But I couldn't keep the odor under control otherwise. One of the few drawbacks with cyclecommuting is going home stinky. Oh well. Its not like I have a date with a second girlfriend to ride to... :D

We are sorting out a new routine. I deliver kiddo to preschool in the morning, the nanny packs up the twin toddlers and picks him up in the afternoon. Her car can’t carry 3 kid seats. This means she needs my truck at 2. But I have a meeting at 8 or 8:30 every day. So either I take kiddo in the kid seat leaving at 6:45 or 7:15, or I take him in the truck and bring it home at lunch to trade it for the bike. I’m not sure I have it in me to do 4 consecutive days a week even if it’s straight to work. It helps that the new commute is shorter. The 8 M&W meeting will be going away in about 6 weeks but the 8:30 I don’t know. Autumn weather and darkness will put a crimp on this, too, assuming it lasts that long. |

* the overall #1 cause of motorcycle wrecks is self inflicted single bike, but it’s obviously underreported |
It's been a while for me, but yesterday and today were my first couple days bike commuting since April. That's when I completely fractured my right tibia and fibula--metal rod, screws, nerve damage, the whole nine yards. But it's been healing pretty well all things considered. In fact, yesterday was the first day I was able to get out of the saddle pain-free. Anyway, I started a new job as an elementary school teacher this week and have been riding to work again. :) It's a nice, short, albeit hilly (4 miles, 684' of climbing), commute, but it makes for a fun ride home.

A nice little tail wind helped on my way home last night. Averaged 17.1mph. It was good because I was needing to get home quickly to take some daughters to dance practice.
Typical 72F, 95% humidity ride in this morning. Forecast says tomorrow morning will be 10 or more degrees cooler. Looking forward to that. |
Last 3 days have been hot, humid, steady rain. Yesterday evening's last round of rain brought lower temps and this morning it was only 64. It's only supposed to reach 75 today - and the humidity is all but gone. A little taste of Fall? I'm not ready
|
Was not feeling it the first 2 days this week so I took the days off. Got back to it this morning with a nice brisk 50F ride in. Pretty drastic change from the humid and hot days before it. Kind of caught me off guard.
|
Last night's meeting was a bust, but it was a good ride out and back; 500' of climbing (vs. 100' on the straight shot home), a bit of headwind going there, and then the just-after-sunset ride home. (I had my winter lights blinking madly!)
This morning I paid for it. Overcast and cool, but I got up late and as a result I think I hit every. possible. red. light. coming in. How do the lights know when I'm running late and all gang up on me? |
Drove today. Drove Monday and Tuesday due to appointments, did not ride the last 2 weeks due to travel. Was going to ride today, but decided to take it off due to fire smoke, there is soot all over everything outside. I have toughed this out before (last year) but giving the lungs a break today.
|
A bit warmer than the last two days, so no gloves. Nice ride, but rode too hard due to a late start, and arrived a bit too sweaty and out of breath. Lots of runners and walkers (many with dogs) to dodge on the trails this morning.

Very lovely commute with a big break in the heat and humidity. I saw the forecast on Sunday predicting low 60s for Thursday morning. And it happened! I felt fast and full of energy. I averaged a little over 17mph which I don't remember doing but maybe once on the way to work. Getting lucky with the timing of the one stoplight I went through helped too.

It’s day 13 of bike commuting for me and it was a slow one heading into work. Between the wind or maybe it’s the Schwalbe Mondials that I installed last night I could really feel it this morning. At least the morning was flat tire free, so if the heavier tires helped that’s a price I’ll have to pay.

A perfect 54F Fall morning... a month early.

First day of school for my son (and every other public school student in town.) We are a two car family. He's driving himself to school for the first time, and my wife is taking the other car to work, so going forward I have no choice but to ride my bicycle to work. Technically I've been "car light" for about two months after my son got his driver's license, but this is the first day it really felt that way. I guess if I wasn't motivated enough on my own to ride in sub-zero temps this winter, this will force me.
Speaking of first day of school (and I was,) I assumed traffic would be heavier this morning. Usually I can tell as soon as summer starts because the traffic suddenly gets lighter, and the reverse happens in the fall. But traffic this morning seemed about the same as it was all summer. Curious. Had a tail wind. Hope it shift, because I don't feel like fighting it on the way home. |
Fall is coming! Lovely clear, cool, sunny morning, another great day for a bike ride. (And here I'm sitting at work.) Saw the first ironweed blooming in a patch of scrub -- that probably means the ragweed will be following soon, and I'll be spending a small fortune on antihistamines.
(Wonder if I should invest in whomever makes Zyrtec in my retirement account. I could squirrel some money away now, while I'm working, so when I retire I can still afford the darn stuff when I retire!) Stopped at the hardware store downtown to get a few keys made. I was a bit unlucky and drew The Kid to help me, instead of one of the grizzled old men. As a result, it took 2-3 times as long to get the keys made as I expected, which got me behind schedule. Still, it looks like the keys will work, which is why I wanted to go to the hardware store instead of XMart -- at least they train their Kids downtown! |
same here in chicago, blessedly cooler, drier air than the past several weeks.
64 with a dew point of 55. quite a welcome change after a couple weeks of mornings of 71 with a dew point of 70. |
70F this morning but very humid. The last couple weeks have been unseasonably cool (both highs and lows) so this morning felt like a sauna in comparison to what I'd gotten used to.
Traffic was a little heavier than yesterday, but still doesn't seem to be in full "back to school" mode. I hadn't ridden my fixed gear bike in months. I was audibly pondering whether or not to ride it and my son made the decision for me. Then he got in an air conditioned car and drove away. I pumped up the tires and took the fixed gear. And wound up sweating a lot. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...906eaa37b1.jpg |
Another wonderfully cool, clear, calm day. As I approached the first downtown traffic light, I thought to myself, "That's been green a while," but it held green for me. The next four lights I made on yellow, with a bit of a sprint involved, and from there hit all greens through the rest of "downtown." My luck held, I put my foot down just as the long light at the top of the rise turned green, so only a minimal delay there.
Bicycle commuters: we don't need an inflatable arch with a cute flag to know when we win! |

I stopped for a couple of pics on the way to work. Made me a bit late to work, but you know, smelling roses or something. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...96a54a300d.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a8bef049ac.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7d82dcc768.jpg |
I should collect the stories of weird things I see people on bikes (and related vehicles). Yesterday on the way to work, I saw something I see occasionally: a parent taking their kid to school/camp on a kick scooter. The parent stands on the back of the platform and the kid on the front. All four hands are on the handlebar. In this case, the kid was reading a book leaning on the handlebar, not looking ahead. I laughed out loud!
I listen to podcasts while commuting. Yesterday, I heard a story on The Moth podcast that was so moving that I cried out loud. It's a weird feeling to cry while cycling. The story teller said her grandfather was dying of cancer. Two days before she announced she was pregnant, Grandpapa said he wanted an assisted suicide. On hearing the news, he decided to stick it out so he could see his great grandbaby. Mama recovered from birth in the room below Grandpapa in the hospital. She broke the rule and brought Baby to Grandpapa who died the next day at home. So I cried and laughed out loud on the same ride. |
Nice ride in today, and it was the first day since spring when it was cooler outside than inside.
|
My first ride since about the beginning of August as I was on a bike tour for one week, rain and family camping trip(my son and his family, my daughter and hers, and a niece and her family) were the other factors in not riding. But I am so happy to be back on my bike again. I missed my old friend. I lost my front bike light on my camping trip(it makes a great flashlight) so I have to replace it this week as it was dark on my ride in( I was questioning my self on whether to ride without the light and I did).

70's but muggy! Got a new rack at a swap meet this weekend. 110lbs capacity.. plenty of wiggle room now!

I got hit by a car 3 weeks ago and cracked a rib. Today was my first day back. It felt great!
