Bike to Work day which automatically means it will either rain or threaten rain... today threatened rain. Also means I have to leave early to be part of the festivities. For that past 5 years I've got to be part of "blessing of the bikes" with a priest and minister friends both of whom are commuters. It's tongue in cheek but fun for us and they keep asking us back!

I forgot to mention: in heavy midtown traffic, a taxi beside me started encroaching on my space. His window was open an inch or two, so I just said loudly, in a nice voice, "not too close please, not too close," and he stopped. :thumb:

Today was Bike To Work Day, and I only saw one bike in my entire 15-mile commute to work. My bike. :(

At the stops in Seattle, there were more cyclists than usual, but it didn't seem to be the case to the east. Even the breakfast was more sparsely attended than in past years, though each of the last two years I remember it being bright and sunny. |
I saw five other cyclists this morning not including me. Usually see maybe only one. 2 bike racks were full.

The wind was pretty crazy this morning for sure, but I've enjoyed the past couple of days with a few fewer riders on the road. |
I’ve had a frantic few weeks without riding. Since my wife can’t drive with her busted foot and will accept no help, my hours at work are bracketed by hers... but she works 3-4 days a week, late and uneven hours. I’m taking a lot of work home, and working after the kids go to bed, sometimes very late. On top of this we’ve been in a campaign to prepare our house for sale, to upgrade number of rooms and school district. She’s really killing herself to work on the house, painting and cleaning and de-cluttering. But she still needs me to lift and drive. I’ve cruelly kidded her she should break her ankle more often. |

The wind was pretty crazy this morning for sure, but I've enjoyed the past couple of days with a few fewer riders on the road. I've come to enjoy riding in bad weather, because it reduces the number of people on the Greenway. I rode on it Wednesday night in the rain, and interestingly, the other cyclists didn't look unhappy. The few of us had discovered the secret of how nice it is. |
Monday Monday. I left early and went to the gym for a bit before work.
We have had overcast skies and off and on rain since last Tuesday. So far I've only felt a sprinkle while riding though. The humidity has reached July levels though. It came quick this year. Three day weekend coming up. I believe I'll have Friday off instead of Memorial Day Monday. |
Cooler this morning..perfect. Put my new wheel on this weekend. Ordered the wrong one so had to switch from 8 speed cassette to 7 speed freewheel. Already the gearing seems to match my commute better, with the 8 speed could never find the gear!

Temperature was cool for late spring (68F), so I wore one of my heavier SS jerseys -- soon it'll be too hot for this one. After the rain last night, though, the humidity was barely non-condensing. Maybe.
A couple points of interest. First, last night's thunderstorm brought down a bunch of noodles from the pecans, as well as some other debris from older trees in the neighborhood. Good news: my wife may make it through pecan season spring without allergies hitting her too hard. Bad news: more things to watch for while riding. Second, there was a maintenance machine on the municipal rail line this morning. I think it is one of those that replaces ties (sleepers) under the track. It triggered the warning light, and gave me a green light parallel to the track, at one busy intersection. I beat it to the next crossing, but two miles down the road (and a school zone for me), it had almost caught back up to this "speedy" cyclist. ;) |
The 10-day forecast says I need to buy some flippers, and maybe a snorkel mask. Today was nice though.

55F, gray. Took the 23 mile route in, w/ the killer climb 4 miles from the office.

50F and partly cloudy, pretty easy ride in. Only problem is forgot my dress shirt at home...hope my coworkers don't mind me blinding them all day with my safety shirt.

Consecutive bicycle work commute number 533:
Beautiful morning. 51°F and the wind hadn't yet come up. Took the road bike with my freshly waxed chain and silently glided down the MUP for 2/3rds of my trip. The remaining 3rd on the streets was pleasantly uneventful. I think I saw a dead rat on the MUP. I almost turned around to confirm, but I had a good rhythm going. I marked the location in my head and made a note to look closer when I ride across town to a client's office after my lunch meeting. Supposed to be rain this evening. Chances of precipitation start to increase around 4 PM. Hopefully I didn't invite disaster for the ride home tonight by riding a non-fendered bicycle. |
50 something temps in the morning. Uneventful commute. Wasn't feeling a 100% so took it nice n easy. 50% chance of rain later today. I think today might be the day I finally hit rain on my commute.

I'm going to get wet tonight on the way to rehearsal. I think I'll wear street clothes and carry another set, rather than cycling clothes, and if I get very wet, I'll change at rehearsal. |
Last night's ride was lovely; nice south (cross/tail) wind, clear, mostly uneventful. (But why do people driving large pickups feel they need to keep one tire on the fog line??) The weather threatened thunderstorms all afternoon, but it missed us. Two days without rain in the last week!
Cool and humid again this morning. There were a few patches of blue, but mostly low, dark clouds. Pleasant temps as long as I was rolling. Looking this post over, do all cyclists turn into amateur weathermen, or is it just the commuters? |

It was a nice uneventful commute this am with the temp above 50 f degrees and partly clear skies.
There is new road work being done on the road that leads to the office where I work. It is just in the beginning stages but between that road work and the road work that is going to be taking place near my home that is starting in June it looks like a lot of road work to me. Those are the two places that I will not be able to escape the road work as they are the only roads that will get me where I am going. |
It was pretty overcast yesterday, just about to rain, when I went down my half mile stretch of the Delaware and Raritan canal. This is in the Trenton suburbs, barely a hundred yards from Route One, car dealers, Jiffy Lube, convenience stores, etc. Several guys fishing.
And a beaver munching on greens at the side of the canal. Not sure if he saw me, or just wasn't bothered. I saw this critter a few months ago, but not since then. I guess he travels up and down the canal. The link at the bottom is a video. It works for me, but I'm not making any promises. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/961/4...587d37be_b.jpg https://farm1.staticflickr.com/982/4...4e029d57_b.jpg https://flic.kr/p/26kZCUo |
