I've got 2 headlights, 2 blinkie tail lights, reflectors and a scratched Pink Floyd CD in the pocket of my gear bag that really catches the headlights behind me. When traffic approaches from the rear, I make myself big and visable, weave (in my lane) and 99 out 100 cars move all the way to the left lane, leaving the center clear and me smiling. Except for that $*#% CocaCola delivery truck, who every @#$% morning hugs the right lane and honks his horn at me. I realize he has to turn right at every C-Store on the road, but is his schedule and life so lousy that he's got to mess with my sole serene time of the day? It's been suggested I hold the center of my lane and MAKE him so around, but I don't want to be roadkill to prove a point. I've seen him loading up his colored toxic sugar water at 7-11, but figure if I confront him than tomorrows ride would be even more dangerous. There, I've vented, all better.
Try calling the delivery truck company to see if they have any policy regarding respect to other traffic or even cyclist related policy. maybe you can get his boss to breath down his neck and make him stop pestering you so much. If they don't do anything, try suggesting that you could call the local police about disturbing the peace or something similar on him. You never know, you might be able to get him switched with somebody else (hopefully nicer) or have him educated by his boss about respect to others on the road.

Imagine that such would come in quite handy in case of a court case too... nothing like having a digital eye witness.

Thanks for the link!

BS. The motorist will be upset whatever you do. You're a cyclist, they have no appreciation for what that's like, and they resent you clogging their space. If the MUP weren't there she'd be just as pissed at his being on the road.

Why do you assume someone rides like this to purposedly annoy motorists, and in some quest to prove a point?

As far as I'm concerned I'm happy with my views on what's acceptable and I don't go out of my way to try and prove it to JAMs, and I certainly don't do anything to antagonise them. But I'm not going to accomodate their ignorance or their bad attitudes. I just do what I think is right, period.

Society deems us unworthy, why play by their rules? A lot of MUPs are awful to ride on, and they betray a lack of willingness to truly respect bicycles as a form of transport. Sod the bastards.

Be glad you didn't get something thrown at you. Folks seem to be moving from yelling "get on the sidewalk" to assault by projectile.

I think you may have misunderstood her. She probably didn't say "get your a$$ on the sidewalk." She probably said "please stuff my a$$ with your (ock".

She was good looking so that would not have been a bad thing if I wasn't married I may have taken her up on that offer.

Ok for the record regarding the MUP in question that parallels Singing Hills Blvd. It is a very nice MUP, I'm guessing 8' wide, nice smooth transition across intersections, no major cracks, dips, holes, or other damage, etc. It is also hardly used, at least on week days. I don't know about week ends because I hardly ever come down to this part of Sioux City on Sat. or Sun.

So I can not nor have I used the excuse of it is heavy with other trail traffic or is such poor shape as an excuse to not ride on it.

So how/where did you dislocate your shoulder...MUP, road, or non-bike related?

For a while i'm going to be a cager as well. But having been a commuter i'm well aware of bikers around me. Just this morning i spotted a biker crossing the road in the bike MUP while i was about to do a right turn and stopped to let the biker go across. Another cager behind me started honking at me... I guess if he was in my position he would've went for it and possibly cut off the biker.

Non bike related. It was at home. The contractor left some shingles by the garage and my exterrior lights were off (the motion sensor is broken) so I tripped over the pile of shingles and I landed with my left arm stinking forward. I guess the impact dislocated the shoulder. I'm not sure, it happened so quickly and totally by surprise.

When OP says he was in the right half of the right lane, does that mean 3-4 feet from the sidewalk?
I ride 2 feet from the edge to avoid grates and give some swerve room, but I can appreciate how cagers would consider it discourteous if I took 4 feet. 2 feet still gives 2 feet clearance to pass for most cars going to the edge of the lane.

Posting because I got my first "get off of the [expletive] road" earlier today when riding on a light-moderate traffic 35 mph road with one lane each way. There's no real shoulder in places, so I was in the middle of the lane, but not such that the guy couldn't pull past with ease as he yelled at me. I was more shocked and amused than offended, though I sort of wish I could've shared a few friendly words with him about how I need to be visible and not get run off the road and all that.

I try to only take 2 feet, but if the road/shoulder is bad, or if there are parked cars, I'll take the middle of the lane.

ahh, isn't great to come onto a forum where people that share a common interest can help each other develop a false sense of superiority by having little derogatory insider terms like cager and jam to throw around describing the outsiders that we treat as the enemy.

Junior you haven't been here long enough to make a comment like that. Come back & say such things when you've grown to a full fledged forum member & have quite a few more threads & responses under your belt.

Hey, I got my first "get on the sidewalk" just last week. I live in Lanai City, Hawaii, a town of about 2000 people where the main road through the 'city' has a speed limit of 25 mph. No sidewalks to speak of, usually very little traffic and most people give a friendly wave and a wide berth to cyclists. About 10 at night riding the 3/4 mile home from a friends house, red blinky on the back and a small headlight on front, no traffic in sight, I heard a truck come up behind me and sit on my tail for about 300 yards, as I turned right into my street I heard the shout from the truck. Had a quick look but did not recognise the truck, my first thought being it was someone who knew me, only thing I did was to shout "get stuffed", not very original I know.
Only things I've had shouted at me before was "Allez,Allez" in France and "you've got a nice ass" in South Africa.

Typical response I see everywhere I've gone on the web since 1993. It's the same cause as well: fear! Fear of being pwned by a noob.

Wow, you'd think people in such close quarters wouldn't risk it. Isn't everybody there first cousins?

Personally, i don't understand why cyclists who ***** about not having bicycle friendly roads don't use the paths when they are provided for the safety of the cyclist.

That being said: I did get the "ride on the sidewalk" myself once. But there was no path; just the road and the sidewalk. I later caught up to the dumbass cager and quoted the HTA (Highway traffic act in Ontario) to him and told him to expect a visit from the cops because of his dangerous driving. He the responded "your word against mine". The I pointed to the little black box in the middle of my handlebar... "Hey dip*****... smile for the camcorder." He got pissed and got out of the car, I simply turned the corner and lost him in the sidestreets and parks (GPS are useful for that!).

Got home, called the cops, filed a complaint, they came over, I handed them a copy ofthe MP4 file (Electronic video). They charged the driver based on the evidence on the video. About 8 months later I was subpoenaed to appear in court as a witness but I got a call the day before that the driver pleaded guilty to a lesser charge so I wasn't needed.

Moral of the story? DON'T GET MAD... GET EVEN!
NICE. I need to get my hands on some stealth video cams for this type of situation.

It happened again tonight. Further up on the same roadway, Singing Hills Blvd, when I was climbing the first hill, about 3.25 miles into my commute, past the section where the MUP crosses under the roadway to the other side. After the passenger yelled for me to get my ass on the sidewalk, I yelled thank you for the advice, he then gave me the single finger salute, to which I smiled & waved like I was saying goodbye from the deck of a ship as it is headed out to see leaving the dock.

I have low quality video footage of it this time. Would anyone like to see it?

Incidentally this is the second time, on the same roadway. Ironically it happened after my boss told me to have a good safe ride home. The last time it happened, which was the last time I commuted home, he said the same thing & I got yelled at by that chick, which prompted this thread. Coincidence or not? Should I kindly ask my boss not to wish me a safe ride home, to see if I get yelled anymore by cagers & JAM's? I know he means well & I don't blame him, he's a heck of a nice guy.
