Yesterday's commute home was uneventful. Skies threatened rain but thankfully didn't deliver on the threat!
Today morning was also a nice n easy commute. I am still not feeling a 100%, so taking it easy.
For some reason, on my last two rides, the RWGPS app has failed to record first few miles. It takes a while for it to catch GPS signal and fairly bit longer to start recording time, distance and speed. Maybe its the cloud cover, but it has not happened very often. Will see how it behaves on the ride back home.

I panicked when I saw the temp was 57 and overdressed. Must be some kind of traumatic stress from winter

rhm, that's very nice, and the video worked for me. Do beavers dam canals? Or do they not need to since it's basically still water?

Well, I'm no expert... but as I understand it, beavers instinctively dislike the sound of running water. If they hear that sound, they find clay and sticks and stuff and block it, and they don't stop until the sound stops, or until it seems to be coming from somewhere else. If you leave a cassette recorder playing the sound of running water near where they live, they will bury it in clay and mud and sticks until they can't hear it.

So as long as the water's staying in the canal, I don't think the beavers will mess with it. If it springs a leak, they'll deal with it.

Last night's ride ended up with isolated thundershowers; isolated to where I was at the time. Luckily it wasn't heavy, but every time I saw daylight and turned to it, another cloud came over to fill that gap.

This morning, I put on my dry pair of shoes. Then walked the bike through the grass to the street. Oh, well.

At least the ride was good. Cool, humid but comfortable while rolling, clear, light traffic.

zacster 05-23-18 09:37 AM

It rained yesterday and last night so the streets were all wet with puddles everywhere, but the sun was coming out. Temp was in the low 60s, with a high in the 80s for later.

Can you leave a spare set of clothes at work for backup? I actually leave a few things and swap them out once in a while.

Oh yeah I could have a set at work but don't usually have an issue. Was just a little distracted packing my bag for the day. Probably won't happen again this year

65F and sunny. Took the 23 mile route into the office. I definitely enjoy the longer rural route; as long as one of the cement mixers doesn't drift onto the shoulder and kill me I greatly prefer the lack of intersections

That can't be as bad as the day I arrived and realized I didn't bring pants. That was like living that classic dream of being naked in public.

Been there and done that as well. Button down dress shirt with winter bib tight FTW. I recall having to visit someone upstars in my building to help with their computer. Needless to say, I rescheduled it for the next day...

Today was a good ride in. I missed the rain this morning and only had wet roads. My shoes were still wet from yesterday's commute to the car. So I've stuffed a bunch of roll paper in my shoes to soak up the water. Works well when you have those big roll paper dispensers like we do. :thumb:

Yeah I feel like that would be worse. Mine was just a bunch of oh didn't see you there jokes

Today on the way to work, I passed a construction site where a cable crossed the street. I think they improvised the protective conduit and made it out of wood with sharp corners. My front tire bottomed out on it. A block later, I got off and checked my rim and found it didn't have a flat spot. Boy, some people!

zacster 05-23-18 05:29 PM

I took the Williamsburg Bridge home and just killed it on the climb. The bike lane is wider than my usual route on the Manhattan Bridge so it is always easy to pass. 80 degrees and sunny.

essiemyra 05-24-18 05:10 AM

This mornings commute was a nice uneventful ride in (if you don't count the 2 rabbits who crossed right in front of me so I had to swerve not to hit them)with the temp at 51 f degrees and the sun coming up. I took a different back road which extended my ride a little more.

subgrade 05-24-18 07:54 AM

Saw a cyclist hit a cat just some 50 m ahead of me. The cat took off at full speed, so I think it should be ok, more or less. The cyclist just barely made it without crashing, but also left unscathed.

A warm 69F for the morning ride. Quite pleasant with a bit of a cooling breeze here and there.

I have tomorrow off work instead of Memorial Day Monday. So today is my Friday.

pdlamb 05-24-18 09:18 AM

Brilliant, clear blue sky this morning. What a nice change from the last week or so! Traffic was light, which made the ride even better.

Two more days of school left, and graduation has started. All the city and county schools go to the arena downtown to graduate, which is right on my normal route home. Getting one school's students and families out, and the next one in, makes traffic a mess. The city's finest decided to help last night, and blocked off somewhat random lanes and streets for two blocks all around. I'll take another way home tonight.

No bike commute for me today. Need to leave early to go to airport for a pick up.

Yesterday's commute was an anxious one. The phone's gps problem went away but then I started hearing a metal knocking kind of sound with every pedal stroke, originating from somewhere in the center of the bike. Harder the stroke, louder the noise. But no noise when riding out of the saddle. So, that made me think that it must be something to do with the seat post. Went home, googled, and more or less confirmed my suspicion. I think the seatpost rack and bag that I used over the weekend might have loosened things up. Weekend plan is to take out the seat post, clean it thoroughly, lube it and put it back. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

A small adventure on the way in today. For the past 5 years, my main commuter has been a cheap fixed gear. Because I wanted to be like the cool kids, I trained myself out of using my brakes, and exclusively using my legs to slow down and stop. I've always kept the front brake installed, but I never use it. This morning, I was glad to have it. When descending a long, fast hill, I started applying some back pressure to keep my speed in check, and suddenly, I heard, "TUNG!", and then I was pedalling backwards with no resistance! My first thought was that I broke my chain, but it was still there, hanging from the frame. I stopped with the brake, flipped the bike over, put the chain back on and looked for the reason it popped off, and finally noticed a broken spoke. It broke at the hub, and judging by a bend near the break point, it must have somehow jammed itself between the chain and cog, causing the chain to pop off. Anyway, I jammed the broken spoke between a couple of others (probably not the best idea, but I was in a hurry) and finished the ride. The trauma of the chain coming off somehow loosened the cog, because I felt it tighten on the next climb. I don't know how that's possible - the lock nut was definitely on good and tight.

I'm tempted to re-lace the wheel to a new hub, because I don't think the hub that came on the bike is that great. It feels rough when I spin it off the bike, though it seems okay once it's mounted. I've also heard that once one spoke goes, then the rest should be considered suspect, but I'm not an expert. Maybe I'm being influenced by the ad for 1390g wheelsets in the sidebar.

Wow, so many dry commutes in a row. I've been commuting every day for the past +3 weeks, but not by choice: my car's computer is messed up and apparently it's very rare.

essiemyra 05-25-18 05:21 AM

It was a nice uneventful commute in this am with the temp at 54 f degrees and mostly sunny skies. No rabbits with death wishes today. Yay for Friday!

Amitoj 05-25-18 06:11 AM

Ditto here. Pleasant 55 degrees commute.
One more day of bike commute this month and I will hit 700 miles for the month, which will be a new personal best for me! :ride: I might be turning into a mileage junkie?
Also, is it weird that I feel a little unwell when I am indoors, be it office or home, but feel perfectly fine as soon as I start pedaling on my bike? Happens with anyone else? This whole week has been like this for me.

We have some car trouble in common. I took yesterday off of the bike and worked from home. I drove with my wife to the mechanic to drop my car off. Sounds like my problem is the ABS pump. The mechanic will send it out for a rebuild. Otherwise a new one would be ~$800. I think he's going to have to keep the car over the weekend. No biggie.

Today's ride in was really nice. I rode in from home today. I could get used to 69F and no humidity. But I know the "oven weather" will be a comin' soon.
