Check this out - I don't remember ever seeing "Calm" listed for wind. Nice enough I went a few extra miles just for the heck of it

I had a headwind yesterday, and I checked the wind map at midday, and I saw the wind was still moving in the same direction, so I thought, good, I'll have a tailwind. But did I? No, the headwind was stronger than the morning's. Life is so unfair. Well, the wind is still coming from the south now, so I had a tailwind this morning. It barely helped, though, as I had to take Citi Bike to work. The first bike I took didn't have a high ratio, so I tootled along at a really slow pace. Everyone was passing me except for one person, even folks on Citi Bike. These bikes are 50-pound tanks. I swapped bikes at 40th St and got a bike that worked better.

There was a male mallard duck on campus, and as I stopped to say hello, a woman told me she saw him there yesterday with a mate. He was alone this morning, and quacking, perhaps calling for her.

I always think about that when I see a lone mallard duck. Poor avian friend. Gosh, I hope she returned. It's always heartbreaking to think about the ducks who lose their partners.

Lovely day for a ride, with just a few high, thin clouds that may turn into that tropical depression. I'm glad it wasn't raining, since I was late getting out of the house, rode two miles, and had to turn around and go back for my cell phone. Bonus miles!

Also, is it weird that I feel a little unwell when I am indoors, be it office or home, but feel perfectly fine as soon as I start pedaling on my bike? Happens with anyone else? This whole week has been like this for me.

Not uncommon, at all. It's called "sick of work" in my case. Treatment involves taking a day off and going for a really long bike ride.

HardyWeinberg 05-25-18 10:23 AM

54F, gray. Took the 23 mile route in. Also, office closing early today so planning to take that back home too, would be my longest commute day this month. Year, actually.

Quite possible. This is also allergy season here, so maybe I am just allergic to the indoors :p

While the perpetual headwind was out today, I somehow managed to make both lights. I usually have to wait for at least one of them, and it's really rare to not have to wait for both.

I finally replaced the chain on my fixed gear commuting bike, after 8 or 10 thousand miles on it, but I'd evidently worn out the cog also. The chain was making a grinding noise and riding up on the cog - I was mentally prepared for that to be the case but still a little disappointing. I've flipped the wheel to the SS side, nice and silent now, and I'll probably be OK with that until I get around to replacing the cog.

8 or 10 thousand miles is a lot for a FG cog. I had to replace my cog with far fewer kms on it.

Nice ride, felt breezy while I was moving, but calm when I was standing still. Funny how that works.

5/8" chain stretch. I wanted to see how long they would last, wearing the chain and cog together without much maintenance, and TBH I still didn't have a definite objective reason to replace the chain, just a little noise and feeling like I'm pushing it. I'm seriously considering leaving the new chain on the single speed side for 2 or 3 thousand miles and then flipping it to see if it rides ok on the old worn fixed cog again.

Day off today so no commute, but I've got to get out for a ride anyway in this nice weather.

Wow! I don't think I've seen that amount of stretch before. At that level, I'd be worried about my chain ring too.

Wife gets her cast off Wednesday. Not sure if this will lead to more biking due to spring cleaning and sell house project

essiemyra 05-29-18 05:28 AM

Back after a second long weekend , the commute in today was a nice uneventful ride with the temp at 52 f degrees when I left the house.

arsprod 05-29-18 08:49 AM

Hot and muggy this morning heading back to record high temps, yeehaw!

groovestew 05-29-18 08:54 AM

Felt a bit chilly this morning. Tailwind for most of the ride, so that was nice.

For a few commutes now, I've seen the same group of 4 boys with their bikes waiting (for what?) at the top of a ravine as I'm climbing out. I said good morning to them today, but as I was out of breath from the climb, I'm sure it sounded more like "Gu-or-ee". They said good morning back, so I guess they understood me.

54F, sunny, 23 mile route in today (vs 6 mile straight shot or 12 mile normal route)

noglider 05-29-18 11:13 AM

It was in the 60s this morning. I had an important meeting in the morning, so I didn't want to change clothes upon arrival. I wore my work clothes and pedaled slowly so as not to sweat too much. It's an interesting challenge, but that ended up costing more time than changing clothes. I brought shorts and a polo shirt for the rides home.

essiemyra 05-30-18 05:41 AM

This mornings commute was a nice uneventful ride with blue skies and sun. There was also an east wind which is a headwind because I am going east. I did not love that wind this am.

73F and 72 dew point makes for a pretty humid ride. My shirt felt like it was plastered to my back. Fun enough ride though. I paused on the MUP to check out the creek that is running much higher than normal. We have had a lot of rain for about 2 weeks now.

NC mountains are feeling the major amounts rain too. Mudslides have part of I-40 closed. And now they are evacuating communities and campgrounds downstream from Lake Tahoma, a small mountain lake whose dam may fail after a mudslide.

arsprod 05-30-18 07:15 AM

Warm 74 with a headwind. We're supposed to get the remnants of Alberto this morning so expecting a wet ride home. I ducked onto a different trail for change of pace and came across this guy - share the trail

From what I've heard, my great grandfather made a pretty amazing snapping turtle soup. I've never tried it, myself.

Although my wife's from Boone, and vacationed in Little Switzerland, I'd never heard of Lake Tahoma. Is this a water supply reservoir?

noglider 05-30-18 08:39 AM

The regular weather pattern has returned. I get a headwind in each direction. :foo:

It's a little private lake. I've never been there, just saw it in the news. I'm hearing now it was more of a precautionary thing until they could better assess in the daylight.
