, and it has no stairs. The northern path has stairs. Six flights? I did not remember that!
These are my GPS tracks from this morning's commute. Wow, I was fast today. I ride from lower-ish Manhattan to the Bronx. https://www.bikeforums.net/commuting...-sidewalk.html I still do not see much progress on the south sidewalk. I'm doubting that they will be done by the end of the year. But the north side is not really that bad. Just have to get used to the stairs a bit. ;) I also take the stair down to 179th street. A fellow commuter, Jack, mentioned that he saw two guys get ticketed for riding down the ramp there. Yeah, there's six flights. But the biggest are the two for the overpass on the NJ side. The others are fairly short. Only real drawback so far is that I'm chewing up my Look cleats a bit more with the metal stairs. No riding for me today since I took the day off. Looks like I missed some yucky rain this morning which is ok with me... |
Dentist appointment this morning, so I left the house a little earlier. Sky was dark, as the clouds were covering the sun's attempt to rise. 36F with a very stiff headwind.
Checked the forecast before I left the house. It assured me 0% chance of precipitation, so I opted to ride the road bike. Halfway to the dentists' office it started to snow. Thankfully not enough to stick, but definitely greater than 0% precipitation. Weird phenomena with weather forecasters and politicians: no matter how may times they lie to us we keep believing what they say. |
First frost this morning! Only in the front/side for some reason, maybe the trees kept it off the back yard. That cold led to some serious digging trying to find clothes appropriate for the 30s; I think I found the secret stash, except I'm still looking for the cold weather gloves. Nice ride when I finally got started!

First ride after 3 years! Was 45F when I left the house. A little chili but overall not too bad. It's only 11.9 miles with 500ft elevation gain. Definitely need to make some saddle adjustments. I couldn't keep from sliding forward. There's a huge ~1.5 car-wide shoulder for 90% of my commute, so no crazy motorists this morning. :)

34F and clear. Beautiful sunrise. Shorts still OK (at least w/ shoes and socks). Fingerless gloves 100% not OK! Fair amount of pain when I got into the office and blood started returning!
|
It’s going on 10 and I’m still waiting for my rental. Stupid cars.

Windy as could be this morning. I was riding in on my brand new saddle that the shop had installed over the weekend. I should have duble checked that inslallation...I thought it felt weird and I came to realize he had not tightened it down enough. The saddle had slid back as far as it could go.

Well, weather was bad enough this morning that for the first time since I started riding this year, I contemplated using my car instead. 50+ km/h gust wind with downpour heavy enough to close down roads. Temperature was 10C. My mindset changed when I heard on the news that a major highway ramp (well, for here anyway) was closed due to a truck overturning and loosing its load. As if weather wasn't enough, traffic was therefore going to be really bad. A 30 minutes drive would now take at least an hour and a half (I know that's normal for some of you but it's one of the main reason I'm commuting by bike, I hate traffic).
Well, wind was strong enough to push me sideways several times so I had to be careful when sharing the road with cars. On four occasions, water overflowed on the path and road so high that I had to raise my feet near the handlebar to avoid getting my feet soaked as I coasted through them. I had shoe covers but they could not prevent that much water from seeping in my shoes if I wasn't careful. Because of the low enough temperature, my raining gear worked OK to keep me dry from the rain. I didn't feel soaked but when I got to work and removed my rain gears, I was wet, but not cold, which is OK by me. Since my riding commute is like a shoe horse, the speed I lost because of the wind on my first leg, I almost made up for it on the other leg. I only lost 4 minutes (out of my usual 45 minutes) because of the weather. All in all, I'm glad I chose to ride this morning instead of taking my car. So, still only twice I used my car (both because of personal meetings during work time) to commute since I started this year on April 3rd :) Edit: I just checked the last 24 hours weather stats and at the time I was riding, winds were sustained at 49 km/h with gusts at 72 km/h. No wonder I was pushed around... |
