Its Friday afternoon and I don't see any tornados in the area. It looks like I'm 5 miles away from my first ever 5 straight day round trip commuting week.

For a while now, I have been driving on Mondays and Wednesdays because I play tennis on those days. With my newly aquired grocery pannier, I'm now able to bring my tennis gear to work with me. Barring lightning, tornados or errands requiring the use of a truck, I'm hoping to make every week a solid commuting week this summer.

Congratulations! Every solid week you do makes the next one easier. I rarely even think about driving anymore. Keep up the good work!

With the latest story on CNN about the price of oil...I think it's high time I make a full week too. My real goal is never to take two cars. If I can't commute, I have to carpool with the wife...who will never commute full time anyway.

The other night I rode home, locked my bike outside, ran in, grabbed a couple of cloth grocery bags, hopped back on the bike, rode to the supermarket and on my return my neighbor saw me with the two big bags of groceries and said, "Did you just come from the market on your bike?" Me, "Yeah.?" the neighbor then points to my car that never goes anywhere (esp. now that my wife is back to bike commuting) and says, "why didn't you take the car?'' I realized at that moment it just wouldn't ever have occurred to me. Oddly enough it would have felt like too much of a hassle to deal with the car. My neighbor, who works at the YMCA that is less than a 3 minute walk from her house, drives to work.

It's wonderful when it's so ingrained in your life. Some people would welcome the chance to drive and here you are celebrating a week without it.

The more full weeks you do, the easier it gets to resist the temptation to drive. I very rarely drive anymore - perhaps once every 5 or 6 weeks, and then only when I need to transport something huge, or because I need to pick up someone at the train station, or bring my kid to the doctor, or some other unbikeable errand. Driving to work for anyother reason feels like a total sin.

This week was a full week for me. I always feel good on Friday afternoon, after a full week. Last week was only 4 days, because I had to pick up some heavy items from work on Wednesday.
