Thank you very much as I have a couple of very heavy duty cable locks, but if these were the the same as the one they cut on your bike I will toss them.

Thank you,

Wll
Take the hint, cables are a secondary form of protection regardless of thickness. The original poster hasn't been here for 3 days and this was the last thread he posted in. Why don't you tell us what kind of cables you have that way we can tell you if you should use them as a secondary locking system or toss them?

I've been using a cable lock with no problems. However, after reading this thread and now that I'll be parking the bike in various locations during the warmer months, I bought a Kryptonite Mini to help make me feel more secure.

I have severe doubts about the alleged benefits of locking a bike in a public space, in the hope that some by-stander will care enough to stop a bike thief. I suspect it's more likely that they'll choose not to get involved. I prefer to hide mine as out of sight as possible. I only lock mine in public if I'm only going to be away from it for a few minutes, and even then I worry.

On the flip side, a nice quiet out of the way area gives a thief more time to work.

If they can find it, but yeah, that is a risk. I consider it a lesser risk than in public though. YMMV.

Fortunately, my workplace has a nice bike cage in a private car park with card access for employees only. I don't even lock my bike to the rack during work.

My girlfriend has a similar setup at her work, but it's wise to keep them locked regardless

While the police are not going to throw up road blocks in search of your bike, odds are it was stolen either on a lark or to be pawned. Furnishing the police with the serial number, as well as filing a report, will ensure that if the bike is abandoned and recovered, they will know who it belongs to. And they may either furnish pawn shops with that information or you should take it upon yourself to get that info out.
