Ryan asked:

All things considered, it is the best way to commute.

2) How often do you commute by bike?
Everyday

3) Do you commute no matter what the weather?
Yes. The rain is a downer and sometimes I'll walk if it is too windy but in general, I ride.

4) How far is your commute?
About 10 miles daily.

5) Do you drive a car? If so, how often?
Don't drive. Don't own a car.

6)Does your cycling supplement normal driving chores/trips?
No. See #5.

I have eight bikes, six of them I can commute on.

Mountain bike occasionally, a rare road ride.

11) What kind of bike do you ride for your other riding?
Mountain bike with big fat knobby tires, no rack.

12) How long have you been riding a bike?
Since I was six or so (30 years). Very seriously for the last six years.

13) What accessories do you use for commuting specifically?
Racks, panniers, rear and front light, good U-Lock, velcro ankle band to keep my pants out of the drivetrain,

14) Are there any accessories you would like? (That exist or don't exist)
?

15) How often do you perform maintenance on your bike?

I thought so.

24) Was the lock cut/broken?
I think the university thought it was abandoned and cut it off.

25) How do you feel about the general state of the commuter market today, are you satisfied with the products offered for commuters?
It is getting better. Sometimes bike stuff is more expensive than it should be but I'm not complaining.

26) What factors do you feel keep potential commuters from commuting?
It involves moving your body. People erroneously think it is dangerous. Cities are built in such a way that distances are too great to travel by bike. Bikes are marketed as toys for children and adults. People bike on crappy bikes (and that can be a drag).

Ryan asked:

1) What motivates you to commute by bike?
Because I like to.

2) How often do you commute by bike?
Depends greatly upon the weather and road conditions; 1-2 days per week.

3) Do you commute no matter what the weather?
Yes & No; living in a very rural area the weather and road conditions impact the commute decision.
For example this morning the road was a mess of ice filled ruts, mud, slush and hard pack;
not condusive to a commute, temp was -18C. I slipped (studded tires & all) and fell in an ice rut yesterday

4) How far is your commute?
About 17 km one way to work.

5) Do you drive a car? If so, how often?
A fact of life in a rural area, one needs to drive.
About 8000 km last year.

6)Does your cycling supplement normal driving chores/trips?
yes, i often drive to the beginning of the paved road and then ride about town doing various "chores".

7) What kind of bike do you commute with?
Two at present. A StreetMachine recumbent for summer and nice weather. A Surly CrossCheck for winter and bad roads.

8) Approximately how much was it?
The SM about $2500, CxCK about $1000.

9) Why do you use the type of bike you do?
The bikes I have are comfortable & pleasant to ride.

10) Do you ride a bike other then (sic) for commuting?
No.

11) What kind of bike do you ride for your other riding?
N/A

12) How long have you been riding a bike?
Since 1960.

13) What accessories do you use for commuting specifically?
Front & Rear Lights.

14) Are there any accessories you would like? (That exist or don't exist)
Better parking.

15) How often do you perform maintenance on your bike?
About once a month, depending upon the weather.

23) Was the bike locked properly?
N/A

24) Was the lock cut/broken?
N/A

25) How do you feel about the general state of the commuter market today, are you satisfied with the products offered for commuters?
More commuter focused bikes and accessories are being advertised, the market is more positive than it was a few years ago. More people are seeing a bike as a pragmatic & effective tool to get from place to place vs. a weekend toy.

26) What factors do you feel keep potential commuters from commuting?
Social & cultural stigma, we (USA) have been so motor vehicle focused for a couple of generations;
it is going to take a lot of time to overcome that intertia. Safer biking systems, roads etc. Better bike parking and support resources.

1) What motivates you to commute by bike?

My health, coupled with the fact that we have excellent weather (if not too hot) in Alabama most of the year, coupled with a short distance to work (10 miles round trip)

2) How often do you commute by bike?

5 days a week, barring horrible weather (tornadoes, T-storms, etc)

3) Do you commute no matter what the weather?

Not yet. Eventually I hope to have a "bad weather commuting" bike but I don't feel confident commuting on 23mm tires with the crappy roads we have.

4) How far is your commute?

10 miles round trip

5) Do you drive a car?
If so, how often?

In bad weather, and possibly this coming winter... this is my first summer of full commuting.
I do drive on the weekend to church and to family events, I have a wife and 2 kids.

6)Does your cycling supplement normal driving chores/trips?

If it's just me, yes.

7) What kind of bike do you commute with?

Single speed road bike.

8) Approximately how much was it?

$100 on Craigslist. Have since put $150 into accessories, upgrades and tools.

9) Why do you use the type of bike you do?

It's light, basic and does what I need to do (commute and exercise on the weekends, and tool around with kiddos).

10) Do you ride a bike other then for commuting?

Yes, I exercise on the weekends and ride with the wife and kids in the evenings

11) What kind of bike do you ride for your other riding?

Same bike.

12) How long have you been riding a bike?

Since I was 5 or 6

13) What accessories do you use for commuting specifically?

My bike has a rack, a rope lock (if I'd do it again I'd use a U lock), a rear blinking light, a small saddle bag with a CO2 inflator, tire lever and spare tube. That's it.

Going to work I use one pannier with a change of clothes and lunch.

14) Are there any accessories you would like? (That exist or don't exist)

I'm pretty happy with what I have. If I upgraded anything I'd get a nicer rack and pannier system.

15) How often do you perform maintenance on your bike?

I clean/lube the drivetrain every other week, inflate tires every couple of days.

16) Do you carry any supplies with you for repairs?

Just a CO2 inflator and a spare tire and one tire lever.

17) What do you carry with you on your commute?
How do you carry it?

See #13

I have one pannier with a change of clothes, I shower at a gym a few blocks from work. I also carry lunch (leftovers from the night before) and sometimes a notebook or portfolio, along with the bike accessories listed in #13.

18) Do you ride to work in your work clothes, or cycling clothes?

I generally wear a cheap red athletic tee from Walmart along with synthetic shorts.

I wear jersey and shorts on the weekend for longer rides.

19) Do you keep hygienic supplies at at work?

I shower at the gym a few blocks from work.

20) Do you keep extra clothes and shoes at work?

I carry them with me

21) How long is your bike unattended during a given work day?

8-9 hours. I work on a military arsenal and I don't worry really about stuff being stolen. Most people symbolically lock around one tire and aren't too concerned about securely locking bikes up. A few people never lock their bikes.

22) Have you ever had a bike stolen?

In college

23) Was the bike locked properly?

Yes

24) Was the lock cut/broken?

Most likely ... they took the lock too.

25) How do you feel about the general state of the commuter market today, are you satisfied with the products offered for commuters?

Yes. If I had a pile of money to blow on commuter accessories I'd buy a nice rack and panniers. I have a cheap rack and panniers and sometimes they cause trouble but I know there are nicer out there. LBS's seem pretty expensive to me, but online shops are OK.

26) What factors do you feel keep potential commuters from commuting?

Cars I have a friend who works with me who lives in the same subdivision who refuses to commute because there is no shoulder on the road and we live in rural AL and the drivers can be somewhat nuts at times. I don't blame him. There's factors you sometimes can't mitigate...

1) What motivates you to commute by bike?
It is a wonderful way to start and end my workday. I feel more alert throughout the day if I bike in.

2) How often do you commute by bike?
Three times a week.

3) Do you commute no matter what the weather?
Yes.

4) How far is your commute?
7.5 miles.

5) Do you drive a car?
If so, how often?

I will take my scooter to work the other two days out of the week. The car is reserved for carrying lots of people/stuff or going to visit family out of town.

6)Does your cycling supplement normal driving chores/trips?
Yes.

7) What kind of bike do you commute with?
Most of the commuting is on a FS mountain bike, though I will occasionally take my road bike if the mood strikes me or I have a flat.

8) Approximately how much was it?
Mountain bike ~ $700
Road bike ~ $2000 (gift)

9) Why do you use the type of bike you do?
I like the mountain bike more because it is the more flexible and comfortable of the two machines. On the road bike I have to keep to the roads because I'm afraid it is too fragile. The mountain bike allows me many more route options (through the ditch, behind this subdivision) as well as being a more comfortable fit.

10) Do you ride a bike other then for commuting?
I also ride my mountain bike on the local trails, and the road bike on the regional roads.

11) What kind of bike do you ride for your other riding?
See above.

12) How long have you been riding a bike?
Since I was a small child.

13) What accessories do you use for commuting specifically?
I have a headlamp and taillamp for the commute. Occasionally I'll pull out a rack and panniers, but generally I'll make do with a messenger bag.

14) Are there any accessories you would like? (That exist or don't exist)
Nothing comes to mind.

15) How often do you perform maintenance on your bike?
When I notice that the chain is getting real noisy I'll lube it, and obviously if something breaks.

16) Do you carry any supplies with you for repairs?
Just an extra tube, a frame pump, and a bike specific multi-tool.

17) What do you carry with you on your commute?
How do you carry it?

I carry a change of clothes (pants, shirt, belt, boxers, socks) and a lunch, plus the usual wallet, keys, and phone. It all goes into my messenger bag along with the bike tools.

18) Do you ride to work in your work clothes, or cycling clothes?
I wear bike shorts for the comfort/cooling factor (it's hot in San Antonio) and a hi-tech tee-shirt of some sort.

19) Do you keep hygienic supplies at at work?
I have soap, shampoo, and deodorant at work.

20) Do you keep extra clothes and shoes at work?
Just an extra set of shoes.

21) How long is your bike unattended during a given work day?
It comes into the office with me.

22) Have you ever had a bike stolen?
Yes, though not from my office.

23) Was the bike locked properly?
Yes.

24) Was the lock cut/broken?
Apparently it was, I never found it though.

25) How do you feel about the general state of the commuter market today, are you satisfied with the products offered for commuters?
I'm quite happy as a commuter. The best thing for me was changing jobs to a place with showers in the building.

26) What factors do you feel keep potential commuters from commuting?
Laziness, apprehension, not wanting to look like a freak(lycra included).

1) What motivates you to commute by bike?
Cycling allows me to get places faster, and easier then walking, but it is still ultra healthy, and fit. At the same time it has little to no effect on the environment in comparison to cars.
Feeling good. I enjoy riding and I feel good after I've been riding.
The independence one gains from the chains of the automotive industry. Not depending on a car means no gas, no insurance, no registration. You are free of these agencies and corporations that chip away at your financial Lively-hood.
2) How often do you commute by bike?
I commute every day it's feasible.
3) Do you commute no matter what the weather?
Haven't had to commute in anything nasty yet, will try commuting in the winter this year. Last year, weather was a deciding factor in my choice of transportation.
4) How far is your commute?
Strictly speaking, 16 miles round trip. However long detours on the way home are prone to happen.
5) Do you drive a car?
Yes.
If so, how often?
3 to 4 times a month or less
6)Does your cycling supplement normal driving chores/trips?
Not sure I understand the question.
7) What kind of bike do you commute with?
I commute currently on a Rocky Mountain RC30
8) Approximately how much was it?
I paid $520, it was two years old, new in shop, original cost was $799
9) Why do you use the type of bike you do?
It is light, and has large, skinny tires. This means I can traverse hilly terrain with much more ease then a less aggressively designed bike. It also means I can go fast, which is always fun. zoom. zoom.
10) Do you ride a bike other then for commuting?
I ride my bike to do errands, and for pleasure rides. Often times with a local group of cyclists.
11) What kind of bike do you ride for your other riding?
I ride the same bike for recreation as I do for commute. A Rocky Mountain RC30
12) How long have you been riding a bike?
Since I was a child, but have only recently done any consistent riding (past 2 years)
13) What accessories do you use for commuting specifically?
-Topeak Road Morph Hand Pump
-Timbuk2 underseat bag
-Water bottle holder & bottle
-Spare Tube
-Park brand Multi tool for bikes
-2 additional Tire levers made by Park
-Park brand Super non-glue patch kit.
-Bell Brand Helmet w/ Visor
-Helmet mirror
-Bar ends.
-Messenger Bag
-Greaser
-Degreaser
-U-Lock
14) Are there any accessories you would like? (That exist or don't exist)
I am converting to Bull horn handlebars with bar end shifters, and paul component brake levers, but as far as strict accessories, lights, both front and rear. Nicer messenger bag.
15) How often do you perform maintenance on your bike?
I clean (degrease) and lubricate the chain/precision parts every 3 commutes. All other maintenance I have my local shop take care of.
16) Do you carry any supplies with you for repairs?
The Multi tool, spare tube, patch kit, and hand pump are the only tools I take on the ride. The multi tool allows me to fix most road side problems. Greaser/Degreaser is left at home.
17) What do you carry with you on your commute?
-Topeak Road Morph Hand Pump
-Timbuk2 underseat bag
-Water bottle holder & bottle
-Spare Tube
-Park brand Multi tool for bikes
-2 additional Tire levers made by Park
-Park brand Super non-glue patch kit.
-Bell Brand Helmet w/ Visor
-Helmet mirror
-Bar ends.
-Messenger Bag
How do you carry it?
Aforementioned underseat bag, and a few of the accessories attach right to the frame.
18) Do you ride to work in your work clothes, or cycling clothes?
I ride in "cycling" clothes and carry a change of clothes in my messenger bag.
19) Do you keep hygienic supplies at at work?
I have meant to bring in some deodorant and perhaps a home made cleaner concoction to deal with sweat, but it hasn't been a big enough issue to actually do it.
20) Do you keep extra clothes and shoes at work?
Not as of yet, but something I am considering.
21) How long is your bike unattended during a given work day?
The bike stays inside our locked building, no direct supervision, but I see it throughout the day.
22) Have you ever had a bike stolen?
Not me personally.
23) Was the bike locked properly?
Never had stolen bike
24) Was the lock cut/broken?
See question 23
25) How do you feel about the general state of the commuter market today, are you satisfied with the products offered for commuters?
All the tools to commute are available. I am very satisfied with what is available.
26) What factors do you feel keep potential commuters from commuting?
Generally mentality between "vehicle" and Recreational Tool, meaning people don't think of a Bicycle as a legitimate vehicle.
General fitness. This country has plenty of people who are not in shape, even if they are not obese, a lifestyle of laziness and convenience has made us soft.

1) What motivates you to commute by bike?

At first, fun. Now, fun and the sense of cheer and well-being I get from it, and I also think it's contributed to my MS not getting worse. (And it takes approximately the same time as the subway, so there's no significant time loss.)

2) How often do you commute by bike?

As parental/spousal/mechanical logistics allow. During a period when things go smoothly, I commute every day. If I replace one bike with another and have to get it all to work with the child trailer again, as just happened, there can be a month during which I can only manage it once a week.

3) Do you commute no matter what the weather?

I did before I started towing my kids to preschool. Now weather is a consideration.

4) How far is your commute?

28 miles, round trip.

5) Do you drive a car?
If so, how often?

No.

6)Does your cycling supplement normal driving chores/trips?

No. My two forms of transportation are bicycle and subway.

7) What kind of bike do you commute with?

Xootr Swift.

8) Approximately how much was it?

$650 for the stock bike, that much again for modifications.

9) Why do you use the type of bike you do?

I think it's capable of hauling my twins in a child trailer without breaking, and it folds, so I'm allowed in the building with it at work.

10) Do you ride a bike other then for commuting?

Yes.

11) What kind of bike do you ride for your other riding?

Trek 1000 road bike.

12) How long have you been riding a bike?

On and off since I was a kid.

13) What accessories do you use for commuting specifically?

- Arkel Bug backpack/pannier with laptop sleeve
- Eagle Creek folder (for clothes)
- Spray bottle of wrinkle releaser
- Xootr Crossrack
- Sram Dual Drive (makes it possible to get up this one nasty hill with the child trailer)
- Brooks B17 saddle
- Burley d'Lite twin trailer with nutted axle hitch
- Vega Light & Motion headlight
- Serfas taillight
- Helmet and sunglasses, but they're not commuting-specific. I use them on my road bike, too.

14) Are there any accessories you would like? (That exist or don't exist)

Hard-shell clothes carrier that fits in the backpack

15) How often do you perform maintenance on your bike?

Some sort of maintenance every week or so, if you include chasing down squeaks

16) Do you carry any supplies with you for repairs?

- A basic tool containing three hex drivers, a Philips, and a flathead.
- One tube
- Tire levers
- Hand wipes
- Hand pump

17) What do you carry with you on your commute?
How do you carry it?

- Two three-year-old children, sippy cups, and Cheerios in a Burley d'Lite
- Laptop, change of clothes, tools, lock, cell phone, keys, etc. in an Arkel Bug on a Crossrack
- Will be adding a saddlebag (probably a Carradice) and offloading the non-office-oriented stuff out of the Bug and into it.

18) Do you ride to work in your work clothes, or cycling clothes?

Cycling clothes.

19) Do you keep hygienic supplies at at work?

Yes.

20) Do you keep extra clothes and shoes at work?

Yes. However, this isn't for daily use. They're in case of unforeseen clothes-related crises.

21) How long is your bike unattended during a given work day?

Never.

22) Have you ever had a bike stolen?

No.

23) Was the bike locked properly?

-

24) Was the lock cut/broken?

-

25) How do you feel about the general state of the commuter market today, are you satisfied with the products offered for commuters?

I'm starting to be. For a long time, I was doing it before the right gear existed. The gear is finally catching up.

26) What factors do you feel keep potential commuters from commuting?

They think it's insane.
