First ride this morning on the Timberjack. What a great bike! Nothing bad to say about it. Doing my research paid off this time.

going home a little early today to take the travel trailer back to storage
ptempel I ride with my kids every weekend. They’re small so I can put kiddo on his push bike and babies in the trailer and go about a mile to Dunkin Donuts. At this point it’s about the shared activity. Wife gets to sleep in.

Mild and humid this morning, the rain having stopped during the night. Almost immediately on leaving the house I noticed my headlight flickering and after about a mile it gave out entirely. So I pulled into a driveway by a retirement home where there's a bright streetlight so I could figure out the problem.

As I slowed down, I paid little attention to a white thing on the ground, assuming it was a plastic grocery bag blowing in the wind. When it turned around and raised its little black head and looked straight at me, it got my attention. Good morning mister skunk, dont mind me! I got away pdq and futzed with my light somewhere else.

Sure was a funny looking skunk, all white except for its head and feet. I would have taken its photo, but... eh.

Fortunately there's photos on Google...

Just one day for riding this week. I'm mainly having to drive more because of kid taxi duties. I could have ridden Monday and Tuesday, but rain changed my mind. The morning rides in would have been fine, but I was glad I didn't have to ride in the heavier rain that started falling just before 5pm both days.

I rode today and it was quite pleasant at 55F. I hope the next couple of weeks work out and I can ride at least 3 days a week.

Forgot to mention...
I saw one of those billboard trucks this morning. Have you all seen these? The truck is the about the size of a U-Haul, but the back is very narrow (no room for carrying deliveries) and its only purpose is to be a mobile billboard. These things bug me because they are simply burning gas and creating more traffic simply to advertise something.

Spring is being a trickster this morning, 35F when I left the house. It was 60 on the ride home yesterday and supposed to be 65 today. I'm pretty sure nothing I wore this morning will be usable for the ride home. No complaints though, love the warmer weather!

Keep it up! I started taking my kids down to the bookstore/coffee shop for sweets disguised as coffee most summer weekends. Nine years later, the younger one rode across the country with me!

Agreed. I've seen them driving around midtown Manhattan in rush hour. I have no idea what they advertise, but if I noticed, I'd boycott that business for sure.

Commuting has been pretty good lately, with the slightly warmer weather helping a bit. On Monday night, however, someone stole the rear light off of my bike, and I'm pretty peeved about it.

I had to run up to my apartment to get changed and grab a few things before heading back out, so rather than carry my bike up the four flights, I simply locked it to the railing at the bottom of the stairs. This was in the lobby of my building, which doesn't have a door-man, and has two stairways on opposite sides, not visible from the sidewalk. This means that someone would have had to be buzzed in, or used a key to open the main door to the building, before even seeing that the bike was there.

Normally I take my lights with me when locking up the bike, but I figured it was fine since it was in my building. So that means either some other tenant of the building, or some dirtbag delivery guy decided to steal it (and to think I almost left the entire bike unlocked, thinking it was relatively safe for a short time inside the lobby).

It's only a light, but it's pretty annoying because it was a gift from my GF, and more importantly because it was presumably another biker that stole it, which is pretty pathetic. It was a pretty unique looking model, so if I see anyone in the neighborhood riding around with it on their bike...

The question of the bike in the building remains. They say it's easier to get forgiveness than to get permission.

I don't see why it would cause an issue, especially if you are using the freight elevator. The elevator and entrance to my office are the only times I might be considered a nuisance to others, despite the fact that I manage to hold more doors and be generally more courteous than some others simply by virtue of the fact that I'm paying attention and not staring at a phone.

We used to have an all white (or nearly all white) skunk that roamed my college campus (Boston area). My friends and I called it the albino skunk. Have never seen one since.

Last night the MUP was very busy, it was around 72F at 7PM. I had two dogs on long extendable leashes cross right in front of me, fortunately I think the owners either dropped the leashes or the extenders did their thing because no harm came to them. I was having issues with my Polaroid XS100 so it didn't record that incident. I wanted to review whether there were telltale signs I missed when passing the group of walkers. Even though the owners apologized, I definitely know I was partly to blame for going fast, because I used my bell and gave the humans plenty of warning but didn't even realize there were dogs meandering around too.

Today's my 4th consecutive day bike commuting, my previous max was 3 days. Yesterday morning was a bit rough but today I set a bunch of wind-assisted Strava segment PRs even though my legs didn't feel like they could push out too much power. Tomorrow the weather starts going back to being just OK, so I'll probably take a rest day.

Sorry about your tail light. It sucks.

It's a huge university, and I half expect a "that's not how we do things here" response. I still haven't decided. I locked my bike up outside today. If I get away with bringing it in more, maybe I'll make a habit of it.

It might seem that way but they’re actually carrying curtains for French doors that have been dry cleaned and would wrinkle if folded

Ha! Or perhaps window panes and mirrors?
And check out this new forum design!

I had to drive again today. Probably good though. I didn't get to bed until 1am after taking my kids to see Infinity War last night. The Dad life.

Felt slow this morning but weather is beautiful - 43F, sunny, little wind. Someone else mentioned the masses on the MUP and that's certainly the case here. It's so nice in winter to have the trail to myself and the few other stalwart commuters. I guess the price of nice weather is having to share MY trail!

Medium overcast this morning, and I was glad I took the time to put on knee warmers.

Saw a great blue heron last night in a sad little ditch. This ditch drains a couple of ponds, of which at least one is currently covered in floating goose poop and grass clippings. The ditch itself is concreted on the bottom and sides, but instead of the normal smooth concrete, it looks like it was shoveled over the mud and rocks that were there before. I can't imagine the bird is finding anything good to eat there.

The forecast said the rain would start after I got to work, but it started in the middle of my ride. By the time I got to work, it was raining heavily. But I was fine, and I'm really glad I rode. All I had on (on top) was a wool t-shirt, so I changed out of that and put on a dress shirt.

robertorolfo 04-27-18 10:10 AM

I got a little wet this morning as well, but hopefully the afternoon will be better, since I have some errands to run (with the bike) after work.

Last night was really a nice temp for riding, but I got a flat about 50 yards from my building (nice size construction nail). Can't decide whether that is good luck or bad luck, but I'm leaning towards the former because I still got my full ride in.

wphamilton 04-27-18 02:40 PM

Got a compliment on my chain case yesterday, when another biker rolled up beside me at the stop light. Which itself happens only every few year ... and even more odd when we're expecting t-storms and there's hardly anyone out. :twitchy:

On the downside, that it's remarkable at all probably means it's too obviously DIY, makes me want to rebuild it. Coroplast sides getting kind of ratty maybe ...

Darth Lefty 04-27-18 09:44 PM

Near the start of my commute there’s an eagle nest with a fledgling. The state parks dept and birdwatching busybodies have put up a bunch of confusing signs and caution tape. It’s really not clear if the trail is closed, or diverted, or if you’re just not supposed to stop within the boundary. It’s right above the 2017 ARBT landslide and I’ve got a theory they’re never going to fix that as long as the eagles are there.

37F this morning going to low 70's this afternoon - 30+ degree spread. Don't know what that means just seems weird

Same thing here. This days are annoying. I have to dress up like the 'I can't put my arms down' kid from A Christmas Story on the way to work, but bring shirts a t shirt with me for the ride home. Note to the weather, May starts tomorrow. Please cancel winter.

My commute started weird this morning. I dropped my car off at the repair place to have something done and biked in from there. As I'm standing behind my car taking the bike off the trunk rack outside the garage bays of the repair place, the guy outside the bay next to me floors his Jeep into the garage door. Went right through it. Was sitting stopped outside the closed door and gunned the trunk right into the door. Then got out and said "The brakes slipped" like it was no big deal.

Weird start to the morning.

Fortunately the repair place is only a mile from my office and its' stupid cold out so I didn't have to ride very far in the 38 degree temps and 20 mph head wind. So that worked out well!

I guess the weatherman didn't know you were going to be so slow on Friday. :D

Nice morning today here, if chilly. Frecast to warm up 40 degrees by this afternoon. I guess I'll do my sweating on the way home.

noglider 04-30-18 09:41 AM

The wind usually feels like a headwind even when it's not coming from directly in front of you. This morning it was quite strong, but I noticed it was really a crosswind, coming from my left. My route is arc-shaped, curving to the right, so I figured it would turn into a tailwind. And it did. So it started out hard, and it ended up being a screamingly fast ride. It's still a bit cold, but I'm fine with that, and it was bright and sunny, so I had a really nice time.

ridewithgps gives all kinds of statistics, some of which are interesting. My ride was 31 minutes long, and my total time spent stopped was only one minute. That just shows how lucky I am to have this route along the river, in a city with such stressful traffic.

Darth Lefty 04-30-18 12:29 PM

The morning routine went too late to take the bike. :-/
