Yeah! 34.2 mi pleasant commute today for me!
First time I commuted (trails ) on my Specialized Roubaix.

Back again for another nice Monday morning commute. The weather and ride was beautiful with the temp at 61 f degrees when I left the house.

zacster 07-09-18 05:29 AM

I'll be riding in today after doing a 75 mile ride on Saturday. This will be my recovery ride. I feel fine from the long ride but always take it easy to stretch out. I was traveling yesterday as was a good half on the NYC population it seemed.

Nate1991 07-09-18 06:50 AM

Rain last night brought in quite a bit of humidity, pretty sweaty ride in. Sounds like it's going to be the norm for a little while. Hoping the heat indexes will stay below 100

Amitoj 07-09-18 06:56 AM

The weather was quite pleasant this morning in the low 60s, as opposed to the morning temps last week.
Commute back home is still going to be in 90+ temps though

mgw4jc 07-09-18 06:56 AM

Friday afternoon was interesting. A front moved in and dropped the temp by about 20 degrees. At one point, the local map showed 91F for downtown Charlotte, and 72F only about 20 or 30 miles north of there. It stayed nice all weekend and this morning it was only 58F when I started my ride. My hands got a little chilly on one descent. I was loving it! It looks like nice mornings for most of this week, but still upper 80s to low 90s in the afternoon.

locolobo13 07-09-18 07:14 AM

Hey! It sprinkled on my way to work this morning. Not enough to get me wet tho.

pdlamb 07-09-18 07:23 AM

Big series of storms Saturday night cooled things off nicely (and the overcast yesterday didn't turn everything into a steam bath!). Starting your work week with a 68F commute? Priceless!

As clear and comfortable as it was, I had to take the wooded bonus mile. Not much to report; the birds have apparently nested, fledged, and left, and the only thing singing was the cicadas.

Consecutive work commute number 565:

I think today is the first day I'm officially "car light." My son got his driver's license last week. My wife was lobbying for us to buy him a car, which didn't make sense to me because I've commuted by bike every single day for 2.5 years now and my truck just sits in the garage all week. Why buy a 3rd vehicle when the 2nd one isn't currently being used? Her reasoning was that she didn't feel comfortable with my son driving a big truck, and she didn't want him to wreck her car. Thankfully, common sense prevailed and for the time being we have three drivers with only two vehicles.

My son's golf tournament season start this week. This morning he was meeting a partner to play a practice round before Wednesday's tournament. So by the time I came out of the bedroom he was already out the door and gone on his own. There was only one car left in the garage, which is the one my wife needs. So starting today I didn't have any option but to ride my bicycle to work.

Kind of weird feeling, but I'm handling it OK. My wife is not handling it well at all. In mom's mind he's still a little boy and she's having a real hard time coming to grips with the fact that he's growing up and becoming independent.

"Get off the road, a--h--le" the first I've heard that in about two years.

I take it as a sign that I need to take that route more often, to train the new drivers in the reality of commuting on public roads, so it won't have the effect that the young ignoramus probably expects.

Must be dumbass drivers day! Mine was a cop - narrow downtown 2-way street. As I'm coming down the street riding in the middle because the edges are a mess he turns onto the street coming the other way. Usually cops are really helpful but this guy was driving in the middle (because his road edge was messed up too) and he was not moving. Without thinking I said "*******" as he went by - good thing his window was up!

HardyWeinberg 07-09-18 09:31 AM

62F, gray. Just realized I might not have enough tea in the office to make it through the week...

noglider 07-09-18 09:37 AM

wphamilton, I'll get off the road as soon as I'm done with it. :)

My first ride from the new house. I took the longest direct route, downhill out of my neighborhood and then sticking to dirt path along the MUP. This makes it 3.6 miles and 25 minutes. It’s not as good as my old commute but it’s good enough.

zacster 07-09-18 05:24 PM

Great rides today. Cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. After my 3/4 century I felt great and was ready to conquer Mt. Manhattan Bridge, all 4% of it. My ride home was a PR at 41 minutes (I made all the lights.)

wern0122 07-09-18 08:04 PM

Zoom!

There were some lovely stretches of keeping up with traffic thanks to a fortuitous combination of slow drivers and wind at my back!

I had to ride in midtown Manhattan twice this evening. I feel like a warrior. Well, I made it home alive. I think if I video'd it, people might puke.

essiemyra 07-10-18 04:40 AM

Another nice uneventful commute to work today.

esmith2039 07-10-18 06:22 AM

Warming up already! Learned a valuable lesson today.. If you carry your water bottle in the panniers make sure you put your underwear on the other side. Looks like I'll be working from my desk for a while lol!

mgw4jc 07-10-18 06:23 AM

On a two lane road (one each direction) a wide bus passed me despite the oncoming car. A guy in a little two-door convertible was forced to get way over and make room for this guy passing. This road does not have much traffic and if people needing to pass me would just wait a couple of seconds for the oncoming folks to go by, they'd have a clear lane to more safely make the pass.

Nice and cool with the low 60s this morning. Very comfortable.

My son just got his permit. He has to have it a full year before getting his license and thus having any need for a car, but it's coming. We have been a 1 car family for about 4 years. It will be odd to me to have a second car if we get one then.

Amitoj 07-10-18 06:48 AM

Cool ride in to work today. The corn on the ball of my left foot is getting a bit troublesome, even with the over-the-counter corn removal strip and pad.

Nate1991 07-10-18 06:56 AM

Cooler ride in today, heat is going to climb back up this afternoon. Had a lady try to yell at me that it was my fault she almost hit me when she was going to roll through a stop and I was already in the crosswalk. So I gave her a nice yell back that it's a crosswalk and she should pay the f attention and gave her the bird. Civility runs out when you're a moron.

pdlamb 07-10-18 07:03 AM

I feel a little smug this morning. My wife picked up car tags, and I brought the tag for my car (the "spare" car) in to work on the bike.

The ride itself was very nice. I think I only hit one red light (out of some 17 possible). It started out as a recovery ride, but then it was so nice I almost had to push a bit. Weather was clear and calm, the air was cool and dry. I felt the need to respond to such a day by adding another mile or two.

So I did.

I think I was the first one down the MUP getting close to work, since I took out a couple of spider webs. Need more joggers to clear the leaf duff and spider webs off the path.

Heh, I'm in the same boat as you. My son bought a huge Ram van, because the price was right (used) and it runs great, if anything they're better protected in the bigger vehicle. My wife uses the car during the week also ... but it's not like we're going to suddenly decide that we've just gotta drive in to work one day.

The crazy thing is that it's cheaper for him to have his own vehicle, including the purchase price, than to have him listed as a primary driver on my insurance on the family car. Even though his van is still insured on my policy.
