27 inch tires..need a recomendation
My usual commuter is a fixie, converted from an old steel road frame that takes old school 27 inch wheels. I'm due for a tire change soon. I need 27x1-1/8 tires. Anything wider won't fit under my skinny Planet Bike road fenders. I like the look and feel of the 27x1-1/8 Forte/Performance GT2k tires that I am currently running, but they are cheap and wear out fast. There are so many tires out there..its difficult to compile a list of tires made in the size I need. Can anybody recomend a tire that comes in the right size?

I haven't actually used them yet, but I just got a pair of tires from Nashbar in 1 & 1/4 width that seem like they'll be ok. They are available in 1 & 1/8 as well.
The Continental Ultra Sport:

But, perhaps I am just being optimistic based on good reviews for higher end Continentals...., but they do seem like pretty nice tires, as much as can be told without mounting and riding anyway.
There is also a cheaper Sport 1000 that costs about 1/2 as much, so even if they wear quickly they are inexpensive to replace. I decided to splurge, otherwise, those would actually be the tires I would try. Maybe when I lose weight and drop down to 1 & 1/8

Specialized makes an Armadillo in 27X1 1/4. They make them a bit big, though. Cheaper tires might not last as long as expensive ones. I've heard that the ones you're using aren't bad, even though they wear out quickly for you.

The Continentals are really nice and the Nashbar tires mention above are good. The Walmart tires work too. I have tried all of them.
You will notice a difference between tires. You mentioned that your tires tend to wear fast. As a general rule, the better road grip you have, the faster the tire wears. It is still a compromise.

Its not that the rubber is wearing off too fast that worries me about the GT2k tires ...several small bulges are developing around the small cuts. Otherwise, i would say that they are great tires for the dough. I'm using Specialized Armadillos on my other rig, and these tires are great...no flats, no bulges for thousands of miles. Unfortunately they don't come in 27 x 1-1/8.

I'm running Panaracer Pasela tires, 27x1-1/8 on my commuter. They fit fine under the Zefal fenders. The clips that attach the fenders to the fender stays would likely interfere with anything bigger. I remember paying less than $20 each at a LBS. Nashbar sells 'em, so does aebike. The Paselas seem to be long wearing. Probably over a 1000 miles so far so far, and I have no plans on replacing them anytime soon. In fact, I can still see the seam from the mold down the centerline of the front tire. Walter.

+1 on the Paselas if you don't mind a skinwall tire... (I think they look great on older bikes)
