Blinkie selection.............

I was looking for a Cat Eye TC-LD1000 blinkie locally yet no one seems to carry them here.

My next option appears to be the Cat Eye TC-LD600 or a Blackburn Mars 3 or Mars 2. I would appreciate any feedback or comparisons of the above lights for brightness and or reliability.

I'd just order one from performance. Don't compromise on your safety, the 1000 is the best clip on blinker out there.

YES! It roxors.

If your LBS doesn't know enough to keep the best stuff in stock, screw'em! They don't deserve your money!
Order from performance and spring for the shipping upgrade. or join the team performance and get free shipping upgrades with every order. Can't beat that with a log.

Order one. I just got mine last week, and I wouldn't take anything less now.

I have an amber xenon strobe as well, which still fries the LD1000, but the LD1000 is what you want as far as LEDs in the back.

Don't compromise, get one. If your LBS won't order one for you, just order it yourself.

Performance, Nashbar, Harris Cyclery, and many other on line places have the Cateye
TL-LD 1000. Just google it.

I like the TL-LD1000 and use it in conjunction with the TL-LD500 as an active and passive (reflector) backup. By state law in Florida a cyclist is required to have both a light and reflector when operating between sunset and sunrise. This arrangement covers me for that.

Like CommuterRun, I also use/like the TL-LD500 because of the passive reflector feature. I am picking up a 1000 tommorow to use starting next week. I really like the side view blink capability. Hey all, how big of an a** will I be if I mount the 1000 up front? After a close call about 6:30 this evening, I am seriously considering it.

The Cateye TL LD1000 is the only way to go. Tons of online retailers have them, as well as Ebay. The thing is INCREDIBLY bright and has a multitude of settings.

Mounting the 1000 up front is kind of like using a flash light on your car to see ahead. It's simply not powerful enough for a front light. A $20 cateye el200 blinker can easily surpass the LD1000 in terms of brightness and noticeability.

Femine hygene? Maybe that's what you see, but all I can see is Chevy Chase singing Moon River.

The general consensus has convinced me to go with the Cat Eye TC-LD1000. I guess I will pick up a rack, rear trunk, and a good U-lock while I am at it and combine shipping. This should pretty much complete my commuter\rain\ errand bike.
It amazes me how quickly setting a bike up adds up. I originally only paid $25 dollars for this bike (a Miyata Quickcross) at a yardsale. So far I have changed out the seatpost, stem, tire\tubes, added fenders, pump, dug out my halegon light and replaced battery & charger. I also upgraded the brakes\pedals with parts I had.

In my own defense, I have a Nighthawk emitter and a helmet mounted cateye el120 and apparently wasn't visible enough for the guy hauling landscaping equipment. He pulled out from a crossroad almost on top of me. I had to swerve into the oncomming lane to avoid being hit. Sorry for going off topic.

I know how you feel. Some drivers will seem to look you right in the eyes, and then drive right into you anyway. Even on a motorcycle with high beams on. Still, be as visible as you can for the ones that notice the lights.

Last night, I wrecked my NR superbright taillight and need a new light pronto. For those of you who are familiar with both the NR taillight and the TC-LD1000, how do they compare?

There is a thread by mechBgon that has a video comparison of the two in the dark. It might be something like "Comparison between Nightrider tailight and Cateye TL-LD 1000" or something close to that.

slvoid also has both.

The Nightrider has a wider angle of high visiblity from the back.

The Cateye is less money. It may be a little brighter directly from directly behind. But it loses a lot more when viewed off axis (say 45 degrees off of straight behind.)

The Nightrider may be better when you are surrounded by heavy traffic and you need maximum visibility from all angles. If your riding on rural roads and the cars can see you a long way off the Cateye is good too.

I wound up buying both. The NR wasn't in stock and I didn't want to ride a few days with no rear light so I bought the other as a backup. I must say I'm impressed. Had I seen this a few years back, I never would have even thought to look at the NR.

However, I ordered the NR anyway and I plan to run both so I always have a backup. Lights are no place to economize.

To the OP -- the Blackburn Mars 2.0 was also in my LBS. It's a decent light and is much better than most small blinkies.

No comparison.
Think of the LD1000 as an AR15, pretty powerful, if you aim it correctly, otherwise it's spray and pray. And think of the NR as an 8-guage. In terms of sheer long range size and visibility, you can't compare 6-LED's with a cluster of 19 of them.
On blink mode, the LD1000 still looks like a blinker, the NR looks like the tail light on a formula one car.

Although there is one blinker that comes close though. If you can get your hands on it. The old specialized blinker. It uses 2 3V lithium coin cells and instead of red, has this fire orange glow to it. The LED's focused and dispersed through a lens that gives it almost the same visibility as the NR with only 2 LED's.

On top of that, the specialized and NR blinkers both blink at 4Hz, which is pretty damn fast.

I combine my LD 1000 with a Xenon strobe light with a clear lens. I have had 747's try and land on me.
