32 degrees.. layered just right! I was commenting the other day that my bike was initiated yet since I haven't had a flat. In impressive fashion I got a flat front and back.. neither one went flat right away. The back tire went pst..pst.. pst ever revolution. Whatever I hit was stationary. Of course didn't get the front patch right and was down 20lbs this morning. Got the wise idea to swap in my old rim and tire.. bingo! Good for a couple days.

A nice, cool morning today at about 55F. Sticking with shorts and short sleeve shirts as long as the afternoons are so much warmer. High of 80 today.
I left at about 6am and went to the gym for a bit on the way to work. Middle of October already seems crazy, especially when it was so warm through all of September. Seems like summer is just ending.

50F, wet and windy. It wasn't really raining, wasn't really drizzling, wasn't really misting, it was just wet... it was weird

Winter came early this year. It snowed last Thursday and Friday, but not enough to stick. Then I woke up yesterday morning to find 4" of wet heavy snow on the ground. It's been so wet leading up to this that most of the leaves haven't even changed color yet, and the heavy snow was pulling them off the trees. So on top of the snow is a big layer of green leaves.

It didn't get much above freezing yesterday, so this morning there was still quite a bit of snow on the ground. I have parts on order for my winter bike, so it's not yet ready to roll quite yet (who would have guessed I would have needed it in the first half of October?) So I just took my hybrid and kept my eye to the ground for potential icy spots. There were a couple of bridges that were pretty treacherous with icy ruts, but most other ice patches were small enough that I could just ride around them.

26F this morning with a 10 mph headwind. My winter speed returned where it felt like I was working hard to hit 12mph. Most of the commute I was closer to 10-11 mph.

Mid to upper 60s here. It started out clear, but high clouds covered the sun by the time I got in. The cooler weather is ever so welcome! It encouraged me to push considerably harder than the recovery pace I'd planned.

35F, sunny, took a short route today, 6 miles vs the typical 7+ or ideally 12+ Also, wore tights, 2 shirts, full-finger gloves, no coat though; expect to just wear short-sleeve shirt and shorts home w/ fingerless gloves

That wasn't even the first snowfall of the year, and since then, it's been cold and wet (and snowy, sometimes) most days. I'm also the king of excuses, so I've been driving.

Today I ran out of excuses - 8C/46F under mostly sunny skies. It was my first ride to work since Sep 11. Hills were a challenge.

I rode a particularly brutal 600 km brevet over the weekend, getting home at about midnight, sore all over. So when my alarm went off at 4:15 AM I was not thrilled about the idea of going to work, let alone getting back on the bike to ride to the station, and on top of that it was raining. Knowing I'm always slow on these morning after commutes, I tried to stay ahead of schedule... but still had to pedal a lot faster than I would have liked. Caught my train with about 30 seconds to spare.

Fortunately it was an uneventful commute, the traffic lights were in my favor, and the rain was very light.

Alas when I got to NYC there were no CitiBikes to be found, and the rain had picked up. Had to walk a mile in the rain. I might have enjoyed that on another day, but this morning it was unwelcome.

Dang, that sounds harsh. I've never done any extreme long distance riding, but I peruse the Long Distance sub-forum every now and then and many riders over there hold the opinion that the 600k's are a particular blend of brutal.

I had a 15 degree morning commute. Was fun, and even saw another rider early on. Was dry and not icy, so that helped a ton. I layered up 2 socks and even wore boots, but the feet were still cold. I need to research some footwarmers or something. Ride home is going to be in the low 40s.

I had to bring the Box o' crap to the post office before work, and it's big and heavy. I've done it on my bike but it's a bit unsafe. I realized Citi Bike is a better way. It ended up fitting in the front basket snugly and securely. After the post office, the closest Citi Bike station was full, which was actually a lucky thing, because that one is not near a subway, and the next one is. The rain was light and gentle, and I could have ridden, but the thought of riding Citi Bike for over six miles wasn't appealing, so I just took the subway. I took Citi Bike again at the end of the subway ride because it saves a minute or two compared with walking.

Lovely commute up the ridge line of the East Bay hills with a view of the sunrise over the SF bay, in shorts and a t-shirt. Living the dream.

It was a pleasant yet uneventful commute this am with the temp at 48 f degrees when I left the house.

Geez - a bunch of wet and cold commutes across the northern part of the country yesterday. Hard to believe the winter conditions and gear are already happening. It was a comfortable 65F this Tuesday morning, but looking at some 40s coming up the next couple of mornings.

1st real cold ride ever for me. It was about 32F and a pretty enjoyable experience. Hands were freezing due to my gloves not being up to par, and my shirt was a sweaty mess due to the thin down jacket not having much breathability. Other than that, it was fun! Looking forward to fine tuning my layers and riding through the winter.

37°F this morning with a light wind. 90% of the snow from Sunday is gone now. Dark when I left the house, but by the time I made it to work the sun was coming up and it looks like it will turn into a nice day.

As I left the house I remembered that today was our company chili feed and I had signed up to bring corn chips. I didn't have any at the house, so I was going to have to stop on the way to work. My two best grocery options were to ride a mile in the opposite direction and then backtrack, but have a mostly calm commute, or ride about an extra mile off my path but kind of in the same direction, but then have to ride quite a bit of really busy fast moving streets. I decided to go with the calmer route even though it was longer.

Then, about halfway to work I was coming down the MUP when I saw flashing lights up ahead. At first I thought it was a park department vehicle, but as I got closer I realized it was police cars. I stopped and an officer came out and greeted me. He told me there was a bad accident (by this time I could see the wreckage) and that they had the trail closed. He was friendly, so I asked him if it was possible to dismount and walk down the path as long as I make sure to stay away from everyone. He apologized and said that he couldn't let me do that. I didn't really expect him to, but I figured it didn't hurt to ask. We chatted again for a few seconds and then I turned around and backtracked again. So I wound up having to ride an extremely busy street anyway.

From what I can gather, a car was going down the interstate and somehow flew off, down the embankment, through a fence, across the MUP and into the river. A toddler was flung from the car into the river and they had rescued her. When I arrived they were still doing a water search as they didn't know how many people were in the vehicle, and apparently the driver wasn't able to tell them. Didn't look like a good situation. Haven't heard yet if there were any casualties.

Mid 50s this morning before dawn. The clouds had a small hole that let me watch the sun coming over the ridge as I was southbound, then they swallowed the sun back up. Nothing nearby on weather radar -- what's that droplet on my glasses? And the one, no two, that followed??

I also got a taste of winter this morning, 34F. Had to dig into the winter gear. First cold ride of the season always seems like such a strain, and then second one is nothing

Yeah winter is coming, as they say. Today was the first day since the last cold weather that I wore long pants on my commute and also a t-shirt under my dress shirt. It was 47F when I left. I wore my summer gloves which were barely adequate. I had no idea it would be insanely windy. I started out without my jacket figuring I would make enough heat from pedaling, but that didn't work, so I stopped and took my jacket out of my bag. Most of the way the wind was going the other way, so I had to work hard. But I was comfortable, and I was glad to be back on my own bike after not riding it for a few days. I hope the wind direction doesn't change at midday!

Commute was brisk to say the least this morning - 34! Had light gloves and some wollies on, along with light jacket and my pants. Hands were really cold the first 2 miles, but warmed up after that. I was sweating by the time I got to work. Definitely a slow ride, but better than the bus!

It was windy here too. I was wondering if I needed to dress for the windchill more than the temperature today.

yesterday it was 53F and dark and this morning was 60F and dark. Cloudy mornings sure make for dark rides in. guessed right on both days for the long sleeve jersey Monday and just a vest this morning.

have to drive tomorrow and hope to ride Thursday and Friday. Supposed to be colder later in the week. aka more like middle of October. (FALL)

This weekend I finally got around to replacing the side covers on my DIY chain case, using vinyl this time instead of corrugated plastic. By "got around to" I really mean "had no choice" because when I rode through some flood waters Thursday - from remnants of the hurricane - it was deep enough to catch the sides and rip it off the case. Guess I was going a little too fast also ... but it was pretty beat up anyway. I think the vinyl looks better and it's for sure quieter so I'm pleased with it. First test ride today since I telecommuted yesterday, and so far it's held up.

They released an update on the crash scene I encountered this morning. A woman and her 6 month old son were in the vehicle. Both survived and are in serious but stable condition.
