Finally!

At long last the morning temps were high enough for me to take my first commute for the 2018 season. Funny how one must re-orient oneself to all the details of packing, loading, locking...I only forgot three things today! Looking forward to a fun and safe season.

Funny you said that about getting back into the routine. I missed my first opportunity of the season to commute to work on Long Island today, but I did come home and start preparing my bike (as if this weather is actually going to stick around for more than a couple of days). I'm amazed at how baffled I was when trying to come up with a mental checklist of everything I need.

Anyway, Saturday 4/14 is supposed to be another good day, so I hope to get on the bike and blow some crust out of my arteries before beginning the daily commute ONE of these days in April.

Have a safe season. If you are as disgusted as I am with the world right now, I hope the joy of commuting brings you and I a little bit of peace.

I commuted one day in February, because it was unseasonably warm, and so that I could say "I did it."

Did the same in March.

Twice this week, and one day was colder than many of the days that I passed on earlier this year. It's more of a motivational issue, shaking off those winter blues that affect me more these past few years.

Exactly the reason I started bike commuting. This year, I am starting earlier than last, and last year I started earlier than the year before.

Trying a few new things; got a hitch-mount bike rack, rather than throwing the bike into the trunk (multi-modal commute, you know), experimenting with wax rather than oil (too many pant stains), helmet-mounted rear light.

Looking for that magical set of clothing, gear, and bike that will overcome all that internal resistance. (Ha!)

Yup. Where on LI, Tom? I lived there for 25+ years before I escaped to Manhattan, although the riding is beautful. Port Washington, Syosset, Plainview.

I live in Syosset, but I rarely ride here. I'm not a big fan of the hilly North Shore/Gold Coast rides that lots of other people like. I tend to head out east a lot, to Port Jeff, Greenport, Sag Harbor, etc. Locally, I will do the new and extended Bethpage and Jones Beach Bikeways, and hyper-locally, I commute 2-3 miles to work every day during the fair weather season.

I took the bike out for a stretch today and didn't have a stroke, so it looks like I will get through another year. Broke a spoke, though. Yeah, a rear one!

I like the Gold Coast, but also other locales. Last ride I did out that way was to Caumsett. I wanted to go to Target Rock but it was too hot that day. I moved just after they improved the greenway trails and that was nice. My Plainview house faced part of the wooded trails off Washington Ave.
