Fitness, faster than car, more enviro friendly

Every day unless sick or unusual requirement e.g. need to drop car for service etc

It's Sustainable, good for me, and I enjoy the ride.

I borrow my parents car once a month maybe. Mostly use it to drive to my brothers house over 65 miles away (no easy way to ride a bike there).

Yes

Specialized Langster (Single speed).
8) Approximately how much was it?
$600
9) Why do you use the type of bike you do?
It's fast, cheap, reliable, and fun.

More commuter focused bikes and accessories are being advertised, the market is more positive than it was a few years ago. More people are seeing a bike as a pragmatic & effective tool to get from place to place vs. a weekend toy.

Social & cultural stigma, we (USA) have been so motor vehicle focused for a couple of generations;
it is going to take a lot of time to overcome that intertia. Safer biking systems, roads etc. Better bike parking and support resources.

Social & cultural stigma, we (USA) have been so motor vehicle focused for a couple of generations;
it is going to take a lot of time to overcome that intertia. Safer biking systems, roads etc. Better bike parking and support resources.

My health, coupled with the fact that we have excellent weather (if not too hot) in Alabama most of the year, coupled with a short distance to work (10 miles round trip)

5 days a week, barring horrible weather (tornadoes, T-storms, etc)
3) Do you commute no matter what the weather?
Not yet. Eventually I hope to have a "bad weather commuting" bike but I don't feel confident commuting on 23mm tires with the crappy roads we have.

In bad weather, and possibly this coming winter... this is my first summer of full commuting.
I do drive on the weekend to church and to family events, I have a wife and 2 kids.

I have one pannier with a change of clothes, I shower at a gym a few blocks from work. I also carry lunch (leftovers from the night before) and sometimes a notebook or portfolio, along with the bike accessories listed in #13.

I wear jersey and shorts on the weekend for longer rides.

I posted about three weeks ago in regards to finding Boston-specific commuters to interview for my senior thesis design project. While this did help me a lot (thanks to all who responded), I have some more general questions that are not area-specific, and more about equipment. Now I have developed this series of questions to be asked in an oral interview, so it is quite lengthy (takes a lot less time to do orally). Since it is quite lengthy I understand most won't want to take the time to fill it all out, so I would love for people to fill out whatever they want, as any information will help me (or if you are REALLY bored at work you could do them all!). I started commuting by bike a year ago when my wife and I had 2 cars breakdown within 4 months of eachother. I didn't want to buy 2 new cars and didn't want a used car so she got a new car and I chose a bike. Since then I've come to enjoy all the benefits such as saving money, the environment, and health.

THe only time I won't commute is in the rain for now. Averaging 4 days a week.

I have a steel bike so, for now, I'm a fair weathered bike commuter but that will change.

yes. But not to work.

While this did help me a lot (thanks to all who responded), I have some more general questions that are not area-specific, and more about equipment. I think the mixte is cute and the Bianchi is a really easy, fun ride

It is a wonderful way to start and end my workday. I feel more alert throughout the day if I bike in.

Three times a week.

I will take my scooter to work the other two days out of the week. The car is reserved for carrying lots of people/stuff or going to visit family out of town.

I also ride my mountain bike on the local trails, and the road bike on the regional roads.

Cycling allows me to get places faster, and easier then walking, but it is still ultra healthy, and fit. At the same time it has little to no effect on the environment in comparison to cars.

The independence one gains from the chains of the automotive industry. Not depending on a car means no gas, no insurance, no registration. You are free of these agencies and corporations that chip away at your financial Lively-hood.

Haven't had to commute in anything nasty yet, will try commuting in the winter this year. Last year, weather was a deciding factor in my choice of transportation.

At first, fun. Now, fun and the sense of cheer and well-being I get from it, and I also think it's contributed to my MS not getting worse. (And it takes approximately the same time as the subway, so there's no significant time loss.)

As parental/spousal/mechanical logistics allow. During a period when things go smoothly, I commute every day. If I replace one bike with another and have to get it all to work with the child trailer again, as just happened, there can be a month during which I can only manage it once a week.

I did before I started towing my kids to preschool. Now weather is a consideration.

As parental/spousal/mechanical logistics allow. During a period when things go smoothly, I commute every day. If I replace one bike with another and have to get it all to work with the child trailer again, as just happened, there can be a month during which I can only manage it once a week.

I did before I started towing my kids to preschool. Now weather is a consideration.

No. My two forms of transportation are bicycle and subway.

$650 for the stock bike, that much again for modifications.

I think it's capable of hauling my twins in a child trailer without breaking, and it folds, so I'm allowed in the building with it at work.

Trek 1000 road bike.

On and off since I was a kid.

- Spray bottle of wrinkle releaser

- Sram Dual Drive (makes it possible to get up this one nasty hill with the child trailer)
- Brooks B17 saddle
- Burley d'Lite twin trailer with nutted axle hitch
- Vega Light & Motion headlight
- Serfas taillight
- Helmet and sunglasses, but they're not commuting-specific. I use them on my road bike, too.

Hard-shell clothes carrier that fits in the backpack
15) How often do you perform maintenance on your bike?
Some sort of maintenance every week or so, if you include chasing down squeaks
16) Do you carry any supplies with you for repairs?
- A basic tool containing three hex drivers, a Philips, and a flathead.
- One tube
- Tire levers
- Hand wipes
- Hand pump
17) What do you carry with you on your commute?
How do you carry it?
- Two three-year-old children, sippy cups, and Cheerios in a Burley d'Lite
- Laptop, change of clothes, tools, lock, cell phone, keys, etc. in an Arkel Bug on a Crossrack
- Will be adding a saddlebag (probably a Carradice) and offloading the non-office-oriented stuff out of the Bug and into it.
18) Do you ride to work in your work clothes, or cycling clothes?
Cycling clothes.
19) Do you keep hygienic supplies at at work?
Yes.
20) Do you keep extra clothes and shoes at work?
Yes. However, this isn't for daily use. They're in case of unforeseen clothes-related crises.

Never.

No.
