Assuming the email push works, then I'll know, and yeah I guess when I get an email alert I go check the weather forecast to see what that rain looks like. My typical method is just to google "weather <zipcode>" and use the simple graphical summary that google puts above the search results. I guess I could also hunt up doppler for more specifics.

Just got an alert for "AM Showers Tomorrow!" Checked the forecast and it says max 31% chance of rain about 11am.

Coincidentally, I had already planned to drive tomorrow as I need to pop out and take care of some distant errands at lunch.

We had a Water spout Monday , a tornado on the water.. few years ago one came ashore from the sea, and tore up buildings..

FWIW: darksky.net ; very good hyperlocal forecasts. Here in CO, rain is often bursty, so leaving a little earlier or later can mitigate the impact considerably. Having grown up in SoCal ... I'm not sure it would make a difference, but it may be worth a try. The iOS (and Android) app versions can be configured to show you a summary at any given time, or rain within the next hour.

Don't fall for the free trials; their billing department sucks almost as much as their customer service, but if you put a phone on the free plan, keep cell data turned off for all apps except the actual phone and messaging app, and take advantage of available WiFi whenever possible for everything else, (assuming you have WiFi in some place where you can update apps and such daily - even if just at home it's no less useful than a tablet and a landline) you can make a $50 phone purchase and $10 account credit last a long time.

Cool, looks like the Republic Wireless model is spreading. If (let's face it, When) I eventually get a smartphone, it will be an almost-completely-wifi-otherwise-pay-as-you-go type thing. I'll keep that in my back pocket.

Dressing the same rain or shine also 'solves' the problem, if you have one outfit that does what you need in all conditions.

FWIW I rode in to work this morning on dry streets under scattered clouds. Around 9am I looked out the window and saw the streets were wet; it had rained, but I had not gotten an alert.

For the late summer rains it is hot so getting drenched is lucky. Sadly it does not happen enough.

In the winter here the air is cool and when it rains it can be in the low 40s. In those conditions I typically wear a wool jersey and knee warmers anyway and find that they are warm enough when wet. When it gets not so fun is when it rains in the morning and then I have to put on damp shorts and jersey for the ride home, but once I get going I forget.

I'm not getting my alerts any more, either. I guess I should tweak my filter, but I'm not even sure where to find it.

During storm season I watch the radar about 30min before I leave. From there I can tell which way cells/systems are heading and if they may cross my path. Sometimes it is a race to beat the storm, other times I know it will be better to wait before leaving. But most often it will get me anyway.

I carry waterproof shell top and bottom every day regardless of the forecast (in Chicago). It's not a lot of extra stuff, and I don't worry about the weather.

I'm definitely not getting my alerts either; little rain yesterday, and big rain overnight and today, but no alert.

I went into ifttt.com to try to figure out what was going on, I see logs of failed alerts the past few days, with complaints of "there was a problem with the gmail service". I bet the ifttt/gmail connection got severed when I changed my gmail password. I re-linked iftt to google authentication, hopefully that does the trick.

Aha, same here. We'll get rain later this week, so I'll know soon. Easier for me to test than for you, as we get rain at least once a week.

ifttt.com is just not working for me. For some reason it just stopped being able to send me emails. I can see in the 'recent activity' piles of attempted alerts that failed for some mysterious reason. So I canceled my ifttt.com account.

I signed up for daily email forecasts from weatherunderground, and will try to throttle them using gmail filters.

It is raining cats & dogs right now, plus raucous thunder. It also drizzled Saturday morning a few weeks ago. I bet this is at least a 30-year record for August rainfall

After several weeks of storms, last week dried out and back to sunny 111-113F, but now with Nora remnants pushing up the humidity is increasing along with potential for mid week storms again.
