Bikes: 2017 Specialized Sequoia, 99 Gary Fisher Aquila, 88 Diamondback Apex, 89 Trek 400, 85 Specialized Rock Hopper, 86 Peugeot Triathlon

I have two of these. Size small. I like the locking mechanism. Big enough to carry clothes on one bag and lunch in the other.

I've been in like three bike shops in my life that have any sort of practical bags/panniers in stock, let alone a variety to compare and contrast...we don't all have access to the bike shops of NYC. Just something to bear in mind.

Oh that's too bad. Where are you?

By comparison, Portland, OR sounds like bike shop heaven.

Currently in Minsk Belarus, but previously lived in Flagstaff, AZ. Even though northern AZ is thought of as a biking mecca of sorts, the shops rarely had touring or commuting related gear on hand. Also previously in Lawrence, KS, near home of the Dirty Kanza 200 bike race attended by thousands every year had very little in the way of bags. Just saying if you aren't in a major city you likely won't get hands on without driving a ways, and there are lots of shops out there that just have the latest and greatest in highly priced mountain and road bikes and very little in terms of useful gear for commuters and tourers.

Maybe you could ask in the Europe regional subforum.

john mct, you're right, of all the bike shops in western massachusetts, and there are plenty, i've gone to at least 8 of them and none carry anything other than the topeak stuff. i did manage to see an ortlieb backpack at an REI close to me.

i'm still debating what to do as Arkel seems like it has a great warranty but ortlieb has the reputation.

i'm so wrapped up in panniers, i haven't really decided on a rack yet which i think i should look further into.

either way, i like nice things and i know i wont be going wrong with any of the suggestions here.

Finally just gorilla taped horizontally around the whole bag to the rack. One low speed crash put a hole in the bottom rendering it non-waterproof... Not saying they're crap but I surely wouldn't expect a lifetime out of them unless all your roads are smooth as glass and you never crash...
Well that's a first for me, I guess there had to be somebody out there with a bad experience. I'm glad at least you got your full refund though (whether REI or Ortlieb, somebody's standing behind their product)
