My commute is 38-40 miles round trip, and it took me about three weeks to get used to it. I started from a base of 50 miles or less a week, and a lot of strength training, so I wasn't totally unfit. It was still a challenge for the first three weeks---not that it's not still a challenge, mind you. I was hit by a car and off the bike for a month, and I had to work myself back up to pre-hit fitness, so I got to start even less fit than I did before. Still took about three weeks.

Despite the fact that commutes don't ever change in distance, I worked up to mine by taking the Tram instead of the 59th St bridge for a while. While coming back from an injury, I gradually weaned myself off the tram and back onto the bridge.

Commutes can and do change in distance. I take one route IN to work and another home.
