tick...tick...

kkkrrrrgriiiinnnndddddccccrruunch!!!This was my commute today... I have a 19 mile each way commute to one of the Community Colleges where I teach. On my way home ...(about 1 mile outside of New Paltz is where I heard the sounds above in the title. I was just shifting to my big ring at just over 30 mph and something happened that never happened to me before. A link on my chain had separated and caught the inside of my FD on the shift. Of course I shredded right through that ('cause I roll like that) and nearly ripped the thing right from my seat tube. It was so shredded I walked the rest of the way to town (w/0) my shoes on - cause I where Time cleats - and tore the hell out of a nearly new pair of socks. Anyway, made it to town, rigged my chain and took off the FD the rest of the way using some tools from my Dojo, and now I can't wait to get to the LBS, get a new chain, and watch them laugh at me. Hope all of you had a GREAT DAY as well ( actually my ride was great before that happened - the morning commute was all tailwind).

Did you not have the tools on board to convert over to a fixie/ (7/8/9/10) speed?

By my reckoning that would require him to be carrying, at minimum, a lockring spanner, a spare BB lockring, a track cog, spacers, and a spoke wrench.

Oh my god... that is so funny...you were trying to be funny, right? Regardless of being an eight w/ 2 chainrings or being a fixie... the chain still would have split and I fixed it as anyone would....But, point well received. Thanks for playing!!!

btw...thanks for the defense, Sammyboy!!!

Bikes: Windsor Fens, Giant Seek 0 (2014, Alfine 8 + discs)

No way to bend things enough so the FD would just stay away from the chain so you could just run it in one gear up front?

Joe

I had a similar thing happen, and that's what the joker at the lbs asked me.

Bikes: Schwinn Empire XL

I had a chain start to come apart like that. I just stoped and got a rock and beat it back together. It got me home 10 miles. Then went to the LBS and got a new chain.

If it had taken out the FD. I would have removed the FD and put the chain on the big ring. Then beat the chain back together and road it home.
