A bit chilly today in the morning. Second time this year that i am commuting by bike 4 days in a week. Will see if I can stretch it to 5

Haha. I was stung by a bee last year. It first crashed into my face, then landed on my leg, where it met its end after valiantly plunging its stinger into my leg

We have several counters and supposedly they just get bicycles. I've tried to mess with them by walking through and true to their billing they don't recognize me unless I'm on my bike. Beats me how they work. I mostly pay attention to them in the winter. Typical numbers this time of year for the one I pass are 80-150 early morning, 350-400 afternoon. There have been winter days when I'm number 2 or 3! Almost cool this morning at 62F

Last ride for the Trek last night. A bit sad to lose it but it has been a bit of a
pain to keep rolling. Back on the Specialized next week. Not sure if I’ll get another 720 or a new bike.

Two days in a row! Yay me!

Darth Lefty 07-12-18 07:40 PM

Direct route both ways today. The new ride is quite short without any embellishments: 19 minutes downhill to work in the morning, and that’s despite plus size MTB tires and a bum ticker.

Amitoj 07-13-18 06:07 AM

When the week started, I had no intentions of making it 5 days of bike commuting week. Yet, here I am, on the 5th day of the week! It was a lovely ride into work this morning. I am glad I oiled my chain last evening. The bike is absolutely quiet now, except for the tire noise.
Yesterday on the way home, I wasn't feeling the energy to pedal, so I took every opportunity I got to slow down and chat with other riders :p

mgw4jc 07-13-18 06:49 AM

I'm getting tired of 90+ degree afternoon rides home. They seem to take it out of me much more than the morning rides.

Plenty warm and humid this morning. Assuming I ride all the way home today (instead of meeting my wife somewhere), I'll hit 130 miles for the week. That will be the first time I did that this year.

Tundra_Man 07-13-18 08:21 AM

We got more than 2" of rain during the night. Still falling when I rode to work, and predicted to keep raining the rest of the day through the weekend. The river was high, but not over the banks like a couple of weeks ago.

This is the wettest summer I can remember in quite a while. Usually by July the farmers are praying for rain. Not this year.

joeyduck 07-13-18 05:12 PM

No riding the last few weeks for me.

I went back to Vancouver for a surgical revision of my scars June 26th. They were hoping to beef up the area behind my knee with another graft. The plan was a muscle graft where they would move a hunk of muscle, tissue, and veins and splice it into the area behind my knee. They apparently spent four hours searching my calf to find a suitable vascular connection. They found nothing safe to make the connection so they went to plan B which was just move tissue and put in a normal graft.

So I spent a week in hospital and then just laid up at home hoping it is healing well. I'm in an immobilizer have to keep my knee from bending and damaging the new skin. I go back Monday for a follow up. I was there the preceding Monday to get staples removed (about 50, bringing my total to about 200) and he thought it was doing okay.

As well this week I signed up for a math class to get math as a teachable subject, since they didn't think I had enough math experience with a master of science in chemistry.

I also took a job for the year, but it's completely out of my wheelhouse I'll be teaching info tech, robotics, student support, and drama. The good thing is that it will push me to becoming a permanent employee.

I hope you all enjoy your summer

Monday back again for another week(my work week now consists of only 4 days) of riding. It was a pleasant uneventful ride even though there was some light fog this morning.

arsprod 07-16-18 07:15 AM

Like essiemyra said, "back for another week!" Pleasant low 70's this morning and 50/50 chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.

pdlamb 07-16-18 07:44 AM

Somewhat pleasant ride in. Either I finally drank enough water and ate enough salt to get refreshed, or the weather was just a little cooler and drier than normal. I noticed thin, high clouds as I left the house, which were rather darker and heavier by the time I got to work. A coworker exclaimed, "Have you looked at the radar!" It looks like the daily thunderstorms will arrive significantly earlier today, probably before lunch. I just hope they take 4-5 hours to clear out, keeping it overcast and cool for the ride home.

noglider 07-16-18 08:33 AM

I took Thursday and Friday off as vacation days, so I haven't commuted since Wednesday. It's humid, and the temperature is rising, so I rode as gently as I could.

A boy passed me and said "on your left" which is more polite than necessary, but I found it touching. He was unaccompanied. I'm glad to see unaccompanied kids commuting now. It's pretty new.

Amitoj 07-16-18 08:34 AM

Cold and humid ride in to work today. 11th consecutive ride to work. This streak will end tomorrow because of the thunderstorms forecast in the evening.
Didnt have the legs today somehow.

mgw4jc 07-16-18 11:40 AM

Monday Monday. Humid and warm this morning. I carried a feed bag to work today as I was out of snacks and some lunch items. It made by back a little sweatier than normal. Chances of showers this afternoon, but less than 50% so I probably won't see anything.

ptempel 07-16-18 12:11 PM

Was a good ride in from home today ~76F albeit a little more humid. I took it easy since I know that 90F with the same humidity will be a little more difficult going home. Still better than the possible T-storm tomorrow. So will have to park and ride for that and just get wet for the ride back to the car.

mgw4jc 07-17-18 07:02 AM

A good ride in this morning. Plenty warm and humid. We've been really dry lately and need some rain. It gets cloudy and overcast, but doesn't actually drop anything.

pdlamb 07-17-18 07:19 AM

mgw4jc, I feel like we could send you some rain. Actually had a good shower yesterday from about 9:30-mid-afternoon, the clouds kept the temperature down a bit so the ride home was 5 degrees cooler than I expected.

Nice ride this morning. I thought it was a medium overcast when I went out the door, and then I kept blinking for the first two miles trying to get some blurriness out of my eyes. About then, I realized there was a light fog -- I didn't have fuzzy filters on my glasses! Wish I could have extended this morning's commute a few miles to enjoy the relative cool. (How many people say something like that about driving their car to work?)

arsprod 07-17-18 07:35 AM

A bit of a break from the heat and humidity this morning and the high today is a mere 85F

noglider 07-17-18 08:02 AM

Last night, I had a rehearsal on the upper east side. I went through Central Park and was running late. I didn't even have time to say hello to a jogger I know. I just waved and yelled hi. My competitive juices got going in the park, and it felt like old days. I used to ride there a lot.

Going home late at night, I did something I never do, which is not to go home the straight way. I took Lexington Ave down and then took the East River bike route down to the Lower East Side. Spanish speakers have nicknamed it Loisaida, and in honor of that, the city has nicknamed Avenue C as Loisaida Avenue. Say it in a Spanish accent, and you'll understand it.

My commute was pleasant until the last 3/4 mile from work. A car with two young women hit a deer. The girls were out of the car on the side of road. One had a cellphone up next to her ear. I am assuming making a call to the police. The deer was down on the side of the road. I am not sure of the deer's status. My hope for the deer is he is not in any pain.

mgw4jc 07-18-18 06:31 AM

Scary situation essimyra. Reminds me that a deer crossed in front of me - about 3/4 mile from work - on Monday morning. But this was on the MUP and he bounded across safely. I slowed a little and made sure there weren't more following as there often is before continuing.

Slightly less humid today with a dew point of 68 instead of 70+ as it has been all week. A decent ride in.

rhm 07-18-18 06:52 AM

First rain in many weeks, yesterday, and we need it bad! But I got pretty drenched riding from my office to the train station yesterday afternoon, sat on the train wet for 100 minutes or so, and then got drenched again riding home. Ugh. Now I feel like I'm coming down with a cold. I wonder if my system is a bit depleted from the weekend's riding (I did a 1000 km brevet Thursday - Sunday).

Tundra_Man 07-18-18 07:15 AM

Been sick this week. I think it's just a bad cold. I missed Monday. I stayed home the first half of Tuesday, but by lunch was feeling a bit better so I decided I could sit in the office as well as I could sit at home.

Last night my ears completely clogged up, so I can't hear anything. The ride to work this morning was eerily quiet.

Nate1991 07-18-18 08:02 AM

Pretty nice weather recently. Makes for enjoyable rides. Missed yesterday due to appointments, bummed about it since it was a gorgeous day morning and afternoon. Tomorrow they are talking heavy rain/storms so probably going to skip that. Today was first ride with the new helmet, didn't have one before mainly because lazy and didn't pick one up. Bought a Bell Stratus for cheap through a friends discount, pretty lightweight and comfortable can hardly feel I'm wearing it.
