the cateye power opticube (used it)
the planet bike one (haven't used it, the optics aren't supposed to be as good as the cateye though)
the cycgolite 1watt LED system with a recharable NiMh (using it now, it's great)

longer battery life, no worry about blowing out bulbs, longer bulb life, less expensive, same amount of light, but better quality light

Hahaha.. no...
Here are some test pics, from dimmest to brightest:
Cateye EL500
AA powered 5watt halogen flashlight
11watt light & motion custom halogen
16watt light & motion custom halogen

Good buy, you can't go wrong with l&m, they really stand behind their products. Plus it uses standard bulbs so you can feel free to pop like a 6 watt bulb if you want longer life or a 20 watt if you want less life and more brightness.

The L&M Solo manual explicitly mentions that you should not keep the light turned on for extended periods when it is stationary. I think I have read feedback from buyers on how the light switch melted when they kept their light on when they were not on a bike.

For a commuter, that would mean leaving the light on while you have dinner. Then leaving it charging overnight. In the morning you are charged and ready to go.

slvoid,

What is the 16W L&M custom halogen below? My 13W Solo is nowhere near as bright as the last image you have there. Is it a higher wattage bulb on a "lesser" L&M light?

Sorry, when I said custom halogen, I meant the custom bulb and reflectors that l&m uses.
Your solo should have the same, mine's a l&m dual.
It has an 11 watt flood and a 16 watt spot beam.
I flipped the reflectors so for commuting, I have a 16 watt flood and an 11 watt spot (which is what you're looking at).

That's true, I think the solo has the switch on the lamp body.
My dual has a remote switch for the high beam and a separate switch on the mounting portion of the light for the low beam. So even though the lamp housings can overheat, it won't melt any electronics inside.

Thanks. Before you mentioned it, I did not know that they had a dual model.

Bikes: 2 many

Another vote in favor of the L&M light.

My first night commute, the new light worked very well. It completely drowned out the Bell Halogen light I was previously using. The battery is also much lighter than the Night Hawk.
