Another Newbie Commuter :-)
Just got myself a new Trek 1000 series road bike.. I've taken it on a couple rides, and to school a couple times, but I guess my butt just isnt used to it.... cuz damn is it hurting! Is this normal?? My legs are fine, and I seem to be doing ok physically... The seat seems to be cushoned okay, will I just get used to it later??? Cant imagine what i'd feel like to go on really long rides.. Other than that, I'm liking it a lot! When I get into better shape, I'll be taking it to work about 15 miles away :-)

The answer is simply "yes you will get used to it". I went through that stage myself, and I'm sure many others did too.

I started cycling about a month ago; and yes, the posterior pain goes away. Took mine about three weeks, but that's probably because there have been only three days in the past month I haven't rode, and I ride between five and twenty-five miles on average every day.
Be warned: You'll start looking at non-cyclists as overweight, lethargic lumps; pretty soon, you'll have your parents and girlfriend cycling, and friends will refuse to see you unless you can talk about something *other* then the last cool ride...

I have been commuting all summer on a Giant Cypress and three
days ago I too bought a Trek 1000 what a bike!!! I realize it is only a entry level road bike but I've never rode a bike that climbs hills like this. As far as the saddle yes it is hard but give it some time. I only have about 72 miles on mine and I really don't notice any pain any more. Just make sure to wear good shorts.

Welcome to the Forums BustNuts and Flashthecat. Yeah, sore butt is part of the Bicycle Fraternity hazing rituals we all must suffer through. I just went riding over the holidays with a buddy and his brother who was in town. He borrowed one of my bikes and afterwards he had to sit on an ice-pack for the rest of the evening. Neither my buddy nor I had any problems and the bro asked us "why not?" Butt calouses was the only thing we could say!
