I wonder, how cold can it get before you need another jacket? What's the temperature range for the Showers Pass Elite, or similar jackets... it stays in the 20's to 40's here in the winter, and I wouldn't be able to justify a $179 jacket if I couldn't use it all winter... maybe with a wool sweater underneath it'd be alright, or in fact maybe a wool sweater would be too much if it's 25 degrees (F) out.. I don't see a temp range on their site. Sounds like a damn good commuter jacket though.

You could just layer a fleece and wicking layer underneath. The jacket will serve its role as a wind/water barrier while you could use something else to insulate.

Exactly...I used the Showers Pass Elite gear on commute all last fall and winter and that's what I do. You just take it into account when you add that as your top layer, and adjust your dress accordingly. I'm thinking that I wear it and a jersey on anything down to about 50, go to a long sleeve jersey down to about 40, then add a beefier long sleeve jersey and layers as necessary below that. The great thing about it as a top layer in colder weather is the way that you can vent it. That really helps to stay warm without building up enough heat to sweat too much. That alone had me wearing the Elite Jacket on plenty of non-rain days, which suprised me.

I'm wondering about smartwool shirts and long johns/tights. Anybody have any insight on their lightest weight stuff?
