The NEED to ride and lost productivity
Well, have a question for you all. I feel like I lose a lot of productivity during the day because I just want to be out on my bike! I leave around 6 in the morning, and am at work just short of 7. Get cleaned up, breakfast, etc and am working by 8. About 11 I get a little ansy, and have to log onto the Bike Forums and read around. It gives me my "cycling fix" and I am good to go for another hour or so. Then I find myself staring out the window, waiting to hit the road and head out on the bike. Pretty much for the rest of the day I am waiting to hit the trail. In the winter it is not as bad, cold nasty winds etc but the Spring is BRUTAL!!! I probably spend 2-3 hours looking to go home between my 7 AM to 6PM work day. Just my rant, curious if anyone else loses focus during the day wanting to get out and ride.

It's extremely difficult for me to stay focused this time of year as well. I work at a coffee shop and (regrettably) we have a drive-thru so everytime I open that window to serve another middle-aged white housewife her triple skinny tall easy flavor white mocha, I get a taste of the outside air at 7 in the morning. Usually all I can do is step outside and enjoy it as best as I can. It's great when I finally get out after my shift is over because all that pent-up energy from all day makes for a fantastically powerful ride. So it has its ups and downs....

I also leave my house at 6 to arrive at work at 7, but I shower and eat at home and pack a snack and lunch, so I just change in the washroom at work. I know most people probably immediately think I smell for the whole day, but I perspire very little and a Thai deodorant stone seems to keep all the BO away. As far as productivity goes, I actually feel less productive when I don't ride. I've really become accustomed to that "thinking time" before and after work every day and I feel, for lack of a better word, ******** when I don't get that. Riding to and from work helps me maintain focus throughout the day and if I feel like I need an extra fix, I head out for a quic ride or a run at noon (and I do shower after that!). Maybe part of the issue is your job? Maybe you need to look for something more challenging, something that will help you stay less distracted?

I'd be more worried about lost of productivity due to bikeforums...

ridin' my bike to work is a two-edged sword for me in that i walk past my ride all the time and that makes the day go by slower cause i can't wait to ride (the long way) home. but i ride everyday to work anyway.

Take your lack of concentration as a sign that you need a new job or profession. I have to love what I am doing to stay focused. Having said that, I have not loved what I have been doing for a very long time. Hence I, like you, cannot stay focused. I try the work sprint approach--->try like hell for as long as I can, then coast. If I can sprint again, fine. However, I know I have to find something new. I can't do this forever.

Regarding BF, I'm wonderfull at multi tasking. At least that is my excuse
I work an early shift and leave from 2:30-3:00 pm. After lunch my productivity is fairly horrible and it goes downhill. That has always been that way but is now worse since I bike to work.
Days that are very annoying or tiring result in me becoming more and more ancy as the day wears on. Heck, I literally get excited when it is time to leave.

I work near a window. I get distracted from about 10am-3pm, when the sun is shining and you can see the empty streets and everything 's bright and happy. But in the afternoon it gets depressing and by the end of my day, when it's dark and the tail-end of rush-hour traffic is clogging the streets, I don't feel as enthusiastic about biking.
I got in to work a little late today, and it was nice to have a little more sun, fewer cars. It's funny the rut you can get into, and how you can break it by just shifting your schedule by 30 minutes. It did, however, make me want to blow past work entirely and just keep riding ...

Isn't asking this question on bikeforums in the middle of a workday (a friday no less) like going into a bar at mid-day and asking people if alcohol affects their productivity?

I work mostly second shift. Gotta be there at 2:00 pm so thats my time to experiment with different routes (bike path, through downtown, etc.). I get off at 10:30 pm when its dark and I'm tired so I take the bus home. Thats been my routine for the past several months.

My boss is never in the office. She does not care when I show up or leave provided that I get my work done.
I can also work from home when I please.
When my new position comes through my next boss will be in wisconsin. he he
Oh, my boss is also a massage therapist. Thus I get free massages.

My riding makes me 4x as productive as most the people I work
with. When I arrive @ 5:45 I am happy, aware and ready to go...
I am only 2x as productive as most people when my productivity
drops, so no big deal
