Distance of your commute
#127
Usually about an hour and 10 mins or so in the morning - a bit longer in the evening. Up and over 2 pretty good basalt ridges each way, 2 miles or so of paved bike path, about 3 miles of dirt road/trail, and the rest paved. The leaves are looking better each day - I think peak color around here is only about a week and a half away.

1.2 miles! Such a short commute is perfect for a short bike ride rather than firing up a car engine. Bravo!
My commute is 8.5 miles each way.... about 45 mins or less to get to work.

I only bike commute 2 days out of the week. It's about 6.5 miles round trip, but I do it twice during one day of the week because there are 7 hours between my morning and evening classes. The other day of the week, I ride in the morning and drive in the evening because I have a 3 hour once per week class in addition to the other evening class and I'm not comfortable riding at night. I've done it before, but I'm not comfortable with it.
The other 3 days I have to rely on San Francisco Muni's wretched public transit system. I have a 40% chance of getting on the morning bus between home and school. The other 60% of the time, the bus doesn't stop so I might not get on the bus until the 3rd one shows up. The effect is that my commute can vary from 20 to 50 minutes to get to school despite that the ride only takes 15minutes (3 minutes faster than bike). After class I have to go to work on the other side of town and then take the bus back home after work. What's stopping me from biking these 3 days is that I can't take my bike on Muni between school and work. Otherwise, I'd do about 11 miles on these days between home and school and work and home. I don't want to ride to work from school because I don't want them smelling me before they see me at work.

My favored routes (one-way): 7.5 miles if by car, 10 miles using bike trails (on MTB and CX bikes), and 12 miles using only 2-lane roads and sidestreets (on road bike).
