yeah, thats why i would just strick to drops...

i think everyone riding with flat bars never got the dropbars up high enough for them to be comfy. IMHO, on a roadbike drops are really the best thing you can have.

Okay, today I bought a 7400FX, 2005 model so at a great deal. (I tried to buy the 7200fx on craigslist, but I got beat out!). Rode it home today and I have to say it seemed pretty great! I need to change the saddle, though... Thanks so much for all of your advice. If not for it, I think I would probably be riding much more of a comfort bike tomorrow, slugging up those hills! The fx seems like a perfect compromise--a hybrid, but more on the road bike side. Feels pretty quick to me! (But watch, if you're right, I'll be back here asking for advice on road bikes in three months!)

Congrats mom! you can probably trade-in the stock saddle for something more your style for an upgrade charge rather than pay full price. Have fun!

i really think you should look into something along the lines of a cyclocross/touring bike. looks like a roadie but set up a bit more comfortably... and with skinny tires it will be just about as fast. but then for commuting it will fit wider tires and fenders.
+1

I love my old vintage tourers. I also love all the money they save me.
