Right now I run a pair of the Vistalite Eclipse 7 LED lights on the seatstays, but I'd like to upgrade to the new Cateye TL-LD1100 rear taillight. The problem is that I use a Carradice bag on my commuter, so seatpost mounting is not an option, because the bag blocks the view of the post from the rear. The light is too wide to mount on the seat stays, any other ideas?

Does your Carradice bag come with a mounting point for a clip-on rear light? Or could you fashion one and sew it on? Then you could use the belt/rucksack clip that comes with the Cateye TL-LD1100.

I do have a mounting point on the Carradice for that purpose, but I'm more comfortable mounting a light on the bike, rather than on a bag where the light might bounce up and down. Not to say that it won't work, but I haven't seen enough other cyclists with such a setup to see if it's sturdy and/or visible. Anyone have first hand experience?

Why is it too wide to mount on the seat stays? Both my wife and I have mounted one on the SS with the SS adapter mount from Cateye. You could always mount it sideways too, so it's up and down on the SS if tire clearance is a problem.

With the brackets I've seen from Cateye, mounting the light horizontally on the SS will put it into the spokes, and it's not possible to mount it vertically because the slope of the SS prevents me from pointing it straight back.

Which bracket are you using? Perhaps you're using a bracket not commonly available in the US?

I have a Catey LD1000 mounted to the loop on my Transit trunk. The first time I hit a bump, the light flew off. I then wrapped an elastic rubber band around the bottom part of the clip, which sticks out beneath the loop. I have never had a problem again. A simple, free solution to my problem.

My wife then went further and sewed the loop to the trunk in the middle of the loop , to give some more sturdiness to the loop (the loop is a little floppy), and to keep the light in place from a left/right perspective. I then stuffed the little bag that the loop is sewn onto with plastic bags. I now have a LD1000 that is securely mounted and points toward the rear (not up or down). All for no money and 10 minutes of effort.

As a matter of fact I ordered the mounts from the Cateye US site. Try making a shim with an old tube to angle the light how you wish if you are having problems.

The 1100 comes with a clip attachment for clipping the light to a bag or your belt. I've used mine to clip the light to my messenger bag.

But I have the same problem with my seat post and the saddle bag and am looking into attaching the light to the back of my rack.

duppie is right, I remember needing to use a rubber band to make that clip more secure. That clip that comes with the 1000/1100 is actually very handy. It works with other Cat Eye lights too. I use it with the slimmer 600 model too. Wish I had a few more of these clips.

I'm guessing the bag is being carried on a rear rack? Does the rack have a rear reflector? Maybe yo can replace it with one of these mounts:

Your LBS might stock them. When I was using the 600(before I got my Superflash) I picked up a couple of those mounts that use the reflector bracket(TL-LD120/500/600 bracket on the above page) so that I could switch the light between several bikes.

I have TL-LD1000 mounted to the loop on the back of a Carradice SQR bag. Rather than a rubber band, I wrapped some tape around the bottom of the clip to secure it, otherwise it would bounce off for sure. The tape also holds a shim behind the clip to raise the angle of the light to horizontal. This mount is very stable.

I drilled a small hole through the Cateye clip (down near the clip opening) and put a zip tie through there to "lock" my LD1000 onto the loop on my Banjo Brothers rack bag. It can't come off. (I worried about a rubber band breaking.)

Bouncing around while attached to a bag? Even better for getting attention, as long as it doesn't end up "off angle" too much.

Here is the part number of the rack mount. I have one on my bike, I also have a mount on the mudguard.
